I don't know why but the sound of a good sea shanty is so soothing and puts me in a peaceful mood. The songs have such happiness but with a tiny bit of sadness. It feels like I'm having a jolly time with friends on a a creaky ship. With the cool breeze flowing across the ocean,filling our sales. The ship swaying in the water. Just singing the night away,celebrating a big haul of treasure. High spirits and rum in hand. Instruments being played and stories being shared. Doesn't that just fill your heart with a peaceful feeling that is as calm as the sea on a cloudless moonlit night.

You put working people in dire straits, and they start resonating with traditional songs. The TikTok craze about the Wellerman? That song is about whalers in New Zealand, who usually signed a contract to board a ship and go half way around the world, only to find once they got there that the pay was too low to buy a ticket home. They were wage-slaves to the company. It's not just shanties; Irish revolutionary music has made a comeback, traditional folk 'union anthems', and antebellum 'work songs' - music like that gets into the blood, like an inherited trauma etched into the collective psyche of the mistreated poor. And every era those songs were sung ended with those people rising against their oppressors.

@alganhar14 жыл бұрын
It's a modern 'take' on a sea shanty.... Original shanties pretty much had a purpose, some were arrival shanties, sung when a ship hauled into home port. The first song is one of these, during the age of sail a ship was paid off after a voyage, only a few members of the crew were permanent, the Master, Mate, Bosun and such, but most of the crew were taken on for the voyage. Other songs were working songs, drunken sailor is a sail song, ts purpose to keep men in rythm as they raised, lowered and furled sails. Ranady Dandy Oh is a Capstan Shanty, meant to keep men in rythm as they man the capstans used to raise/lower anchors and the like. Many of the 'shanties' from modern games are simply close approximations of the style, and not true shanties. Pirates for example would have sung the same shanties as other sailors of the time, they did not use their own. The second was a particularly bad example of this type....

Playing SoT solo and playing these shankies always perk me up and keep me sailing merrily, even keeps me calm during cannon exchange. It's event coursed a few opposing ships to halt as I opened my mic and instead of fighting we all sang together and enjoyed sailing the seas
