"Written in 1972 in Miami, the first day I arrived there from Kansas City - also the first day I ever saw the ocean; which is kind of what inspired it. First performed by the band Kaleidoscope, a forward thinking sextet around Miami from which I learned a lot by getting to participate in, led by pianist Dan Haerle. The tune is played rubato, and the idea was to improvise on the form while staying out of time." ~ Pat Metheny

when does greatness begin? for Pat and Lyle, I have to imagine before they were even born! how much richer is the "Human Experience" because of Pat Metheny Group...

I literally watched Pat start out in Lee's Summit, MO & can totally identify with this inspiring music as I first saw the ocean at 18 too! Absolutely PERFECT! You ever want some poetry written for this just give a SHOUT OUT...MY MAN!

I bodysurf with Churchill fins- Bodysurfing since I was 8 in 1963, and this summer 2016, will be at it again, age 60, full tilt, on the Jersey coast again, God willing. I am greatfull, that a buddy introduced me to Pat's sounds, in 1977. 40 years, next year- my music experience would be diminished greatly.... without Pat Metheny!!

So long a top 5 tune for me. Listen to Eberhard's solo with focus on where Lyle, Dan, and Pat are taking us. Just a moment in the second half of Weber's wonderful bass solo.

A little googling found this from interview with Pat Metheny: there actually is a story that goes with "sea song"; it is one of the few pieces i have ever written that did literally show up based on a specific real life experience. that song was written when i was 18 years old. i grew up in missouri in the central part of america - the nearest ocean was basically 2000 miles in any direction. i didn't see a large body of water until i was 18 and i moved to miami. the first day i was there, i bought a bicycle and rode to the ocean to check it out. it made a huge impression on me - somehow i never really "got" the scale of what an ocean was until i saw it like that. i went home and wrote "sea song" that night. thanks for writing in and i am glad you like the music so much - best from pat m.

Yeah, I saw it, and often reminded of that quiet scene writing in a place like Lee's Summit.

Eberhard Weber on Bass, originally released in early 1977. Pat's 2nd solo release. Drummer was Danny Gottlieb. Lyle Mays on piano and synths.

Hmm...does anyone else hear bit's of "It's For You" in this? Or rather, does anyone else hear some of this in "It's For You"?

It seems like all artists borrow bits from themselves as they go along. I also heard a part that reminded me of "It's for You".

I've actually gotten high (not from the a drug), but from simply immersing myself completely and totally into this song, and have actually felt myself floating or drifting as if on a piece of driftwood on the water (again, no drugs involved) I just let the haunting , mellifluous sounds from this song take me away ......if you don't sense floating or drifting while listening to this song, well like Iggy sings, you're not being sincere. lol (ie: I'm a punk rocker)

Yes. Exactly. This has happened to me too. Certain drugs and auditory sounds are known to stimulate the same part of the brain in the exact same way. And i prefer vinyl over the other.

btw....was drifting to this song back in 79, way before there was this video of water, lol
