Mystic River is a masterful portrait of fate and friendship across generations. Director Clint Eastwood draws brilliant performances from an outstanding ensemble cast in which Sean Penn's searing portrayal of a father in pain calls to mind a young Marlon Brando. The use of locations in working class Boston presents an authentic background for a story of people whose lives are woven together in a world that they cannot escape.

I think Sean Penn is brilliant as an actor. He completely deserves this and he deserved other awards as well that he did not get just because of his politics. Keep them separate. He has done many many great things for other people and has contributed his time to help others. Just because he's a perfectionist and tells it like it is and shows the truth does not make him a bad person. I'm glad that he's honest and has the beliefs and passion for other things and people.

Unfortunately I was biased against Sean for a long time, mostly because of his marriage to attention-seeker Madonna. Whenever paparazzi pounced, he would lash out. Not a good look. Apparently he ended serving a stint in jail due to bad behaviour and admitted later that he was drunk for most of the time he and Madonna were married. Opposites shouldn't marry. This is unquestionably the best performance ever given by Bill Murray. The word "perfect" is rarely used in association with the work of an actor, but it is deserved here. Murray is mainly serious, but he gets the opportunity to throw in little bits of comedy (improvised by him?) that are understated enough that they don't damage the flow. Best of all, as a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis, Murray never seems to force anything.

Lost in translation has been overhyped for good reasons and well deserved because it alludes more to the bleak reality of individuals as opposed to system of individuals which Mystic River alludes to. Yeah lost in translation addresses all the philosophical and contemplative points which are important, but Mystic river alludes more to the realities of now and the human condition. Lost in translation is more about navigating uncertainty, while mystic river is about dealing with misguided certainty.

@Izaan28103 жыл бұрын
Except for Adrien Brody, I disagree. Denzel won because of politics and black Oscar year considering Russell Crowe won all the other 4/5 major awards. Russell Crowe should have won for A Beautiful Mind. For the year Russell won for Gladiator, Christian Bale gave a far more memorable and exceptional performance than literally anyone that year in American Psycho. For the year Penn won, I don't know. I believe that Murray should have won.
@Izaan28103 жыл бұрын
@Victoria Okoshone That was a factor as well but in either case it was not a very well deserved Oscar honestly especially over Russell Crowe and Tom Wilkinson. True that Denzel got this one because he lost for both Malcolm X and Hurricane which should have been his wins but to think about it, Sydney Poitier got his honorary award that night. Halle Berry(great performance) won over Nicole Kidman(Moulin Rouge!) and Naomi Watts(Mulholland Drive) which were superior performances. Coincidence, I guess not.

Sean Penn is a great actor and he was fantastic in Mystic River, but this oscar was Bill Murray's....Bill's subtle performance in Lost in Translation was just something else.
@-Th7-11 жыл бұрын
Josef Hautala The deadpan expression, that's just Bill Murray's face. For a comedian like Bill, who's famous for his nonchalance and quick wit, this was a completely different, subtle performance from him. His expression in every scene, and the way he portrays a fading Hollywood star, who is obviously not to enthusiastic about doing a foreign commercial for some quick cash in the film, I felt it was Murray's best work.

Anchored by the exceptional acting of its strong cast, Mystic River is a somber drama that unfolds in layers and conveys the tragedy of its story with visceral power.

He is one of my all time favorite actors. As soon as I watched hos performance in this movie, almost 20 yrs ago, I knew he would be nominated for an Oscar. I am so glad he won another one for "Milk". I would love to see him win a 3rd in his career.

Denied twice (Dead Man Walking and I Am Sam) when he deserved the award the most, this must be his third supposedly! Sometimes, if not most of the time, in showbusiness a dirty politics play an important role!!! For me, this actor should had been recognized long ago and it is a shame for the academy to deny him the recognition due to him long ago....

Johnny depp created a character that is and will always be infamous. Mystic river wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t pirates and when it comes to characters captain Jack wins every time by a landslide. IMO this one should’ve gone to Johnny

Jimmy Markum... what a performance! This Oscar is one of the most deserved of the last years (although his second Oscar should have been Mickey Rourke's first one). "Is that my daughter in there", "I Can't Even Cry for Her" and "Admit What You Did" scenes are absolutely amazing. I also think Johnny Depp and Bill Murray were very good but Penn was outstanding and gave this performance, a performance for the ages.

+ysoof groof I think it's because the movie had 3 actors with such great acting that sometimes you forget. People talk about Mystic River, and then it leads to Penn coming up. So it's talked about. But I know what you mean. But I think it's because the strength of the cast. Any 3 of them could have been nominated but Penn had some brilliant scenes. Just unreal acting

Captain Spider-Man Bud it doesn't even compare to iconic roles such as Marlon Brando as Vito corleone, forest Whitaker as Idi min, al Pacino as Michael corleone and tony Montana or Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Those are iconic characters, Jack Sparrow is remembered as comic relief in an overkilled series of diminishing intelligence. Honestly Christian Bale in the machinist deserved that nomination over depp.
