I personally don't think it's a very big issue. Of course ideally all the water should go through the filtering media, but if say 5% of water doesn't - it's not the end of the world, this water will be filtered next time. It's not an inline filter in a water pipe where water bypassing the filter will never return and will never be filtered.

mifki I agree. A certain percentage of water will flow around the media. Only canister filters avoid that. My penguin 350 did it all the time. I've no issues with mine. Although I will confirm that the same small amount of water comes up from the back after a few days running. If you can't have a surface skimmer it's definitely a no go also. I personally love mine.

I didn't here you mention it but are you using the skimmer function, or do you have it closed off? Wouldn't that in general slow down your water intake, and lower you water lvl, in the media basket?

I have one, too. This happen because *it is dirty*. Infact, when it is dirty, water cames up from the back and enters in a little room: when there is no water in that room the indicator stay down, waters enters, it comes up. The proof is that when you set it at minimum speed, water doesn't overflow from the back and the indicator stay down. The 2 plume of water depends on filtration media disposition: try to move matrix until all the gap are closed. I hope this can help you, guys.

The Tidal is the best HOB out there. Rinse your stuff out once a week if it’s getting clogged. You might have excessive waste causing it to clog. I own two of them and have never had such a clear tank. You can’t expect the sponges and pads to hold all that crap for weeks. I’m not using a canister either to help it out. It’s doing it all by itself. My tanks remain gin clear!

The tidal filter will bypass 65%+ of water when clean. When dirty the water bypass is greater. More water pump/circulation than filter. Seachem needs to redesign the removable basket and send all owners the repaired basket...

I placed a plastic mesh at the bottom of mine so the sponge does not get squished into the open holes and limit water intake. No overflow and much better filtration I have found. Full flow and no bypass. I use about 3 inches of course sponge. Half inch of filter floss, a bag of Seachem Matrix and a bag of Seachem Purigen. All fits with no restrictions. Crystal clear water.

I have a Tidal 55 and do not have this problem. I notice you don't have a pre-filter sponge over the intake nor over the skimmer intake slots. I took a block of black filter sponge and used a scissors to cut out a section so that there's a nice pre-filter and also cut a thin strip of the same sponge that pre-filters the skimmer intake (mine stays in place just from the force of the incoming water). It prevented larger particles from prematurely clogging the filter in the basket. I have no over flow and the filter works great and is silent.

By the way why do you want to turn the skimmer off? It's one of the best design feature to polishing the water. The overflow bypass has nothing to do with the skimmer. Skimmer is your friend in filtration.

you dumb ass. did you actually watch the video? When feeding you want to turn the skimmer off and you can't, you can only turn it down. Now all the food is being sucked into the filter clogging the biomedia.

Think before you said stupid thing. The OEM design a skimmer for what? If you don't want the food get into filter then you can always turn off filter temporary for 5 minutes while feeding. That what most professional sump filtration have with their pumps called feeding mode that can turn off for 5 minutes then automatically turn back on by itself. Clogging Biomedia? do you know what you are you talking about? What does the blue foam come with the filter in the bottom of the filter box suppose to do? Since this filter has lots of empty space in filter box to add more as OEM design intended for people to fill, add couple more finer foam media then leave the bag of matrix media on top that way this filter will do the job better.

That filter is functioning as intended your foam pads haven clogged up and now your trying to push more water through than the clogged sponge can handle. Your blue indicator is telling you it’s time to clean it.

Travis Kershaw You clearly didn't fully listen to my comments on the video. At the time of making this video it and all of the pad, media and the filter were in fact clean. I suggest you buy one and see for yourself . Every 2 to 3 days the button would pop up . Anyways the filter has long since been returned.

If your tank is clear and more importantly your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are good, then you do you think you have a problem? HOB filters are known to have some bypass. If you do not want that then go with a canister filter where there is no bypass and you can usually put more media in them.

I filled mine up with 70 g.carbon Thére bio média and i have a 55g. Tidal and i never had that problem my bio média is at the very top of the basket and thats why mine indicates that its full.

