Sea of Love, by Cat Power.
nobody reads descriptions so this should be safely unread. i reached a milestone tonight, a million views on this video.
i write a confession, what happened. i started to take photographs to take my mind of a horrendous relationship breakup. i didn't want it to end but it did. it was the first time i felt so alone in this world. and then being without her mattered so much that it felt like i was dying.
This song was my anthem around the time. Cat Power it seemed, had suffered a similar fall from grace. it was and still is, a sad song.
this milestone then, a million views, makes me want to write something about why i uploaded this video in the first place, but the fact is that 95-99 % of viewers click on this video to hear Cat power sing Sea of love, and not view my pictures. of course that's why they click on it, they haven't heard of me, but they have watched Juno, and they have seen Cat Power on stage somewhere, or heard her voice on some friends' CD player. don't get me wrong, i am not insecure, i am totally confidant about my ability to take a photograph as a means to express myself. the music i use in my video merely aides the emotional connection, music has always done this.
i am nearing the end of my twenties. in a couple of months i will be thirty years of age. i don't have any children, and i don't have a partner. i make a living as a photojournalist and freelance photographer.
for as long as i can remember, i could never fit somewhere. there's nowhere i could call home. i barely recognise myself from the young man who entered university thinking that a formal education in psychology was going to make me happy, that this prescribed route was going to make me stop wondering, and actually live my life, instead of scratching at it, watching it.
the solace of a camera then seems in retrospect like an obvious thing to do, but as luck would have it, i finally found something that i was truly a natural at, expressing myself. you see i have a lot of pain. of course everyone and their dog has pain and i am no different, but what i find myself trying to do with the camera is just ignore everything that i have ever learned or experienced, just blissfully forget about the taxman, the banker, the things that make up the world around me, and just think about me.
when i take a photograph i am there, being hit by a wave, happy in a graveyard, in a box, or even a garden plastic rabbit, these are all expressions of myself. yes they exist and i didn't arrange them, but i am drawn to them as soon as i sense them, and for however long the scene is as such, i want to take a photograph of it, and when i do, i feel momentarily invigorated, an orgasmic sense of something recognised and understood and captured, a reflection of myself.
so from someone with no artistic background, via a Machiavellian relationship breakup, i find myself with the perfect medium to express myself with, the camera.
thanks for reading.

Raymond, I don't know if you read your comments. I haven't seen Juno, but I do read descriptions. I want to thank you for uploading this song and your beautiful photographs. This song isn't a sad one for me, but a celebration. I'm 50 years old and have never married nor had children. I've rarely dated because I don't like to use people, I'm picky, and it's harder to meet people the older you get. When I love, I love with my whole self and it takes a long time for me to recover. I'd pretty much resigned myself to a life without love. But I have found him now, and we love each other. A few minutes ago I had described my love for him as an ocean, etc., and looked for this song as sung by a woman to share with him, and he loved it as well. I'm so happy. And I'm so blessed that you shared this. Thank you.

i have struggled with depression for all of my life when ever i listen to this song i always cry. not because i'm sad but because it makes me feel happy to know that people love me for me and that i am what god wanted me to be. for anyone who feels that they shouldnt live anymore, know this. ive experienced your pain. people laugh at you for being different. you should laugh at them for all being the same.

I knew of this song but never really listened to it. Again, it caught my attention as the music to the trailer of My Policeman. Strange that it doesn’t feature on the soundtrack. Anyway, had to check that it was Cat Power as the voice wasn’t as smokey or husky as I associate with her. Lovely tune.

Was introduced to Robert Plant's version by a beautiful flower and saw the song shape itself into our early honeymoon anthem, then everything fractured and as I fell from love's grace, Cat Power's version caught me and soothed my wounded heart. She gave these lyrics purpose again for me - I remember when we first met, just wish the flower would too. It's beautiful, the ups and downs, all of it. Thank you for loving.

@VIIxKnives
@VIIxKnives 9 жыл бұрын
brunettesweetie21 To me it makes me think of a scene of fond memories. Spontaneously thinking of everything you've both been through and just allowing yourself to sink into the sea of love with them. The sadness comes from the sound though, as it's easy to imagine a scene where someone is singing this song, with it's gloomy tone that seems to bring a lump to the throat, to their lover who's on their death bed. Something about the way the song sounds has a feeling like the singer is struggling to get it out... like it's all they can do to sing this song before falling apart. It's the instrumentals in the background that bring all the strain imo. Even without lyrical implication, it just has a feeling of finality to it all somehow. It's not really that way, but the sound feeds this feeling of nostalgia for something that's gone or leaving. At your wedding? Well it could work really well imo, while it could signify your professed love and your vows, it can also hit home with your relatives who may already be married and trigger nostalgia and appreciation for what they still have. I don't really think it's weird at all given how many feelings this song can evoke.

