Sean Connery's Unique Look (Also TURTLENECKS)

Sir Sean Connery was noted in the Highland Dress community for doing a few slightly odd things with his outfits. To the world at large, he will always be remembered as James Bond and ‘Mr. Scotland’. However it seems he often was not very concerned about the details of his kilted attire.
Most of the “issues” come from small faux pas such as not repairing his dress sporran. But he also did things like wearing a turtleneck shirt or jumper with a semi-formal Argyll jacket or Prince Charlie. Was he some sort of trend-setter?

I have the same MacLean of Duart Hunting tartan kilt Sean wears in the photos you showed. I have also sometimes worn the red Dress version of this tartan in a neck tie along with the green hunting tartan. never worn cuffs etc though.

I have to agree that celebs can get away with wearing clothes in a "wrong" way more that we "plain" people can. I have learned a lot from you guys by watching your videos. I don't care to look like a soup sandwich...lol.

Sir I am going to Scotland for Hogmanay and wearing a Kilt for the first time. I have a tartan tie that means a lot to me but is not the same tartan as the Kilt. This was not available ( Long Story! ) Is it expectable to wear none matching items. Thank you for your help.

@@USAKiltsOfficial I thank you. Now, I will put you on the spot. I am looking for a kilt in an old MacDonald of Glencoe tartan. There are many tartans which claim to be such but this is what I am finding. "There is a separate tartan known as the MacDonald of Glencoe, it is very different from the MacIan or the Ardnamuchan. This is the proper tartan for Glencoe and was found on the bodies exhumed in the 1800s for burial in consecrated ground. This is an ancient tartan and predates the Highland Clearances". I cannot trace it. Can you?

Depending on wether ( I’m in Kentucky) I sport a Cornish Jumper over a collared shirt and tie ! Or tweed vest and coat ! ( there isn’t much of a evening culture here that dose no’s include a bond fire 😒)

I feel less weirded out by what Sean Connery is wearing than I do seeing guys in Jacobite shirts, glengarrys/balmorals, and tube socks. That (to me, personally) looks horrible.

A good rule of thumb is if you wouldn't wear it with a tuxedo don't wear it with evening wear.

Have to wonder, how many of us are going to formal events frequently. I haven’t worn a tuxedo since I graduated high school 50 years ago. So while I find the whole formal kilt attire thing interesting in an academic sense, I don’t find that it that helpful in terms of how to wear a kilt in a modern setting. I own several kilts, (some tartan, some utility), more often than not, they are worn with a t-shirt or a sweater. So Sir Sean’s example of a jacket and turtleneck with a kilt seems far more likely to be something I might imitate for a dressier look, than i am to wear a full formal PC and bow tie

If you don't wear formal wear you will not own a Prince Charlie. They did not say a jacket and turtleneck look bad. They said it does not go with a Prince Charlie.

@fredjones6338 Absolutely agree with you, although for me it's less than 50 years. But even so-called formal or semi-formal events like weddings don't seem that formal anymore. People showing up in jeans and such. Probably has to do with the general trend in the US toward casualness in general.

Zardoz is a perfectly fine movie...for open-minded cinephiles who enjoy something off the beaten path. The sheeple can and shall watch something else.
