Even though it's billions of years, it's still an incredibly sad topic. It's just very... scary to imagine a far future of no life, going on for trillions of years in cold blue light...
@Diablopray3 жыл бұрын
It’s not sad it just is. It wasn’t sad before humans were here and it won’t be sad after. Nobody will be around to experience it. I know it might be sad to think about now but it’s something you have to accept. Life is a gift but also a struggle, at least it will be the end of suffering.

Why is that sad?
@mjkittredge3 жыл бұрын
@@Diablopray you have a stunning lack of imagination, can't picture a future of vastly increased technological prowess and scientific understanding that allows us to survive all these foreseeable events? We're barely a hundred years into the modern human era of advanced technology and we're already a space-faring species. The coming decades could see the birth of AI that surpasses human intelligence. Some humans will leave earth and live elsewhere.
@Diablopray3 жыл бұрын
@@mjkittredge Lol, you’re incredibly naive son. Regardless of how far our advancements go, we won’t escape the end of our universe. Eventually dark energy will split even the most microscopic particles. If you think that somehow a machine will be able to survive the end of our universe, let alone biological life, then you are wrong. There is an end, and that is ok. Accept it, it’s not a bad thing.
@Diablopray3 жыл бұрын
@@mjkittredge Also, the end of human life could be tomorrow, it could happen at any time. We probably will be the cause our own demise in the end anyways without the help of a supernova, solar burst, or a meteor. If you think that AI will agree with us, and not form it’s own separate agenda that we can’t even begin to understand, then you are the one lacking imagination. For all we know, AI will consider life a meaniningless suffering that must end. Whether it sympathizes with us or not, we have no idea what it will do if it can truly think on its own. It may even think it is doing us and other life forms a favor by wiping us out, or maybe it sees us and other life as a threat and comes to the same conclusion. We have no idea what will happen, but the weight is stacked against us. Biological life cannot travel at the speed of light regardless of how far technology goes. It’s cool that you like to think we can and we will go on, it’s just not reasonable.

When the last day was reaching its final segment and the black dwarf was being described, I listened quietly… and felt a calm peace of mind. Even knowing that one day our solar system will cease to be all possibility of life extinguished, it almost feels relieving that it will just simply end quietly and peacefully.

600 million years from now? That's not long. We need to start preparing.
@Flesh_Wizard3 жыл бұрын
600 000 000 years is quite a while. For example, 600 000 000 years ago, the only life on Earth was bacteria, jellyfish, and simple shelled animals

I have been enjoying you're channel for some time now! Out of all the other many space and astronomy channels, you're content seems to outshine them all! All you're videos are excellently narrated ! With excellent graphics. You also have a keen way of making them exceptionally understandable! I wouldn't be surprised if you are a college professor ! Thank you for these terrific educational videos!

28:40 The white dwarf phase "incredibly stable..for trillions of years." Our successors likely will (appropriately) refer to that phase as the Main Sequence. This is one of the few videos that do a good/proper job of framing Earth's demise. Most tie it to Earth being engulfed during the Red Giant phase which is expected at around 2-4 billion years from now. But way, way before that (in as 'few' as 500M years), surface-dwelling complex life will likely no longer exist. And 'shortly' thereafter, complex ocean/subterranean life will also fully succumb. If that proves to be accurate, Earth's complex biome (the envisaged Earth we hold in our thoughts) is currently at the midway point of what will amount to a (paltry) 1B year existence.
@ShihammeDarc2 жыл бұрын
I think it'll be wrong to refer white dwarves as main sequence stars solely for it being the longest and most stable phase since in that phase stars do not produce energy and not every star goes through that phase either.
@jaybingham37112 жыл бұрын
@@ShihammeDarc It's just a fun poke at our use of language which often is quite biased. Planets can orbit a white dwarf. And notwithstanding the absence of fusion, white dwarfs still emit plenty of radiation and will do so for billions of years. Should a civilization arise in such a system, they may find it hard to believe stars in the fusion phase are capable of sustaining life. Whatever terminology they end up using, chances are it will de-emphasize phases other than the one they are experiencing.

I find videos like this to be both very relaxing and informative. Something about the death of stars, planets, galaxies and the universe itself fascinates and (for some reason) comforts me.

I like to imagine that if humanity or whatever evolves from it survives 600 million years we'll be scientifically developed enough to either reduce the sun's luminoscity (which you could theoretically do with some orbital shades i guess), or by moving the earth a bit (which is a lot cooler).

The best outro I have seen on a screen. How profound! I've just sat down with a steak and asparagus with a glass of white wine, by myself. Mid 40s, sat here in my dead parents house, I left my family and now I have no-one. I have everything but nothing. Now, what am I going to do with my precious time? Thanks for this.

Tritons might also be a good place for life to thrive in the sun’s final stage before being a white dwarf.
@TheRiverweasel093 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but as it is in retrograde orbit around Neptune and slowly getting closer, it's far more likely that it will get close enough to be ripped entirely apart one or two billion years too early.
@applesaucelord3683 жыл бұрын
@@TheRiverweasel09 true there is a good chance of that happening

Yep, I had a section on triton written for this but had to bin it off because of that very reason- its orbit around Neptune will eventually shred it up

Perhaps by the time any of this has a chance to happen, if we have somehow existed a species that long, we will have developed a method of space travel that will not only allow us to colonize other planets in other star systems but go between galaxies as well.
