I'll be honest.. stardew got kinda boring after about 150 hours. I'm waiting for 1.6 to drop on xbox bc I've literally achieved perfection in the most literal way, beyond what Qi tracks jn the walnut room. Done literally everything in 1.5 even the achievements from the cowboy game and the Donkey Kong 64 knockoff game I forget what they're called. . And I've even completed a second farm on the community center route to Qi's completion standard too. Glad for it really, made me have to actually revisit the skull cavern a million more times for the auto petters, I figured marnie or someone would sell them since joja is gone but meh.

About the whole "no tutorial" thing, the library books you dig up actually have a lot of tutorial type information, and you get advice from NPCs about things in the mail and in cut scenes, so there are definitely in game resources to help players out, you just have to find them organically through gameplay, and you kind of have to be lucky with what library books you will find at what time

I do get your point, the books actually help for people who are new, but whatever game you play there's a community that's willing to answer all your questions, even ones that involve spoilers

Here's the thing tho, the game doesn't even point you to the library if you need help. A simple "If you have any questions on what to do, go check out the library. I'm sure Gunther can give you a hand." would suffice as an in-game tutorial.

Somehow, when first started playing Stardew, I did not really know what the shipping bin was for. The first thing I put in there was garbage and it returned no money so I assumed it was to easily get rid of unwanted items. To get money, I would sell my produce to Pierre, my fish to Willy and my minerals to Clint. All the things I couldn't sell to them I would hoard away like Smaug from the Hobbit. I didn't learn what the shipping bin was for till I started a multiplayer farm and I saw my friend dropping turnips in the bin. I was really concerned she was getting rid of produce and not getting her money's worth. I told her this, worried, and she laughed hysterically and finally explained the shipping bin to me. At this point I was almost year two on my solo farm. The amount of time I wasted visiting the shops to sell items...

I figured out what the shipping bin did (though I didn't get you could only retrieve the last item in it for a while) but I somehow convinced myself that shipping bin items sold for less than the item would have at Pierre's or Willy's or whatever made sense for the item. Essentially that you would get a bonus for running all the way down to the store and talking to the npc's. I did the same thing until nearly year 2 until I wrote down a few sell prices and realized they were the same

@@frankisnot1148 yeah fr like when I see a game that piques my interest I spend literal hours researching on it, sometimes I’ll watch let’s plays of the first half hour or so, not enough for spoilers but just enough to see the gameplay and how it works. So complaints like this baffle me. Like I get that sometimes games are worse than as shown in the promotional material and stuff like that so it’s fair to leave a negative review if you truly didn’t enjoy it but the reviews where they complain about the essence of the game are just weird. Like you bought a farming game, why are you mad that it’s…a relaxing farming game???

Some of those reviews are fair, though. The one that played for 50+ hours and then stated that they realized it was objectively a good game, but not for someone who both a) can't handle the stress of the game having a million objectives to complete and b) also can't let go of the internal compulsion to optimize them is a totally fair review. SDV is a great game both for people who love to try to optimize the time management challenges AND for the people who are capable of ignoring the objectives completely and just playing their "own" game in a relaxed way. But what if you're that person who can't do the latter and just finds the game makes them anxious? Might indeed take you tens of hours to realize you just can't really enjoy the game even if you try, and it's a fair review to warn other people who might be similar. Too bad it's gonna be buried under lots of "can't date the moms" reviews.

I’m always perplexed by reviews that complain about lack of tutorials. SDV mechanics aren’t that complicated and you get basic “how to do things” prompts several times. When I’m on the Wiki or looking up YT vids, I’m looking for optimization ideas or references so I don’t have to write the info out myself. How to do things is fairly straightforward, I think.

To be fair, Stardew Valley can be a little too... secretive about its mechanics. There's a reason why people look up favorite items of every npc on their first playthrough. Wouldn't it be better if you could learn all this by just playing? Sure, you can do it already by trying out every option, but it would feel more organic, if npcs could simply drop this information in conversations.

See, I used to dislike Stardew, but literally only for the reason that the graphics are hard on my eyes and the large amount of brown/orange tones makes me have strong negative reactions. I'm autistic and have sensory issues and am especially sensitive to orange/brown tones (I dislike fall in Animal Crossing for the same reason) and it can cause me strong reactions. Kept me from getting the game for so long. I finally got it after two KZbinrs I liked really got me into it and it's much easier to process on my switch than on my phone and looking at pictures of it. Sometimes I have a hard time with it, but I can either adjust the brightness enough or I can just not play that day. Yet even if I adjusted the brightness on my phone, it still left me feeling sick. But either way, I'm glad I got into it. I didn't even hate the game, but graphics that affect my sensory issues are a big part of gaming for me due to it. It's why I steered away from normal Monster Hunter and other "realistic" graphic games that are more about grind and all. It's hard for my eyes. But that's just my disability so no real hatred for the game. And now I'm married to Elliott and living a happy life on Stardew and currently have 202 hours on my main farm and 320 hours in total. Fair if it isn't for everyone. Also that "Zerango (A Mega-Chad Gaming Boss)" review absolutely killed me 😂 some reviews are fair, but some of these are omg- I can't take it /lh

Something that could possibly help if you ever decide to play on pc you can download a recolour which makes everything darker and or less orange. It’ll still be difficult in the fall but it could possibly be a good option for you if you ever choose to

If you get the game on Steam, there are recolor mods like the Starblue Valley mod that might be better for you. I'd recommend trying a few of them out of you can.