I bought the tidal 55 and cut some floss to place after the seachem blue sponge because it is more of a course sponge versus a fine sponge.

i would just unplugg when feeding, but the water coming around the back seems unacceptable, i would like to see Seachem comment directly on this video, thanks for this video! i was considering the tidal 110 instead of the aquaclear 110 mostly because i want the skimmer and i like that the pump is submersed for quiet operation, not sure now, the aquaclear has a larger capacity and higher flow rate, just wont be as quiet as this

We must remove the basket and load the ceramics right on the sponge to the very top, but it works quietly compared to the same Fluval.

i think its a great filter sorry about your mishap but a little by pass in a h.o.b. is not not all that bad some canisters have some by pass it dones't really hurt any thing the water will just get filtered on the next go around.

Great review thank you. I am realizing that likely 75% of the water intake comes from the skimmer. 10% from the motor chamber openings, and very very little from the intake pipe. I have this filter on order and I want to inspect it and try it before I return it. I have several modifications (involving silicone) in mind, but need to think them through carefully before voiding my warranty. I got this filter very cheap on sale though, cheaper than the equivalent aquaclear. It would not be the only filter on a 75g. I do see though that this filter missed the mark as far as mechanical filtration goes.

And why aren't you using the skimmer I would think that would be the only reason you would have it since you already have a 406 . So I'm not sure why you have that filter or any other hang on the back filter

Strange, I run a Tidal 35 and a Tidal 55 , I have no problems with bypass when using the media supplied with the filter , I put a thin layer of polyester floss between the sponge and matrix, never have any problems , don’t know what I’m doing different to you but mine just works perfectly..I think if you try to use to much media you will get bypass, but I just use the supplied stuff like you plus a thin layer of polyester floss ..You probably got a faulty one .

Water will always find its way up the back of the basket. It will find any gap unless it was sealed which is impossible because the basket needs to be removed at times. I wouldn’t use the basket I would just put my media in the actual filter, Bit more awkward to clean but not too much of a issue. More space for media as well.

honestly surprised you think the c4 is that much better, i have aquaclear 50, fluval c3, c4, and now tidal 75 and i'd say this is my favorite so far. you really think the media isn't bypassed somewhat in the fluval c too? I mean come on - there's plenty of places in the fluval C for water to bypass the foam pad - not to mention the water is split and takes two paths - so half the water isn't going through the pads and instead goes on a tiny piece of a fabric on the little tiny drip tray, which holds a pretty tiny amount of biomedia all things considered. i feel like these can hold a lot more media for what it's worth, even if some water is getting bypassed it's still more media with just as much (if not more) water going through it. infact the tidal 75 is rated at 350gph and the fluval c4 is only rated to 250gph - so even if it's losing 100gph from that slight bypass, is it really bypassing that 100gph difference? i just don't see it. turn it down a little bit to match the c4's flow rate and i bet it won't be bypassing it anyway, lol.

i guess time will tell, i also noticed the "filter dirty" indicator seems somewhat useless. I'm still setting up the 29g tank i'm using it on, so I can't speak to it's effectiveness at clearing a dirty tank yet, but flow wise as well as noise wise - i'm impressed thoroughly. However, it doesn't come with any fine floss - just a course foam pad and biomedia, and you said you added carbon - but did you not add any floss? realistically - clearing fine debris quickly is the job for filter floss - the C4 has that foam pad that has a fine floss-lining on the one side so it can catch the fine particulates fairly well

well I personally watched debris floating directly past the intake tube of the tidal . my review isn't a Seachem dig or anything just stating fact . You may also watch the review that angry fish guy did on the same filter .

sure - but i think for people using it on saltwater they more want it surface skimming than anything - i don't even have downtubes/intakes on most of my saltwater tanks. maybe a moot point for some people.

