“Ingestion by marine organisms is occasionally documented in the scientific literature and mass beaching events are frequently reported along the European coasts, with obvious detrimental consequences to the local communities that have to manage the clean-up and disposal of this substance. According to Annex II of the MARPOL regulation, petroleum waxes are classified as “high viscosity, solidifying, and persistent floating products,” whose discharge at sea of tank-washing residues is strictly regulated, but currently permitted within certain limits. Starting from the description of a large stranding event occurred along the Italian coasts in 2017, we review the existing knowledge and regulatory framework and urge the relevant authorities to address this issue, showing that wax pollution is creating evident damages to the European coastal municipalities. Pending further investigations on the potential hazard that this kind of pollution is posing to marine ecosystems, we suggest a careful and more stringent revision of the policies regulating discharges of these products at sea.”

Offshore oil wells were first drilled to take advantage of the oil seeps, which once drilled stopped leaking into the ocean, tarballs in the so cal beaches dident show up so often, as they hunted and drilled the seabed seeps. The first oil wells were drilled where the oil seeped up out of the ground. La brea is prolly the most famous dryland petroleum (or, as wilferd brimley called the stuff, terpoleum) seep.

These deposits come from natural oil seeps on the sea floor. Oil naturally seeps up through the seabed and forms this parafin wax due to the chemical composition and sea temperature at the sea floor. Had it come from a ship or an oil rig (which there are few if any on the Atlantic side of Florida) it would never have formed this parafin wax since oil floats and the sea temperature at the surface is higher than the temperature that forms the parafin.

@Lcash218

@moodysbarber Yes, they are natural. Remember to follow the science not the politics of the issue. There are ZERO oil or gas wells in the Atlantic Ocean off of the eastern United States. There is no such thing as one responder to my original comment suggested, as a refinery ship. Refineries are very large land based installations that take up acres and acres of land and require loads of electrical power to operate. So there is no man made source for this parafin wax on the east coast. In fact it is an unusual type of parafin that would have been in the water for much longer than usual since most parafins are very heavy in tar and appear as black and brown wax. It is only through the leaching of seawater over long periods of time that could remove the tar from the parafin leaving behind only trace minerals such as those blue spots. Regarding the so-called refinery ships, the closest vessel that one could confuse with a refinery is an FPSO which is a Floating, Processing, Storage, and Offloading vessel. These can be in the form of a ship but are usually designed as a semi-submersible vessel. In order for these to exist in the Atlantic ocean you first have to have oil wells. These are used in areas that have no pipelines and use tankers to take on the crude. Since there are no offshore wells in the Atlantic (except for Cuba and Canada) there would be no FPSO's in those waters.
@TheAccidentalViking
@TheAccidentalViking Жыл бұрын
@@Poschet0423 These clumps are solidified paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a by-product of heating or distilling crude oil. When transported by cargo ship, it is heated and piped into the ship’s storage tanks. When the tanks are emptied at the destination port, paraffin residues remain clinging to the storage tanks and pipes. This residue was routinely being washed out to sea when ships rinsed out their tanks to clean them.

In Volusia County Florida there appears to be a social clique in county government that does not care about its beaches or they would have poured some resources into collecting the sea wax for the sake of the beach. As it appears an apparent neglect shrouds the county government should raise concerns where the money is going if improvements cannot be seen in your own home town.

I'd bet that the fish and many other sea creatures are consuming large amounts of this. When I was a kid we used to cut off a piece of Ivory bar soap, bait our hook with the soap piece, and catch fish. If I remember correctly, it worked better than worms ! That makes me think, it's not too far a leap to assume that fish would also consume the white, semisoft, flavorless paraffin wax. That's an ecological problem close to, if not on the same scale as an oil spill, or tar baĺls. Paraffin is just one of many hydrocarbons derived from crude oil. Probably causing a lot more problems than we can even imagine !

I had that same thought. If the can be "washed out" of the tanks, wouldn't oil also wash out into the sea? Or, that might refer to the tanks being washed...with the wash water dumped in the sea? It does seem more likely to be from wells and pipelines, and I expect that the wax is from crude that is significantly warmer than the water it leaks into. A little searching found that paraffins _might_ melt as low as 37C, but probably more like 45C to 65C, and the water at the sea floor is usually below 4C.
@jeffreyyoung4104
@jeffreyyoung4104 Жыл бұрын
@@drwalker9093 When raw, or crude, oil is pumped out of the ground, it has all of the same constituents including paraffin, in it. If there is a large leak of crude oil, once it hits the cold water, the oil and other constituents separate out in a cold distillation process. But the paraffin in the tanks of ships, is part of what is called bunker oil, it is the only part of oil, besides asphalt that has to be heated to be used! But the paraffin will build up in the tanks even tho the oil is heated, and when it reaches a point, they take steam hoses and flush out the paraffin, but the amount of paraffin is so little compared to the amount found on the shores it is silly to even think it comes from the tanks of the ships. But if you don't want people knowing where the paraffin comes from, you can lie and say it is from the tanks of ships...

