Speaking of the Great Lakes you should check out The Ward Line, it’s an often forgotten about stevedoring shanty originating from the upper Great Lakes region that was sung by (mostly black) sailors and land crews as they loaded and unloaded cargo and fuel in and out of the ship’s hold and also while doing routine labor at “sea”.

Another awesome shanty! Something I've been wondering--one of my favorite shanties from Assassins Creed Black Flag is The Derby Ram, but in looking at the history it seems it was only ever a folk song. Was it adapted to a shanty only for the soundtrack? It's the shanty I find myself singing the most, and the refrain comes in handy when my kids say something I disagree with (that's a lie, that's a lie, that's a lie, lie, lie) 😆

Wait, what? "Hauling up the booms"? (As in hauling up a yard, as in the topsail yard?) I've never heard of such a thing. How would that even work? And with block and tackle, why would it be beneficial of even possible? All you might need is a person standing on the gunwale adding to the downward haul, above the guy at the front of the halyard. The earliest couple sources for the song are sung by Black Americans in the military and rowing boats, and the style of song totally checks out with that repertoire. I'm afraid this is just some other legend replacing whatever one it's supposed to be correcting. In fact, it could very well refer to a hanging or a hangman (literally or metaphorically, as in the action of hauling), as there is no need to be talking about a vessel at all and these lyrical tropes simply transferred over with the songs from one context to the next. This sounds like a case of someone insisting that because they think of chanty only as a "SEA" thing, they tried to come up with some rationalized explanation of traditional phrase by scrounging around exclusively sailor-y ideas.
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're pretty upset about this. I'm sorry to have upset you.
@hultonclint3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDagher C'mon, man, don't be glib. You have a platform here, people are coming and following what you're putting out, taking it on as their education about chanties (like it or not). People have a right to see, in the comments, a voice saying that what has been said in the video makes no sense. The novice viewers aren't likely to discern the suspect details from the seemingly authoritative voice that is presenting to them. So if you're going to jump into this role of teaching history in addition to just being a musician, you'd better 1) bring some evidence to back it up OR 2) remove the authoritative voice and say you are not really sure what you're talking about -- "Here's a thing I heard, here's where I heard it for what it's worth, but I'm limited in assessing it" OR 3) if nothing else, ignore, don't mock, the comments from a person critiquing the information. I'm not "upset." I'm just engaging in discussion of the information being put out. You were standing against questionable ideas by saying so-and-so idea was incorrect. I'm doing the same, and I'm bringing extra knowledge and evidence to support that. Thanks.
@SeanDagher3 жыл бұрын
@@hultonclint I'm not trying to be glib, I'm just not sure I want to debate this in the comments. In my experience no good can come of that. I'm certainly not mocking anyone. If you've seen my record of engaging with people, I think it's obvious that I try really hard to be respectful, even when I disagree. I'm certainly not preventing anyone from seeing dissenting comments. I took exception to the tone of "Wait what?..." and I'm not interested in being mocked. I'm musician and I've made lots of errors about technical sailing stuff and I do my best to correct them. I'm sure you can tell that I'm not reading a script, but rather trying to effectively communicate the gist of the concepts. I'll make a note about this error as well. No problem. If people mistake me for an authority, then maybe it's because they're learning something general, and they can learn more about the details if they care to. I'm not standing against any ideas. In fact, your idea that the hanging is a non-factual riff on rowing ties in completely with the stuff I say all the time. I'm always saying that we don't know about stuff and that it's made up. I have no problem agreeing that even the stuff we think we know is made up. Your previous comment about the music "just being" black face minstrel songs seems like a simplistic reduction. For sure Black Americans music was the source of much of the shanty repertoire and many of the verses, but it's more than 'just' that. Write to me via Bandcamp if you want to discuss this more.