LXXero, You state all the correct points. I used almost all the HOB on market except few crappy one. I can honestly said this most HOB have many flaws but Seachem have only two minor flaws but make up for extra points for good design, skimmer, heater clip, good water flow, self prime, multi flow control, pump inside safer so impossible for leaking if motor housing cracking. One is the bypass that easily can be fixed which I did by remove three small tabs in the back of the filter basket so that it has no more back gap between the basket and the filter housing. Two is for the price they charging especially the model 110 they should give more media like whole bag of matrix instead only 1/2 portion bag. C4 I like it too but it's can not compared to Tidal design. Of all filtration manufacturer I always like Fluval for their innovative designs from hob to canister. C4 is no exception when it's first introduced, OEM design very smart to split the flow into two paths. Once for heavy mechanical, the other is semi wet/dry style for good bio filtration. C4 flow is not even close to Tidal Wave 75 flow, 260 vs 350 gph. I personally use my Tidal Wave 110 for my reef and fish tank for pure skimmer and excellent flow with few modify to optimized for marine environment. My friend has a 75 model for planted tank and 110 model for cichlid tank. IMHO Seachem has the winner in this filter series, not bad for a first time in filter market.

Drill holes in the basket. U need the water bypass for safety reasons. The problem with this device is the basket intake. Drill like 2 to 3 rows of 10mm to 13mm holes at the bottom of the basket.

I've got 3 of the 110 units, my only issues are 1) you can't turn the skimmer off, so when one of my large snails decides to go eat all the debris on the skimmer, the filter makes a ton of noise because it has little to no suction from the below intakes. My second issue is similar to yours, I have a coarse sponge covering both bottom intakes to help filter out debris, the overflow takes in the remaining debris and sends it into the filter. I have the blue coarse sponge, a medium and fine sponge before my matrix bag and yet, every time I open the lid, I see debris all over the matrix bag? Can't figure out how large pieces of debris like that are managing to bypass all the sponges in the filter. I am considering placing another coarse sponge on the waterfall area where the water first enters the media basket. Still looking for options to block off the skimmer entirely.

The water is supposed to do that, it’s coming up from underneath the filter media and then overflows through slots and holes in the white basket that are up above the filter sponge...all the water in the basket and the overflowed water behind the basket is all filtered water...it’s all coming up through the filter media regardless...your wrong, this as an awesome filter!!!

Nice quality video. I found it very informative. The tops of my tanks are covered in duckweed so I am concerned that the skimmer will cause problems. Too bad it can't be turned off.

Perhaps I can explain.....Everyone uses different filter material in the tray....water flow through that media will vary. The adjustment is used to provide maximum flow through your choice of media. This must be adjusted when the media is fresh so the float will show when to clean it. You don't want water spilling over the media tray. Ok?

I love my Tidal 55, which replaced my NOISY AS FUCK Aquaclear 50. I have the flow turned all the way down though, as I have floating plants and can't have them being shot across the water surface like a bullet. Turning down the outflow also makes this bypass thing a non-issue - the water isn't close to rising to the top of the basket. Note this is on a 25 gallon tank, I realise reducing the flow as much as I did won't be an option for people with larger tanks.

You are 100% correct, great point , I've been saying that to all people who posted videos on this filter . This is a big issue . Aqua clear is still the king . Tidal needs to fix this issue, the filter is well built and has nice features but what's the point of water bypasses media lol. If they fix this issue this filter will be the best. I can dyi it and fix this issue but why should I do that if I am paying top dollar for this filter

I think the design flaw is in the media basket, not the filter, the basket should have been about a 1/4 inch taller, i have the 55 and have the same trouble, even with filter floss my tank still gets cloudy from the water bypass if i turn it right up. surprisingly the marineland bio wheel filter keeps my tank crystal clear with just the recommended filter and a bag of purigen.

I know this is an old video but I have two of these and posted a long comment and mods that I did to mine on “ bentley pascoe” youtube channel. But, as others have said, even the best canister filters have water bypass but 95 to 98 percent of the water is going through the various media.

