@@RavenSutcliffe werent they were written cuz what else are you gonna do while at sea for months on end while you work? I mean some were probably written out of hate of the captain but I'm pretty sure they were just like work songs
@RavenSutcliffe Жыл бұрын
@@datguymiller Most of them aren't written with lyrics that say anything about work or the captain, the most notable exception likely being Drunken Sailor (I know the Wellerman talks a bit about the job itself, but it's more a story about a ghost ship eternally attached to the whale, whereas Drunken Sailor directly references potential punishments for showing up to your shift drunk vs trying to help the guy out vs just playing a prank on him. Fun fact: the line "put him in the brig with the Captain's daughter" is not making reference to any actual woman, especially as they were believed to be bad luck on ships. This is actually the most severe punishment suggested in the song; "the Captain's daughter" was a nickname for the whip that was usually kept onboard precisely for severe punishment). And the rhythmic and repetitive melody is conducive to keeping a steady rhythm during chores. BUT. Sailors, and more specifically pirates, weaponized shanties. Because of the repetitive lyrics and melody, you can sing a million verses of this thing. An entire crew would start singing -not at the same time, but synchronized. Such that wherever the captain went, he would be hearing the song. If things were really dire and singing was too obvious they would hum, whistle, or even tap the melody on stuff. The point is that the captain would be hearing it from all points of the ship and wherever he went like he was being haunted. If he could silence a group in a corner, another corner would pick up. What was this for? To relay a message. If your crew is doing this instead of just regular singing while they work with interruptions in tune or change in song, it meant that the whole crew was in agreement that your management sucked and you either pulled yourself together or you were going to get mutinied. If a whole crew was in agreement of a mutiny, which was extremely rare, then people would blame the captain, whereas a divided or failed mutiny was a crime. Well, in the Navy it's a crime either way, but you know, pirates making their own laws and all. Tl;dr while this must not have been their original purpose, if your entire crew was singing the same shanty nonstop and you couldn't make them shut up, you were being issued a serious warning.

I cannot I never found this until I found the Wellermen Collab. I am in love with this song. Especially when you can just tell from the images and lyrics what exactly is going on. A crew, tired of their captain, decided they were done with him and decided to cause mutiny (which is in terms of a forcible revolt of a crew of sailors or sailormen) and you can just tell by the end of the song, the captain realizes his mistakes and pays for them by being forced to walk the plank and his now former crew sinks his ship so they can start anew with a new captain.

personally, I can't say Mutiny seems particularly metal and doesn't really fit as a sea shanty... doesn't mean it's not an amazing song, fantastically written, arranged, sang and produced. All involved should be damned proud of this.
@l.francesca47803 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it's a good song, but it's not quite metal and definitely not in the spirit of a shanty. It's a seafaring song, sure, but shanties are, by and large, work songs. They have a strong, consistent rhythm to coordinate movement among crewmen (everyone needs to pull at the same time to move the rigging, etc.) and the rhythm shifts which isn't really conducive to any sort of ship labor that I can think of. The rhythm of The Wellerman is the way it is for a reason. On top of that, as work songs, shanties have lyrics predominantly BY the working man, they would not be a duet between oppressor and oppressed. The Wellerman, again, as one of the best-known sea shanties right now due to meme status (and a great cover by Caleb and Johnathan among others), has lyrics pretty clearly by and for the working man disparaging their employer. The chorus is deceptive, but the song is basically "We're pretending a bunch of us didn't just die getting sunk by a whale for our greedy employer and we're going to work as best we can for one more day out here on this rock because the best we can hope to afford are petty luxuries. We can't afford to quit, and this line of work is dangerous, but we do it to afford what little we can for our families." If the lyrics were just from the perspective of the employed, I think it would fit a bit better. Lyrically, you could SAY the lyrics are from the perspective of the working man and it's wish-fulfillment fantasy of leaving their cruel captain adrift, but the art frames this as a song as, at best, a duet, and at worst, from the captain's perspective. This would be a good song in a seafaring film or anime in which the captain is meant to be sympathetic and perhaps would change his ways later on in the film, but it's not a sea shanty, or at least, it's antithetical to what the roots of the genre are. That said, its got good melody and is performed excellently. It's a good SONG. It's just not typical of the genres it wants to represent. It's not metal, not power metal, not any genre of metal I can think of, and it's not a sea shanty, but I'm not exactly sure WHAT it is other than a bop.
@shadowman212823 жыл бұрын
@@l.francesca4780 Yes, I can't imagine a bunch of sailors hard at work on ship or docks, all singing in unison about how maybe they should pull a mutiny on their captain would go down too well
@l.francesca47803 жыл бұрын
@@shadowman21282 Me neither. While shanties and work songs tended to be disparaging to the upper crust, the lyrics usually were more subtle, and when the lyrics WERE outright antagonistic, they were rarely sung at work, or at least not in front of the people the lyrics were about. You might hum the melody in solidarity with your peers so that your nasty boss couldn't prove who was doing it, but you'd only SING that stuff when you were untouchable. Work songs are usually transgressive against the elites, but when your captain has the support of your monarch and you're out at sea? Yeah, you only sing about mutiny if you're actively about to do it, and even then, best not let the captain see that you, personally, are singing it just in case that marooning doesn't stick.

Pirate fun fact. In the golden age of Pirates, the crew actually had some sort of democracy. Sure, they still followed the orders of the captain. HOWEVER, if they didn't like him, he would happily be kicked out of position. They wouldn't throw the captain overboard however. It would be MUCH WORSE then that. They would instead Marron him. In a nutshell, Marooning is basically finding a small sandy island in the middle of the sea, toss him there with some rum and a flintlock pistol. Then they would leave. Pirates were surprisingly lousey at swimming so he couldn't just swim away as he most likely didn't know how. The pistol was not for hunting. It is more for him to off himself after drinking all that rum. ALSO, Pirates got a contract that they had to sign before joining the crew. This would be sort of a code of conduct. Some would even offer compensation incase one of the crew members gets wounded or loses a limb. This code differed between ships but was generally the same idea. PS: Walking the Plank is a myth. No pirate ever walked the plank into infested waters.

I can sadly relate to this right now. My current managers are jerks, constantly criticizing and micromanaging, but then they confuse me by sometimes acting friendly and make me feel bad for them by complaining about how hard their jobs can be and the frankly ridiculous amount of hours they work (or at least one of them does). So I want to be mad but I can't, and it's kinda frustrating. I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster sometimes. The beginning of the song when Caleb sings "I'm your captain, you can't do this! You can't leave me!" and then transitions to "Oppressive?! I'm your captain! You are seamen! You are men of labor follow orders, get back to your stations!" so perfectly captures the way my own managers seem to flip flop between being diplomatic/friendly and overly critical/bossy. It's hard to know how I should feel about them, and I'm kinda sick of being treated so shoddily.
