Sealed subwoofer box design for home theater

In this video I'm going to show you how to design a sealed subwoofer box using an Excel spreadsheet. It's super easy. Also, we are going to use that information and build an active subwoofer using Dayton Audio parts.

In my experience of using plate amplifiers. Some leak & some don't and for that I don't trust any of them! So I do exactly what Dayton Audio said. Completely separate the subwoofer from the plate amp. When I make these small enclosures I'm usually using. A subwoofer & 2 passive radiators & it has to be air tight for proper tuning. So avoid the folly & just believe that they all leak. Then design around that information & the success rate will increase. 👍🏾

The back of the amplifier is removable by unscrewing the screws on outside of amp. It’s sealed with a felt gasket like material. Check to see if screws are tight or try adding a better gasket.

Put a piece of blue painters tape over the power and phase switches, this worked for me with that plate amp (which is WELL known to leak in that spot).

What i always do to seal up leaks is put tape or little balls of paper towels. In this case id put tape on the exterior of the phase switch. Its no big deal for me at least maybe because im ghetto 😂

For example, with a 15" or 18" high QTS driver, how to determine optimum size of h frame, optimum front and rear cavity depth, and some basic design principles will be great !!! Is it because the plastic box covering the amplifier is flexing like the speaker in a passive radiator kinda way.. Silicon a piece of MDF over the back of the plastic box to stop flexing.. Cheers 👍

I read some theory that sealed enclosures should have a small leak so internal and external pressures can equalise over time.

I've never heard of such things. Even if you make a perfectly air tight sealed box, the speaker itself has some amount of leakage (very low), but in time, I'm sure it solves the pressure equalization you mention. Obvious air leaks, like in this video, are bad because they are noisy.

Hello Sir. I tried to measure the ts paras as you explained. Problem is , I think Iam doing everything right, but during caliberation, the clipping error is showing up every time. Altering the input levels do no change. Could it be sound card issue, as mine is a cheaper chinese thing. Could not understand what the problem is.

Thanks for this tutorial video and the excel sheet ! Can you help me pls regarding the following issue? I was trying with data for a 4 inch 30 watt small sony full range speaker. The box volume was coming with a negative number ! Fs - 202 Hz Qts - 1.23 Vas - 0.78 Ok ... I got my answer from your another video👍 But what should be done for small speakers having Qts more than 1.2 ?

For High Qts drivers you can go for Infinite baffle, open baffle or large sealed enclosures.

@@sudiptasen6181 How large the box should be depends on the other speaker parameters. Having at least Fs, Qts and Vas is enough to determine the box size.

Yes, there are certain alignments for bass reflex boxes as well, one of which is the Butterworth response which has the maximally flat curve. Maybe for another video

First off, great video, this is super helpful! So I've got my driver and amp plate picked out and am now in the design process for the box, and one thing I'd really like to do instead of painting or veneering my box is do an epoxy resin pour design on the outside. I've watched some videos of people making countertops out of MDF then doing epoxy pours to mimic a marble finish and it comes out looking pretty incredible; I think that would look awesome as a speaker box design. The thing with epoxy is that it's much thicker, heavier, and denser than regular paint or veneer and I was wondering what effect that may have on the sound of the box? I'm guessing if dampening material mimics a larger box then so would an epoxy coat around the outside since it would be harder for sound to escape the box with that extra layer. Was wondering if you have any thoughts on what effects that may have or how I may need to adjust the design of the box to account for the extra thickness/density of the box? Btw going with a very similar driver, Dayton Audio RSS265HF-4 10" Reference HF. Slightly different amp as I'd like to be able to access a little more of the driver's capabilities without shelling out for Dayton's 500w; getting the Bash 300S Digital.

The layer of epoxy on the outside will do nothing for the internal volume. Placing dampening material inside the box, increases the perceived volume because the sound waves inside will behave differently. But dampening material has low density (if you squeeze it, you reduce it to something that barely occupies space), the physical internal volume is almost the same. So, for example if you put something solid inside, you decrease the internal volume. So, if you put epoxy on the exterior, you might increase the rigidity if the box and might not need bracing, but the internal volume (either physical or perceived) is the same.

It depends. It can be better, yes. But a speaker with Fs of 71 Hz doesn't sound like a subwoofer to me.

If you have 2 subwoofers you would use identical ones. One for left channel and one for right channel.

Felicitari pentru canal si site. Sunt pasionat de diy audio si am descoperit de curand canalul tau si siteul pe care l-am lecturat cu placere. Era interesant sa arati si niste masuratori ale raspunsului produsului final, anechoic si in camera, chiar si cu problema scurgerii de aer. Salutare! Furnirul l-am luat de pe Audio Alchemy acum ceva timp. E un site romanesc care arata cam invechit dar e de incredere. Se poate comanda pe mail. Furnirul este de palisandru si este cam scump. Am luat o data mai mult pentru niste boxe de podea si mi-a mai ramas. Este scump pentru ca este printe putinele esente care vine in latimi mari. Altfel, daca furnirul nu este cel putin la fel de lat ca panoul, trebuie imbinate mai multe bucati una langa alta. Sigur nu ma pricep sa fac asta si am preferat sa iau un furnir care sa necesite o singura bucata pentru fiecare parte a boxei. Pentru un subwoofer ca acesta, care nu e prea mare sigur gasesti si alte esente care sa fie la preturi decente si sa arate si bine.

Different boxes may increase the acoustical output, but the electrical power handling will remain the same (with a few niche exceptions).

Hi Sir. I have seen in some music systems that the port and subwoofer are positioned at right angle faces. Does this make any difference ? I mean the faces on which port and the sub are same or different ?

@@swarajbiswas3056 That kind of decision is made usually to be space efficient. Probably there isn't any room on the front baffle for both the speaker and port. Also the port might be too long to be placed on the back panel etc

Bass output is not measured in watts, its measured in decibels. Input power is measured in watts. If we measured output power in watts the numbers would be very small - for 40 watts of input you get about 0.4 watts of output. But also, the ear doesn't hear sound energy linearly, so we need a logarithmic metric to measure the output. Hence we use decibels. The efficiency of the system is what you want to look at. Typically 90 decibels for 1 watt at 1 metre. Yes, generally ported speakers are more efficient than sealed boxes in the bass frequencies - by about 3dB.

The amp does have the radiator fins to the exterior. So, there should be no problem with overheating.
