I was about to start High School in '65 when I was invited by my best friend's parents to go with them to their holiday shack about 40 kilometres eastward from the city, to spend the last two weeks of vacation. By then most of the holiday makers were already gone back to town and we were left with the whole beach to ourselves. They were the last sunny warm days of that Summer filled with great music, like Beatles, Stones and everything in between. We went to the movies twice the first two nights, had ice-cream seating on the rocks behind the clubhouse, and once tried to count all the stars looking down on us before heading back to the cabin. One night on our way home we met the two sisters staying on a chalet nearby about 100 metres from us. We had a time to remember with them for almost the two weeks we were there, and even now, fifty five years later so hard to forget. We spent everyday together and went everywhere...swimming at the beach every morning, the social nightly dances at the local sailing club in the evenings, the ice-cream parlour, and we even found time to watch another movie at the outdoor cinema by the clubhouse. But sadly we all left and went home the same day...That morning we spent some time together for about an hour, saying our teary goodbyes seating on the limestone wall with the white fence at the front of their chalet's garden. I remember that sad deafening silence wrapping itself around us whilst we were holding hands waiting for the last little sweet good-bye kiss in the cheek. Although we didn't live far away from each other in the city, just a bit over one hour by bus, we decided to stay in touch by writing a letter every week, and we both told and promised each other that they were going to be kissed before being dropped in the mail box, and to try to arrange to catch up again as often as we were allowed to. I still remember the very first thing I did when I got her first letter a week or so later, was to kiss the back flap of the envelope where she sealed it, and smell the drops of that sweet perfume she used and I did like so much. (Apple Blossom it was called) Our letters soon stopped when High School took over...we had made new friends, new study subjects had to be learned, and time couldn't wait and flew away from us. When we caught up again, many many years later, she was already engaged and introduced me to her fiance whom she married soon after. I always remember her and that Summer...and the inexplicable feeling in my chest when I received her first letter sealed with a kiss...( or so she told me...) And now this song brought it all back again...

We had no computers. We had no cell phones. There were only 3 or 4 channels on our black and white TV's. But we had THE MUSIC. Music that will still be played 500 years from now. Trust me...nobody will remember the songs of 2023.

In the late 80's Jason Donovan covered this song and it became such a hit again that every radio station played it! It became the hit of the summer! I remember relaxing by the lakeside, the sweet smell of suntan oil and cigarette smoke mingling in the air, and this song playing on the portable radio. We were innocent, we had the world to ourselves at the end of the best, last free decade in the world, the 80's. Young people will never understand what it was like to be free in the 80s! Not locked up in a world of phones, internet, computers. Young people today are just slaves.

I was 12 years old when i heard it on the car radio! Fell in love with this beautiful song then & now i play it often ! Such a beautiful song ! I’m 74 now & this song puts a smile on my face! ❤