Just turned on new unit. Fresh out of the box, with stock fully soaked sponge, and stock little bag of pumice. Brand new media. Lots of the water bypasses the white basket & media by flowing up outside of/in the front of the basket. A significant percentage of the water. Like a third or more. Not just a little bypass. See the two areas of surging water he points out. I’m seeing the same or more on this Tidal 75. The path of least resistance is up the outside of the white basket and up through two large rectangular openings at the top of the front of the white basket, above the stock media, and then out the spillway. I ran a strip of duct tape over those rectangular holes and now the two surging areas are gone. Smooth, level flow is now coming over the lip. Now there’s minor bypass on the sides of the white basket. It’s working correctly now. -Water hitting media vs bypassing it. Any more, or finer media and I bet I’d see bypass from the back of the basket too. No way I’m going to leave it taped up overnight though. Someone put those rectangle bypass holes in the basket for a reason. Problem solved? Anyone else cover those holes? If so, any problems or flooding? Long story short, this product reviewer is correct. What’s the point of having a filtration system if so much water bypasses the actual filter media?

@@JosephKarthic The Aqua 70 is a great filter the only time it will really bypass is when its dirty. Otherwise that's what my secondary filter is . Clean the filter itself and it will last you a long time..

@@JosephKarthic one thing you can do if you have a lot of power outages would be to make sure your aquarium is topped off . That way your filter will start when the power comes back on . You could also get a small generator.

If you want your food to sink just presoak it for a few seconds. This works great with flake food and sinking pellets. If you are using floating pellets I don't know what you can do. Surface skimming is very important to break up the biofilm that can develop on the surface. This is the whole point of skimmer/overflow in a sump/wet dry setup. A little bypass is no big deal. Of course if that is a big issue you should be using canister filters.

You probably have to turn it off while doing water changes as the skimmer would just pull massive amounts of air in correct? Thats a deal breaker for me if its the case.. I don't really keep my tank full to the brim, just 70-80% full as I got jumpers. Do you think that would effect these filters as it wont be skimming water but rather than air at that point??

Don’t think it’s a mechanical error mainly a user error. It will get dirtied faster due to the surface skimmer and regular filtration. Over feeding and like you said media dirty all the time. Dirty media means it’s doing its job.

Sammuel Jackson I didn't say the media was dirty or that I over feed . Everything was brand new . Like I said buy this piece of crap and you'll see for yourself . I've been keeping fish for 25 years. I know the difference between when a filter is working and not . This filter performs very poorly. When you waste your $75.00 you'll see for yourself .

I have this filter and it does not do this because my activated charcoal is not plugged and my sponge, clean out the sponge and rest of the filter your getting bypass more than likely from one or two of those things being plugged I keep my media clean and do regular maintenance this does not happen. You are probably sucking up too much food with the skimmer also. I have it on a switch so I can turn it off for feeding. This is really not such a bad filter I am running it on a marine tank at the moment on a quarantine tank for saltwater fish. You already have a great filter on that tank and if you want something that works really good aquaclear HOB filters are bar none one of the BEST filters tried tested and true you can also run a skimmer designed for them I have owned every aquaclear filter they have made and still run them because they have tons of spare parts purchasable for them shafts impeller motors Anything! A totally rebuildable filter! And a name that stands the test of time easy! They even look exactly the same as they did when I was five I am 40 now that's how long aquaclear filters have been around.

Turn off filter for the short time you feed, I do that for any filter cuz I dont want food in the intake….only enough food at a time to feed in 2 to 3 minutes adjusted for number and size of fish…

fluval C series filters are awesome. very little bypass on max, but don't give as much flow.. but what's the point of having more flow if its not filtering your water. also, aquaclears have terrible bypass too.

It's really too bad you didn't prove to us that your media box was dirty. The blue tube that comes up on the cover is there to show you the media is dirty. You should have shown us your supposedly clean media box. Because you didn't, I don't have any reason to believe that the HOB wasn't functioning as designed.