There's a really good mod that makes everything flowery... Changes lots of the game colors. There are others. Check Nexus mods 😊 My sons have autism, they're the best boys ever.

I like the middle ground, I think. The start (like, maybe after 2-3 harvests), is stressful and I feel obligated to grow way too much and spend way too long of every single day all season watering it to make money. So I like it more once I have enough money and resources to have a decent sized farm most fitted with sprinklers so I can have time to do other things and still have that income. In turms of social system, so far I feel like My Time At Portia's social system should be used as an example It has a system that looks simmelar to what stardew valley has (surtain amount of "hearts" discovering favorite gifts, stuff like that) , but the key difference is that there are much more stuff going on with that: you can play with citisens, spar with them, hangout/have dates with them to increase friendship + there are random quests that you can get from citisens after reachin surtain levels of friendship and those can earn you friendship points too Not bringing up the fact that there are several batchlores that will propose to you themself AND there is at least one character that will ask you to date him himsel (not sure about batchlorettes tbh, because I instantly fell for Gust and never looked others up) also there is a character that gives you most relationship points for TALKING, playing and hanring out with her, so throughing gifts her way won't work + there is this whole system where if you increase relationship withone character, every next "heart" you will gane small amount of friendship points with those who are close to them My time at portia is overall is a v good game, if you got interested you should check it out

Especially moving into town and immediately fighting everyone I saw was the funniest shit ever I love the addition of NPCs having relationships with each other, and getting close to one of them means gaining friendship with their whole group, that was really great

In terms of friendship I give myself a rule that I’m not allowed to grind for gifts for people, it has to be stuff I just have. And I try not to gift super frequently. It gives me incentives to talk and do quests, because I start to be like “I’ve given this person two gifts last week, this week I’m just gonna talk and do a quest if something comes up.” I also play modded and I use part of the community so I definitely speed up the process with that and it feels more natural

I think the people saying the game rushes them don't realize you don't need to finish things *immediately*. It feels like they think that because there's a counter for a task, they need to finish it as quickly as possible. But like... you don't even need to finish the main story for many in game years if you don't want to. You can complete the community center in year 10 if you want to. I usually only finish in year 4 because I like to take the game slow. There's no deadline for anything aside from special orders and board quests, and even then... they'll show up later if you don't finish them. There's no punishment for going at your own pace. I love that about Stardew.

The multiplayer disconnection thing is v real. It's sporadic for my friends and I, sometimes it's smooth and sometimes we have to stop playing because it starts kicking them out and escalates to kicking them out every 5 minutes or so. I love stardew but the multiplayer issue pisses me off so much and many people seem to have the issue. (I have 800hrs on record on steam, probably like ~40 on mobile android doesn't track it idk)

I know the feeling of the one review at 7:25 if you came from harvest moon 1-3, 64, mineral town, etc and you tried to play stardrew with that nostalgia in mind. you will not feel the game you will be extremely overwhelmed. it took me 4 attempt and on different time and year to finally appreciate stardew. it truly is a love letter to HM and creates more depth to it. my time at portia on the other hand is a 3d rpg version of stardew or in a long stretch much complex Rune factory

I completely agree! Tutorials can get so annoying, especially when you just want to jump into the game. I also like to think of the stardew wiki as an encyclopaedia or as the farmer doing research. If you wanted to try something new on a farm in real life, you’d definitely want to research what you need to get there first!

I actually kind of like that you have to learn the mechanics of the game organically. I spent my first 5 or so in-game years without realizing there was a wiki, and I was always delighted to make a new discovery. To this day, I get excited when I see something new in the game after all this time. However, when I did discover the wiki and all the KZbin content around the game, it did help me to get unstuck in several areas and progress a lot faster.

I do agree with the sentiment of the game being too fast. My Time at Portia, although not perfect, does have the advantage of being able to set how long a day is. Even in Harvest Moon I felt incredibly rushed and it stressed me out a lot, so the option to slow time a little would be nice

I had the phase where I felt a little pressured to somehow have perfection by the first season of year 2. Then I let go of that thought and just enjoyed playing at my own pace. This farm was my first one, and it took me nearly year 5 to get the perfection. It was a great time ad experience, I didn't really read anything or watch something directly related to how to get perfection because I wanted to experience it as how it was made, slowly. I got to agree that the game isn't for everyone and that's okay!

tbh I think the people posting about how the game is too busy or tedious have never played a farm sim/harvest moon-like before, bc theyre ALL like that. those are genre conventions. they probably heard Stardew Valley bc it was popular and went to go play it but the genre just wasn't for them.
