love it mark. at first I was wondering why she was standing back there like a statue, but once you explained the shadow it was really cool. Never seen shadows explained like that before, or in such a visual hands on manner really cool mark props for that one.

Hey Mark. I love your show. One thing I wanted to ask though. Please consider showing more failures. In this episode you put the reflector between the back light and the model so as not to light her. Please show us what happens when you don't do this. Also you mentioned setting the back light too bright. Show that please. At least for me seeing the failures helps as much as the success.

Hi Mark, just wanna clarify something regarding your ratio for your high key, you mention at 7:10 and 8:23 that it has to be 1 stop brighter for the back light. During your Episode 42 for high key and low key, you mention at 4:23 that the background should be 2 stops brighter. Have you change your lighting style for high key? Thanks

I hope you can answer my question as its been making me wonder for a long time. I have noticed that after living in Thailand for such a long time, that most studios here use paper rather than muslin or Vinyl. Paper seems more expensive, so why would studios opt for this choice for backgrounds? I have also noticed that the studios roll it out onto the floor which has caused it to tear and rip, surely this isn't good and ends up being more expensive.

@EyeCaptureImages That obviously was a creative decision. Mark wanted to create a particular mood and the shadows help to create that mood. In a standard portrait shot the shadows would be distracting. Not all shadows are bad :-).

@EyeCaptureImages On a solid background the shadows are too prominent and distracting, after all you're shooting on a seamless to focus all the attention on the model, not what's around or behind her. On the set with other background items the shadows add to the interest or ambience of the image around and behind the model.