I read the description and I hope you find love in yourself, in someone special, and maybe a baby if that's what you want. I'm 31 and having a baby. Didn't meet the man who would become my husband till I was 27, so late 20's or early 30's isn't too old to fall in love and start a family. It may be the best time

We spend our whole life trying to prepare our lives as if if we figured it out that would cushion the blow. It helps but life never changes. Its beautiful and magical yet ugly and devastating. why is this song hypnotic? The accompanying pictures are the "sea of love." Nothing really about romance, unrequited love (it could be) if not the on e, that love you don't think of, that you find unexpectedly in an abandoned store or corner, a bus stop a person who smiles at you for no reason. Especially the one smiling back from the mirror

I read the description and found a journal entry, one I have found myself writing in my own journal before. I know I used to think I needed to find someone who could pull me out of the slump I was in, but I found that no one can do that, only I could. It’s a decision no one can make for you, you have more power over your mind and emotions that anyone or any external factor. Only when I pulled myself out of the hell I was in, did I find someone I could enjoy the rest of my life with. Not someone who could rescue me from my old life, but someone I could love for the rest of our life together. Hang in there, don’t give up on life, and make your life and mind a better place 💜

I wanted to see if this was still here. I found this video years ago, as you would alone at night in your apartment and read the description. I sought out the song for how I felt at the time in of my life and didn't know where it would go. I read the description and was blown away. I felt a kin to the feeling of the author and reflected how would things be , how could things be with the person who I was feeling a similar but separate feeling over. The author's words and photos felt very genuine, and rare to stumble a peak into. Rare to perfectly communicate this to others. Right now I wanted to see if this was still here. I'm lying in bed next to the same person that made me feel that way years ago. We're still not married and he's said something that makes scared or hurt about the future. It's not his intent nor fault but I feel the way I feel to hear the news that I will possible see him even less. And I thought of this video and story. I feel certain this author is with someone now. I wonder how things have changed and that is to say so much has and that is to say: life has just been what it has been so much more that it was before. It's not 2013. It's not even 2017. Whatever limbo you feel in your life, changes too. I don't know why I wanted to share this. Maybe bc I wanted to connect the time and everything in between. I dint listen to it again, but I want to make sure this magic still existed and so did their story and treasure. Maybe holding onto these things is what allows us to feel love and life later. An awareness. An appreciation. Who knows where to make your next step. Who knows where it goes. T

You’re not alone. There’s more of us out there than you know with nowhere to call home. For me, it’s creating music and words. Keep creating and those souls will find you. Art tends to bring the lost together in a way unlike any other. ❤️

When I first heard this song I was going through a lot. My family was becoming homeless and falling apart. But I had my dog and my cat. My cat was only a year old and my dog was only 3. I used to sing this to them every night.. Now I only get to visit them when I can make the time and make it to them. They are separate as well. My dog is getting to be old.. I can see it, it hurts to admit but I haven't been making anywhere near the effort I should've been to see her.. she's depressed.. Now hearing this song as cradle my frail old Lily.. it breaks my heart.. I'm sobbing. But I sang it to her again while I could.. I don't think she understands how much she means to me.. My dog has been through hell and back with me.. I hope I can make up to her all the time I missed..

The first line of your description caught my eye. That was one of the most sobering things I have read in a long while. "I barely recognise myself from the young man who entered university thinking that a formal education in psychology was going to make me happy, that this prescribed route was going to make me stop wondering, and actually live my life, instead of scratching at it, watching it". Reading that felt like seeing myself in the mirror for the first time in a while. I am 19 and starting university now myself with a degree in political science, silently hoping that something will just come my way that snaps me awake and gives me a sense of purpose in any of it. It's crazy to think that I was only four years old when you wrote that, I hope you are doing well man, the photos add so much to this song. I hope that 15 years later you can look back at that and feel that you have grown, we'll see if I can say the same in 2039 :)

Dear Raymond, I call myself Nate and you can call me Nate if you like. I really do enjoy your photos. Before coming to this video I never knew who/what cat power was! I had heard a bit of the song before and liked it. Your photos are very lovely and I even want to become a photographer when I can afford a nice camera and go to school for it. Love the video overall. - Nate

@@isaaccain853 I didn't end up going. Unfortunately, my life never went in that direction. My mental health caused me to mostly fail high school, except for my senior year. I gave up on going to college and, essentially, made no life plans. I work full-time in a field I greatly enjoy, even if my current work location isn't the best. I hope to go to college, though. I want to go so bad, and go into my desired field, which is zoology. Maybe one day, but I can't imagine it'll be terribly soon. I still love photography, and do it as a hobby. I don't have any fancy equipment, just my dad's old camera and my phone.

I don't ever post comments on here, but when my dog was a puppy I always used to sing this to her and sway her in my arms. It was very soothing to her so I continued to sing and sway her in my arms until she was an adult dog. She unexpectedly got sick, and by that I mean very sudden she had acute renal failure, and I had to let her go 2 days later. On her last day before I had to say goodbye to her I played this one last time and for a second she mustered up enough strength to kiss my face. It's been a year now, and whenever I listen to this song I ball my eyes out. This will forever be your song Jasmine.

Read your description as the song and your photographs were obscured from view. I then typed this comment, missing the photos a second time. The photos have been missed again as the song finished. I'm going to restart the video a 3rd time to looks upon your works. Know that your words are not unread nor your photos unseen. A human being you've never met, likely to never meet, from across the world, or perhaps down your street, has just stumbled upon your work. It is a thing of beauty, as is your spirit. as is your inspiration. -a fellow human being on the rock

My cat died 2 years ago, he was my buddy and I had him since I was a little child. I was sad for almost a month... But I forgot about him, I find myself laughing at everyday situations, meeting new people, doing stupid shit with my friends, focusing into my study, I even replaced him already with two dogs... I forgot about him, and so you will. Still, he's the best friend I ever had.
