In fact, I will just put it here in advance: You can look at it from multiple perspectives: e.g., 3 - 1 Alex; or you can look at it like fight one, kickboxing: extremely close/controversial; fight two, kickboxing: Izzy dominating, got caught; fight three, MMA: Izzy dominating, got caught; fight four, MMA: Alex getting the better of Izzy, got caught. The first of these perspectives is too broad to see the reality of the situation in all its granular detail; the second is more accurate, but still quite broad when compared to the reality of the situation. If we want to maximise our chances of being correct, we should base our views on the second perspective (if given a choice between the two). And on this view, it is far from obvious that Alex comes off looking like the better fighter--which I assume is the ultimate question we are trying to answer when we have these kinds of debates. - In terms of combat sports: the first fight is a wash; the second one suggests that Alex and Izzy are quite evenly matched, but that Alex can stop Izzy; the fourth fight suggests that Alex and Izzy are quite evenly matched, but that Izzy can stop Alex; the third fight suggests that Izzy is the better overall fighter technically, but that Alex can TKO Izzy. -- So, everything is the same between the two here--except that Alex has a TKO over Izzy whereas Izzy does not have one over Alex; and Izzy has dominated Alex over four rounds in striking and grappling whereas Alex has not done the same to Izzy. So, it seems like it is up to taste who comes off the better combat sports athlete. - In terms of MMA: Izzy dominated the first fight for, roughly, four rounds, but got caught and stopped by TKO; in the second fight Alex arguably won a round against Izzy, but then got caught and KOed, and then got his unconscious body hammer fisted into the Amazonian jungle where his ancestors live. -- So, it seems like Izzy comes off the better MMA fighter based off the MMA fights. *This is impressive as they have been kickboxing fights in the octagon, and Izzy has been training MMA for ten years while Alex has trained kickboxing for the better part of ten years--Alex really should have dominated both fights in theory, assuming equal talent/skill.* I have not gone into kickboxing; Alex comes off better in an analogous manner to Izzy in MMA. I understand that who Izzy and Alex fought outside of each other is important to these analyses, I am just trying to convey my view that just looking at the fights between the two, it is not clear that Alex is "ahead" in any meaningful way in MMA, or combat sports. And therefore, Izzy is not obliged to give Alex an immediate rematch like people seem to think. The above position in more detail: Izzy gave him a title shot before he really deserved it: Alex needs to pay his dues in MMA. *Alex might have a good chance of beating Izzy, but being the UFC champion is not about being able to beat one guy, it is about being good enough to get to fight that guy, and then beat him. You should not be UFC champion just because you can beat the champion, you should be UFC champion because you can get to the champion and beat him. Izzy did not get an immediate fight against Rob, he had to pay his dues. Alex should too.* [You may say, "hey everyone should fight everyone and whoever wins is the champion, none of this 'picking and choosing'". This is naive, picking and choosing happens--"Paul" from the pub cannot fight Izzy for the belt next month. And, therefore, because picking and choosing must happen (there are practical reasons why Paul cannot fight Izzy right away (bad fights, horrible scheduling, how would we decide the order of contenders?)), we should pick and choose based on some guiding principles. And I think the principle that the champion should be able to beat a good well-rounded MMA fighter in the top 5 is a good principle. Especially where the guy in question, Alex, has no meaningful lead in MMA, or combat sports even.]
