For those confused by the 60+ Gold Get, it's a bug in the game that's being exploited. The 6 in the first digit is a symptom of the Z80 carry flag being accidentally set before a DAA instruction which calculates the amount of gold to add. This isn't an intended feature.

When I was five years old we visited my dad's backwater hometown in Italy. There were maybe 50 people still alive and they were all very old. We were high up the mountain. Every day my grandfather would give me a few thousand lire and he'd tell me to walk down the mountain to the bar to buy him a beer. The old men at the bar would make change for me, and then prop me up next to the one arcade machine they had, which was Wonder Boy in Monster Land. I loved this game so much. I remember being stunned that one of the first enemies I faced was DEATH haha. I was so proud of myself when I finally beat him. After I had a play or two, they'd give me the beer and I'd dutifully truck it back up the mountain to my grandfather. Great times.

This takes me back to my days as a kid in Korea. Back then there were guys who would absolutely kill this game and somehow knew all secrets with no internet or other reference to speak of. That being the case, the fact that it was about 50 won per game (about 5 cents?) back then, I'm sure they got plenty of practice.

Me too, i used to finish the game with a coin and knew every secret coin available, i learned watching other play and with a lot of practice. 80's game were tough but linear, once you know how to move and what to expect is kinda easy beat the game.

Full Legendary I see. During my playthrough of it, I somehow missed the Legendary Shield ... I also missed the last part to upgrade my shield so.. Leather Shield all the way! At least it was fabulous purple!

when i was a kid, i used to play this game every visit to the arcade... it took me about 45 minutes to complete... what i don't get though; why the player here buys the purple shield & armor while he has money for the better version... i always bought the best available so i could end up with the legendary armor, shield, shoes quite early & the legendary broadswoard at the later part in the game.. for those who doubt; it's really no cheat to get lots of coin on the clouds/buildings/hidden drops... i knew this trick when i was 8-9 yrs old in the '80s. In my opinion this is the best wonder boy game of the series, and it was, together with bubble bobble my favorite game of all time (ps: for bubble bobble also exists "tricks" that give you more power than a normal player who doesn't perform the trick) Back in the days i also had a sega master system, this game on that system was not a 1:1 clone; there were subtle differences which made me love the original much more... this game will be in my heart forever!

I remember watching someone in a milk bar finishing this game when I was a kid. I played this last night and found it very hard: Your attack doesn't have much range and enemy patterns require precise timing. The hourglass turns quickly and takes a whole heart each time, so you cannot grind for gold and have to get all that extra gold in the minimum time possible. It is really designed to be practiced over and over from the beginning until you can clear it in a single run through like this.

There's an MMA fighter called Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson. So what I was thinking is to make a Romhack called Wonderboy in MMA Land where instead of Sword, Shield, Boots and Armor, it's MMA gloves (Sword), Training Pad (Shield), Shoes and Training Gear (Armor). Instead of Monsters, it's other fighters from MMA.

When I was young, I was finishing this game with more than 5000 gold and just the basic equipment. There have a lot of tricks to finish the boss with full life. For the last boss, just jump and hit by jamming it against one of the wall. Beaten in 30 seconds max

You must be Johnny on the spot and have had shit loads of practice to get to 67 gold, before you even get your sword! Be interested to know what rom this was as it was never released in any English speaking countries, so they are all bootlegs essentially. One bootleg I played in a seaside arcade back is ‘89, on level two as you progress far right to the health shop. If you don’t buy anything and exit the store like two or three times, she says “fuck you/off” and the shop closes permanently! What charming manners from a nurse no less! Anyway great play through, as knowing about the gold exploit if you can call it that, really hello to get the best boots, shield and armour (not to mention buying drinks and health revitalisers) to help you get through what I was class as a challenging game, and quite a large one playtime wise, for the year it was released in 1987.

Andrea Babich on the master system version i thought the second dragon was the main dragon and the first 1 was a different 1 before the real dragon but looking at this it was the main dragon all along as he just transformed into a more powerful form and stronger boss

Have now looked at some Wonderboy to adore, apparently nobody knows the trick, now I'll just write it in the comments. In the Sphinx Round, where the spikes are and you keep getting gold, you have to stand exactly on the groove. So look a few millimeters from the edge in the direction of the spines. Always shortly before a piece of gold touches the third last spike, you have to jump and stab at the same time. If you do it accurately enough, you get 68 gold for every gold piece!

this game along with ghosts and goblins are the epitome of platformer fun! the only downside I see for this game is that its jump are not as the ghosts n goblins jump which are pre fixed aka realistic, meaning you do have control of your jump momentum in mid air (which I don't like) this kind of jump momentum control only worked best in Super Mario Bros.

A few differences I experience: 1. The hidden gold caches in your game give you more than 60 pieces of gold, but in my game, they give less than 10 2. It appears the version I play, I keep on missing the boss and get hit by boss when I actually hit them (graphically I hit them, but I am the one who lose HP)

I know others have mentioned the wiggle gold trick, I don't see a way to max equipment without that reasonably... about #2 - there is a very short window of invulnerability you can exploit immediately when you get a positive hit on an enemy including bosses - so long as your hit registers first you should not take a hit for about a second-ish

I believe, i still have this game on my Amiga 500. I had it on my Commodore 64 as a tape version, but it was dissapointing 😹. The Amiga version of this game is cool, but the arcade version seems much better 😺👍🕹️.

Me and a group of friends played this daily in our local sweet shop. The old lady who owned the shop had 2 arcade games there. We loved this game and between us we luckily found hidden doors etc. We never managed to clear it though I got furdest though shortly after a big monkey giant behind a hidden door I think. Hey Napoli , regarding your first question 1) the historic equipment are called "Legendary" in the game , there is a Legendary Sword, Legendary boots , Legendary armor and Legendary Shield. In the video you can see how the player is getting them. You need to follow the correct order like he does , in order to get them all. 2 ) The grey small ghost can only appear in specific parts of the game , check what the player of the video is doing after 26:30 and 29:30 . Usually you need to kill the red ghosts first and then the grey ones will appear. 3) To get 65 gold it is more easy and usual to get them with the magic tornado power. You can get them also if you jump and press "left" "right" "left" "right" several times before you fall on the ground, but its more difficult. I hope this helps you :)
