The "locked" gyro example is precisely what I was trying to describe in a comment long long ago. Better explained and demonstrated than in my comment which described the result of constraint but not the reason. Even so, the string constraint isn't perfect so there will be some effect. In any case the example is superb. (Yes, I majored in physics, actually Engineering Physics, in 1954, but I used my experience throughout a long career in aerospace and industry.)

I just figured out why I couldn't understand physics in grade school! The "symbolism"! The using of words and symbols that lack meaning to the observer and listener! I became aware of it at the point you wrote "dL" on the board, I got hung up on trying to figure out what you meant by that and stopped paying attention, just long enough to not understand the next point, which was "dt" which then I feel behind again trying to understand that, by then you had moved on and completely lost me! And that is what happened in the classroom! But, it could not be watched over!!

Hi. Great video, but I still have a doubt. As you say on min 3:35, when an instant torque changes the angular momentum of the disk, it will remain in the new position until a new force appears. So, why does the ship stabilize? If I tilt the ship by a applying a force on one side, I will feel a resistance proportional to the angular momentum of the spinning wheel, but why does the ship afterwards stabilize, and does not remain on the "tilted position". I suppose that mass distribution (ship design + devices) is the responsible for balancing the ship back to its initial position, but in a very slow motion because of the same rotation resistance of the gyroscope. I don't see any stabilization of the ship because of the spinning wheel, apart from a "tilt resistance". What am I missing? Thanks.

I suppose you're correct. "tilt resistance" doesn't mean "stabilization". If you put a long constant torque on the boat, it would eventually turn over despite the gyroscope, but the boat is subject to the stabilizing buoyancy force.... the problem is that the waves add large oscillations in this force. The gyroscope provides what could be thought of as increased inertial mass to the boat, so it doesn't get bounced around on short time scales, allowing the average stabilizing buoyancy force to prevail even over smaller time scales... very good, thanks.

Basically, the ROLLING motion caused by waves is forcing the boat into a rocking motion on the BOW STERN axis due to the gyroscopic precession (90 degrees) of the gyro.

Does the left boat have a flat bottom, and the right boat have a super-steep 22 degree bottom??? THAT alone would make up this difference. However, a steeper bottom is best when plowing through the waves, so this gyro would be great, if it works.

the gyros do work. the seakeeper is an improvement on systems that have been used on huge ships such as cruise liners for over 95 years but doesn't require the use of huge fins that stick out from the sides which not only limited when the stabilization occured but also risked damage to the ship if the fins hit something. the seakeeper also works when the ship is in dock, just trawling or at full speed unlike most other systems of the past. the boats are the same model with the same bottoms. you are just seeing how much of a difference in the rocking of the boats with one having a seakeeper while the other doesn't when the waves hit. the gyroscope weights depending upon the model at 900 pounds moving at 9000 rotations per minute when spun up fully. it is also not a passive system it senses when the waves hit and moves the flywheel accordingly.

It's probably a little known fact that if you constrain a gyroscope such that it cannot tilt when you move it, it does not resist at all. It only resists when it has some slight freedom to tilt towards it's normal tilt direction. I suspect the new Navy EMALS catapults, which store energy in large gyroscopes use that effect to avoid having to worry about ship motion. Two gyroscopes spinning in opposite directions, coupled together would not have any resistance to axis change.

Hi. Yes, flywheels have been explored as a means to store energy and release it later. A device capable of stabilizing a car is possible, but likely, it would require the entire gyroscope to be on a 3D bearing so that it didn't prevent the car from driving on varying road angles. I think it would require a considerable amount of active feedback.

Hey Peter, sorry for a question on an old video, but was wondering if you could expand on one of the points you make. You demonstrate that if you lock the gyroscope with strings to prevent movement on the Y axis, even when the rotor is spinning the gyroscope becomes easy to turn on the Z axis. But if the rotor is spinning as shown there's still a large angular momentum in the upwards direction. If you then turn the rotor on the Z axis do the same principles not apply? The rotor will want to twist on the Y axis. Is the angular momentum pushing the rotor inwards or outwards on the Y axis just counteracted by the string? I guess I don't understand why locking the Y axis with string it would make the large angular momentum going up easy to change direction.

Hi Suputra. The torque acts to turn the frisbee to the right, with the far side getting pushed upward. This torque results in a change of momentum to the right, to be added to the present angular momentum as I attempted to illustrate with the vector addition on the board.

You just solved a major puzzle i had a year ago. I tried to make an inertial platform for a camera setup. For the life of me I could not get decent stabilization. The reason why is I had the gimbals locked. I think this means I should use BLDC motors with feedback sensor where gimbal bearings would be. This way I can do CMG aiming of the camera, but basically have a inertial platform afterwards. It also means I need to redesign a bit so that there are no singularities that can form as the gyros freely rotate.

But the gyro is not absorbing the waves torque? Ive not figured this out yet.. but its truly amazing a very small spinning object in the stern can stabilise a 200ton ship in choppy sea!

its not exactly small its 900 pounds moving at 9k rotations per minute. big ships tend to have several of them.

Great question. There's likely many ways to look at it, but try this: Think of the way the gyroscope will tilt (precess) if you apply a torque. If the gyroscope is locked, it can't move this way. The strings or other locking mechanism provides any torque necessary to prevent this shirt. That very torque shifts the orientation in the same direction as your applied torque. So, your experience is that you apply a torque, and the gyroscope rotates as if it wasn't spinning at all.