Make it into candles. I have seen this stuff--it is used (or was) as a fuel for marine lighting, where the heat of the lamp keeps the wax melted. Drums of the stuff with clip on lids were used to transport it. It burns with a good white-yellow flame, and that was its advantage over tallow which was also extensively used. Somehow this once useful fuel has managed to get into the ocean, probably from rusted through drums, possibly escaped from WW2 shipwrecks, and floated to the surface. Use it to make candles. It would be a shame to just waste it.

@@notexpatjoe Yes. Paraffin wax is distilled from petroleum, a byproduct of gasoline production. Burning paraffin wax candles releases dangerous chemicals, such as carcinogenic benzene and toluene, into the air we breathe, which have been linked to lung diseases such as cancer, asthma, hormone disruption, low birth weight in babies, organ damage, behavior disorders in children, and more. You can liken sitting near a burning paraffin wax candle to sitting near the exhaust of a diesel engine. These chemicals are hazardous to humans and also to the animals who may be living with them. Now, think of the marine life ingesting it! !

This is a blessing from nature. It is a rare natural occurrence. The Indians used it as fuel. It is a high grade petroleum product that is naturally refined. It burns very pure and clean. It's made by nature in the ocean from minerals seeping from the ocean floor. Tribes would be sent to the beaches to collect all they can for as long as it was available as it was a very scarce resource and only seen once or twice in a generation.. I would be amazed to see this in person. You may have something like this in your own home, a candle maybe?

Hold on a sec, they said "from crude oil that is naturally released from the bottom of the sea" and then started talking about shipping. Crude oil seeping from the ocean floor is a very normal occurrence, been happening long before man ever existed. But what did happen, is the US government emulsified the BP Horizon spill. This didn't make the crude oil "go away" it just put it under the surface into giant balls that even the naturally occurring bacteria, that consume the raw crude oil, will not touch it. These "oil balls" are rolling around in the ocean(s). I really doubt that the US EPA is going to share their locations with us. It could come from ships, as they say, but Florida generally has a pretty small oil cargo vessel population, compared with Houston, New Orleans, Newark, New York, Chesapeake. Wouldn't this issue be more prevalent near those ports? Don't look for the easy outs by blaming the "oil companies", need to look at the shipping companies if it's the ships. But don't forget the other enemies of the environment, the ones who continue right under our noses. Real easy to turn this to a fitting agenda to cover the negligence of our own government.
@JoeSmith-cy9wj
@JoeSmith-cy9wj Жыл бұрын
I have a couple questions for you. I haven't studied this. The term emulsify or emulsifying describes breaking up large particles into smaller ones, and or homogination , where particles become so small the viscosity and serface tension of the solute becomes too great to overcome for the oil for coagulation . Indeed, they used ' dispersants ' on the golf rig spill, which would do the opposite if making a large ball. I was concerned about that because I knew there are natural seeps and figured nature already knows how to deal with them, but not chemically dispersed oil. And, why would oil sink rather than float? Perhaps as the sea draws natural H²O out it becomes more dense?
@kirk1618
@kirk1618 Жыл бұрын
@@JoeSmith-cy9wj the purpose was to get the oil out of site. The natural occurring bacteria would have taken time and public outrage was high. The public demanded governmental action. Instead of educating an ignorant public, they decided to hide the issue, at least for a temporary basis. When the oil balls wash up on the coast, they’ll make local news, but that’s about it.

Everything we do in our day to day, our clothes, vehicles things we use to cook, the technology we use everyday; like right now commenting here. All takes petroleum products. -- There isn't another sustainable resource that could take over the entirety of the petroleum market, not even friggin' close. All the weirdos in the comments on shit like this thinking they're the green-saviour or some shit, using paper straws and complaining on the internet. (again, a petroleum reliant technology) I worked in the oil and gas industry in Northern BC/Alberta, Canada for a decade. There is a lot of rules in place to eliminate contaminations to surrounding areas. But things happen, just like within' any other industry. And I can guarantee you they pay their share in legal affairs. (there also isn't anyway to pinpoint this to a specific company, so good luck with that. It could be teflon or another PFOA. They are waxy products and were dumped into the Ohio River and Cape Fear River by Dupont. Also by 3M in Minnesota and then sold to numirous smaller companies making Teflon coated cook ware, waterproof and permanent press shoes and clothes, Scotch Guarded upholstery fabrics, waterproof tents and other gear, ski wax, teflon tape for plumbing. Since they are flakey and then dissolve, they escape from consumer products into sewage sludge which was spread on farm land contaminating soil, water, food and game. You can see PFOA as foam on streams, rivers and now the foam is coating the ocean making toxic foam at the beach. This lady should have the wax tested. Handling it could cause harm. PFOAS cause diabetes, pancreatic cancer, thyroid issues and the most frightening , immune hypersensitivity via cytokine storms like killed people who contracted Covid. The combination of exposure to PFOA and inflammatory disease is deadly to people.
