I don't care where you come from, when you hear a good folk song (and a sea shanty is a particular type of folk song) it feels like a hand has reached down into your soul and pulled out something that's been inside of you forever.

It is, it’s something primal, it is familiar to all of us.
@deathtrapsnap

"Does anyone else feel a familiarity with sea shanties?" I swear with the history of shanties, theres something primal about singing and working. And a workers song like this just resonates inside and empowers us like it did the sailors, even when they were overworked, under slept and weeks away from home. And with our current global situation, we all feel distant from out normal lives and we feel like we are slaving through lockdown. I think the similar feeling helps drive this song deeper

I feel like it’s almost any work song, not just sea shanties... I noticed it with Geoff Castellucci’s cover of “Sixteen Tons” (originally by Tennessee Ernie Ford)- which is about coal mining

Shanties are a huge part of almost everyone's history, nearly every language have their own songs that pull people together, usually during hard repetitive work or difficult times to make people feel that camaraderie and lift moral. Still sung today in places, I've heard construction workers singing. I'm sure there is some part of the brain, maybe cell memory or something but we all connect to it. Very cool stuff.

Some linguists believe that things like sea shanties were the reason language came into existence to begin with - to coordinate and direct work done as a group. I suppose that's why sea shanties hit such a deep chord in us.

When you were talking about the difference in the bass singers, I looked it up. There’s actually 7 sub-categories within the bass voice type. Basso cantante (singing bass), hoher bass (high bass), jugendlicher bass (juvenile bass), basso buffo ("funny" bass), Schwerer Spielbass (dramatic bass), lyric bass, and dramatic basso profondo (low bass).

I think you may have accidentally clicked on something that fast forwarded to the end, because all of a sudden you can hear the end of the "Remix" version, which you skipped. Too bad, because that was a really great part, and we would have loved to see you reacting to it for the first time. (You've probably realized this mistake by now, but it's surely too late to do anything about it, as regards this video. 🤷🏼‍♂️)
