The German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) is on duty all year round in all weather conditions. The sea rescuers set off for the North and Baltic Seas from 54 stations. Many owe them help and sometimes even life. The missions can also be dangerous for the helpers themselves - hurricane gusts and huge waves are sometimes daily business for the crews. The report accompanies the crew of a rescue cruiser at the mouth of the Elbe.

I was a sea for 25 years, it was nice knowing I could sink you whenever I was mad. I primarily served as the Baltic sea before being promoted to the Atlantic, where I killed thousands of sailors. Eventually I got old so was put into semi-retirement as the red sea, which was calm and warm.

When I was young my father had a boat and we used to watch the guys from the Rescue cruiser Berlin run out. You could always hear that dull roaring of these engines when they were about to leave and when they left the port they floored the gas on all 3 engines, man I will never forget this sound the machines made it was just beautiful! You could still hear them minutes after they left. Once there was a yacht burning near our boat in the port and these guys saw the smoke, launched their small boat, then they drove to that burning yacht, cut the lines, pulled it out of the port where the Berlin was already waiting and they extinguished the fire. All that in 15min, without them some of the yachts next to that burning one would most likely also catched fire. I think there also a video on KZbin shot from a camera team that was on the Berlin coincidencenaly that day

The place where sailors learn about fighting and fires and leaks on board ships belongs to the German Navy. An ex-frigate , F 220 with the name "Köln" in active duty from 1957 till 1982, lies in the shallow harbour basin of Neustadt at the Bay of Lübeck where it cannot sink. The ship can catch fire here and there and parts of the hull are altered in such a way that "leaks" occur by drawing shutters.

Can never understand how little human life means to people who work in the them, why are they not the highest paid people on the planet!!!!!!!!!
@mattwatson
@mattwatson 29 күн бұрын
It's a simple explanation why. Supply and demand. The supply of workers willing and able to do that job is larger than the demand, so the workers have no leverage to demand higher wages. Employers will always have a large pool to hire from and people prepared to work for less money. This is also why professions like doctors get paid high wages, there are only a small amount of people with the intelligence and qualifications to be doctors, thus they can demand high wages.

To my knowledge the engine cooling water circulates through the double skin. That means the engine does not rely on outboard cooling water intakes that may get clogged because of two dangerous conditions: mud that is stirred up in stormy weather from the seabed in those shallow waters near the German coast and crushed ice in winter. Those boats go through.
@christiankastorf1427
@christiankastorf1427 3 жыл бұрын
@@charonstyxferryman I know what keel coolers or keel condensers ( for steam engines/turbines) are. But they are tubes that run along the outer skin of a boat. Those tubes could get damaged in case of grounding. That risk is avoided by letting the water circulate in the double hull.
@donnakawana
@donnakawana 2 жыл бұрын
All these comments are amazing... I've heard talk of keel cooled vessels but didn't work on any... I mainly worked on Tug boats an a 92 ft. Schooner an various sail boats.. yacht's... Cooking an crew... Just lost my home my sailboat to fire at the dock. 8t happened at night we were saved it our vessel tho... We are good...
@christiankastorf1427
@christiankastorf1427 2 жыл бұрын
@@charonstyxferryman I know that keel coolers are pipes or tubes that run along the outside of the outer skin of a boat so the seawater has contact with them all around. Some steamers use that system as condensers instead of having an inboard condenser with cooling water pumped through them. But that is not what I meant. An outside cooling tube system is to some degree vulnerable in groundings. To avoid that the space between between the two platings, call it double-skin or double-hull, is used to cool the engine water.

@@donnakawana It's a long time ago, but I still remember it was awesome. It was basically my first job and I was still going to school beside of it. It was in 2006, when I just got 15 and I was doing my first server-installments and network-stuff with the team-leader of us. We visited their HQ and they showed me their dry dock, their huge simulators and all this great stuff which normally nobody sees. We worked there for 2 days to update their network and when my team-leader did stuff I couldn't help with, I was allowed to go with one of the DGzRS dudes, who then showed me all of their stuff. It was awesome.

Awesome. I purchase my manufacturing equipment that is made in Germany, then ship to the USA🇺🇸. It’s the best equipment in the World. Living in the USA🇺🇸, I did my masters, new product development / manufacturing mechanical engineering apprenticeship with a German modeled engineering program that takes 10 years to complete. It’s that precise and vigorous. One can’t learn the 250 years combined mechanical engineering manufacturing training experience in a typical College degree.

I talked to a fisherman once. He told me that most fishermen make a point never to learn to swim. It is because if your ship sinks, you are as good as dead in the middle of the Bering Strait. If you do not know how to swim, you die in minutes. If you know how to swim, you may have an agonizing death that can take hours. The fisherman spoke very wise and profound words. Long distance fishermen should never learn to swim.