By no means your fault, it’s your fault. Most filters don’t come with what you need to set it up properly. You have to do that. Your bio media is getting dirty because you need filter floss on the bottom of the filter. The blue sponge that comes with it is very porous and let’s the debris right through. I agree that filters should come with everything you need but they don’t. You could just block the vents to the skimmer area.

I also found my Tidal 75 to have a lot of bypass right out of the box, and the intake is near useless. It's frustrating to watch poop and debris float right by the intake without getting sucked in. I don't understand why it continues to be so highly recommended. Usually reviews are a good indicator of good performance and expectations. I don't get it.

I have the 110 and i have the dial turned all the way down and the water is coming out really fast. is it supposed to do that? I just set it up today. I've had to stuff a mesh bag inside to try and slow the flow of water. if i turn the dial up it makes a grinding noise.

on this filter it has a k nob to open and to and close take off bottom tube and turn knob you will see it open and close and as far as the water on theses filters water will fined away threw the media I see it in my aquaclear 70 I would not worry about it until the over flow pops up and how many fish do you have goldfish puts off alot waste . I no but if you use charcoal and amonia remover in it all fine waste stays in it I clean mine once amount the same time I clean my caster filter. You no I can't believe the waste I get out of sponges and charcoal and I put a little bag of amonia remover in mine. Hi so you think gold fish do not make a lot more waste I am not talking little gold fish I can prove that gold fish half way more waste all you do you a filter that you you refile pad I had them fill up and the water would over flow. I you two aquaclear 70 filters and a canster filter when I feed them and the size waste they put off I have black more and other kinds of fancy tail goldfish . That filter tidel with that little sponge is atoy to my aquaclear 70 lay filters out of both and looks at the size difference and tell me this tidel can do what my aquaclear 70 great suckion to Handle alot of big waste I never seen tropical fish ever but waste I had two arandas my fish get big very fast . You do not half to take my word study different kinds of gold and you will see the large waste I feed mine pellets I do not get waste on bottom like flakes gold fish can get big and they get the bigger waste they put off . My two aquaclear filter six hundred gallons per hour than my canster two hundred and sixty five gallons per hour and I youse a uv water sterillizer has a pump but in I youse for waste moving so the filters suck it up when I clean filters you would not believe all Tha waste I get. I have a c4 that I like quite a bit . Fluval makes great stuff . The tank already has a fluval 406 canister . I just like running 2 filters the HOB kinda helps remove smaller particles.

HOB filters like canisters are the same crap but if its only the back of the filter it can be "repaired. silicone a cutted gasket on the back so that it gets water proof and its done.

sending the piece of junk back fixed it . Fluval c4 is a much better choice for me . I certainly shouldn't be expected to have to repair their shoddy design .

You mention around the 1 minute mark that the blue button floats up when the filter needs to be cleaned. Since the blue button is up, wouldn't that explain your bypass issue?

No restrictions with how the media was loaded in? It's designed to bypass when the media clogs, so it doesn't make sense that the button would pop from day 1.. weird. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for this review. I was thinking about getting one of these. Not being unable to turn off the skimmer would be no good for me and the blue plug that goes up when the flow is turned up would be really annoying, along with the bypass.

Seems like user error... most of us have the same exact issue when you dont fully clean out your media basket and your sponge. You're foam sponge at the bottom is probably filled with particles from over feeding

This filter did this when it was perfectly clean . I've kept aquariums for over 25 years. This is absolutely the worst filter I've owned .

i guess thats what you should expect from filter that has a lot of open space and open channel like HOB. Probably the price wise is the one that makes people unhappy.....its way too expensive for HOB filter.....crazy

The seachem tidal is nothing but hype. Cant stand my 75. Filter has been replaced already due to no start issue after 5 months

I'm not happy about my Tidal either!!!! I want my Aquaclear back!!!!! :'( I do think it's extremely quiet, and I do love that it's self priming; but in the first 60 days my flow control stopped working. I set it on full open, and now it's only working like I have it turned all the way down. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is disappointed in this HOB filter, even though we're having different issues.

for HOB filters I like and use penguins bio wheel folters. You can skip using the cartridges it comes with, and use sponges and Polly phil filter floss. The bio wheels are great biological filters.

