I commented on verbal praise today in the Day 1 video comments. I will mention it again now. When he is petting the heifer, he could be saying "good" (which seems to be his reward sound, and marker sound). This is a weakness for dog and livestock trainers. The more you can use the "good" when the animal is doing what you want the more it will understand. Also, when giving physical reward such as petting, you should simultaneously be using your reward sound "good", this is a form of "charging the word/sound". I know this is not knew to trainers, but what is new, is how the idea is used. Many dog and horse behaviorists are not good about doing this. The animals understanding will improve much faster with the proper use of this idea. With dogs and livestock I seem to get away with a two sounds. I correction sound and a praise sound. In some cases I teach the word "stop, or come", which would be the command sound. With multiple animals a person might need a name as an identifying sound. In any case, command sound is follow by a reward or correction sound within micro seconds after the either follow or fail to follow the command. This comment is not meant for a new or inexperienced trainer. I have left out other principles such as "too much too soon". I hope it helps, the fellow commenter, or even manages to get back to Ed Crothers.

He said desensitizing the legs and picking them up with the rope isn't all that necessary, but I bet it would help a lot if you need to trim the hooves.

I don't think this is the same heifer as in the day one video. This one is heavier, shorter legs and has a yellow ear tag. Hmmmmm