It has a very small mechanical filtration. Bad design. Even a cartridge filter has more surface contact with water and works better because they’re vertical. These tidal small sponges get clogged faster because all other media pushes it down specially the floss ones.

AquaClear filters are still the best :) ! Another thing is when it comes to filter don't go buy what the company say it's for! You want 8-10x the gph for HOBs and for canister at least 5x. So you actually wan the Tidal 110 :)

Every filter has some disadvantages, even AquaClear like when they don't restart after a power failure. Or the motor that's attached to the filter box can leak and drip on the floor.

I don't mean to offend you, but these complaints seem unreasonable. Mine does the same thing and has managed to clear up the water in my tank faster than any other filter I've used. Granted I have the 35 gallom version, but still. I've used AquaClears, Marinelands, Aquatops and more. This has been working far better than any of those filters.

Did Seachem get back to you? As I understand it, you have a defective unit. Having said that, I do agree with some of the other comments - take out the media and replace it with sponge and floss. I'd also remove the carbon, they're only useful for taking chemicals out of the water.

I ALWAYS customize my filtration I run three of the tidal 110 and mine flow perfect when you stack your media right ... This filter is just as good as an aquaclear 110 but quieter and I've been keeping tanks for over 30 years

Have a 110 Tidal on 29 gallon and it sucked. Water hazy and always pushing basket contents out the top even just 2 or 3 days later after cleaning. Put a Aquaclear 70 and boom crystal clear water. Tidal is a piece of crap gimmick.

You are thinking to much lol its because it's dirty clean it and just fill up the bag, turn off your other filter and you will see the tidal is doing a good jump you just haven't cleaned the poop

This is why I run Seachem Tital 75 along side of my Fluval C4 Power filter and my water is great and I dont have the water bypass problem that you have I guess it's just a faulty filter?

Thanks for that review. I was thinking about purchasing it. The surface skimmer really impressed me along with the other features. If it clogs that easily then I will probably go with a canister filter and attach a skimmer to it.

Get rid of the Media. Use Floss instead. It'll flow better. Put that bag of Media in your canister filter. Proper Beneficial Bacteria take weeks to be useful. Trying to grow it in a HOB in my opinion is useless. Get the Penguin 400 instead of the 350. Your take is Crystal as is. I run the 350 and the 400 on a 75. The 400 Hands Down is the Best HOB. I would run 2 of them but not enough room for my intake pipes. I also have 2 canister filters on the same tank. I set up my 400 and I have Purigen in one sleeve and Algone in the other. I snipped the inner slats except for the middle ones and the amount of choices of Media ect. are endless. Trust me get the 400. You can sell me your Seachem for $30. LOL. I'll use it to replace my 350. I cant stand the 350. Every few days it needs some type of attention. I set up that Monster 400 It'll run a month easy with no issues. Nice Tank by the way...

@@siberttron aye but filter companys set their filters up weird so that you have to buy more parts, sponges, fine pads etc. I usually throw all that in the bin and set my filter up to run as efficiently as possible.

Thats a saltwater filter. The viscosity is much different from saltwater to freshwater. Hence, the water will act differently running through that filter.

AquaCreation it's funny that your not worried about the water circumventing the entire filtering process. This filter is a glorified surface skimmer . the design doesn't force the water through the media . it in fact allows the water to bypass it all together. I suggest you buy one and look at the design your self.

yea i mean, since its already like that, you cant do anything about it.. i personally use the Gex Large hang on, remove the original filter and i place media all inside and at the top fine white wool.. it slows the flow but still pretty alright and traps all the fine particles at the wool. ultimately the filtration is still do-able.

Ok. A new tidal. Then just turn the up and down the water flow dial many times.this will solve any further problems.with any tidal hob filter.
