6) Eagles - One Of These Nights My favorite Eagles album, One Of These Nights may be a more important turning point in the band's career than any of their other albums, including Hotel California. It was the album that launched them to superstar status, being their first #1 album, was their first to officially feature three guitarists, and spawned a few songs that would define the decade. One Of These Nights pretty effectively bridged the gap between the Eagles first three, mostly Country Rock albums and their last two mostly AOR Guitar Rock with Country leanings style albums. The band definitely showed a tendency towards the more AOR sound they were soon to develop, but the record also contains the Country Rock ballads they were famous for, including the incredible "Lyin' Eyes", the gorgeous "Hollywood Waltz", and the anthemic "Take It To The Limit", featuring a transcendent vocal performance by Randy Meisner. Then there's the witchy title track, and the sad and stark "After The Thrill Is Gone". However, the highlight may be the epic nearly Prog instrumental "Journey Of The Sorcerer", which is mind-blowing. One Of These Nights is one of the best albums of the '70s. Commercially and artistically, the Eagles would never look back. The record remains essential not only to their catalog, but to the decade as well. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights

Day 6: "Zuma" was released by Neil Young on the Reprise Records label in Nov. of '75. Collaborating with Crazy Horse again. Young's bluesy compositions like "Danger Bird" and Pardon My Heart" express his inner turmoil over his recent break up with actress Carrie Snodgrass. Bob Dylan famously visited the "Zuma" sessions and even played with the band for a bit. But it was "Cortez the Killer" from this LP release that would become a staple for his and Crazy Horse's live performances.

My favorite albums turning 50 In no particular order Day 6: ELO - Face the Music Face the Music is Electric Light Orchestra’s fifth studio album. My choice today, day 6 is the fifth studio album by UK rockers, FOGHAT, FOOL FOR THE CITY. I believe this is the band's most commercially successful studio album as a platinum +seller. It is also arguably the studio record that comes closest to capturing the energy and ferocity of the group's live performances. It also contains Foghat's signature song, the slow grinding hard rocking Slow Ride. The title track, Save Your Loving (For Me) and Drive Me Home are also great blues tinged boogiesque hard rockers built around pulsating riffs whilst there's a couple of covers, My Babe, which follows a similar hard rocking path and Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues, with Rod 'The Bottle' Price excelling, as he does throughout the album. Take It Or Leave It closes the album in mellower, richly melodic style. A real studio based highpoint in Foghat's career.

Morning/Afternoon/Evening everybody... On to #26 on my list today and we're off to The Emerald Isle, home of many of the finer things in life (Guinness, Caffreys, Bushmills, Writers Tears as well as, possibly, non-alcoholic beverages too...) as well as to some "craic"-ing* music... Before my choice today left us back in 1995 aged just 47, he left behind a cracking legacy, although more would surely have followed. I count myself lucky to have seen him play live, albeit just once, not that long before he passed. He's often called "the greatest guitarist you've never heard of" (although I know lots of us at SoT have!), and once, when Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, his reply was, "I don't know, why don't you ask...?" RORY GALLAGHER "Against The Grain" After starting out in TASTE in the late 60s, Rory went solo in the 70s abd, although he really came to life on stage, he produced some great studio stuff too. On this album, alongside bassist Gerry McAvoy, keyboard player Lou Martin and wonderfully named drummer Rod de'Ath, Rory rips his way through ten tracks, mostly originals, highlights including opener Let Me In, my favourite Souped Up Ford and Rory's version of Out On The Western Plain by Leadbelly. If you've never explored Rory's output, then this is as good a place to start as any... * craic [Pronounced "crack"] = Irish Gaelic for having a good time

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is the self-titled debut from AMBROSIA. They're a Californian band with a West Coast meets art rock style. Hints of CSN, 10cc, maybe early Yes (I think Chris North's keyboard playing sounds a bit like Tony Kaye's). Little known in the UK, but spawned the US hit Holdin' On To Yesterday. Other favourites here are Nice, Nice, Very Nice, and the proggy Drink Of Water. Your pick Katy Lied is coincidental that it was featured in the HBO show 'Yacht Rock, a DOCKumentary' that I watched a couple of days ago. Ambrosia's guitarist/singer David Pack took part in this show; strangely (!), Donald Fagan didn't. No comment.

Day 6. Tomorrow Belongs To Me - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. The NME 's review of this compared Harvey to Frank Zappa. Great, memorable songs played by Alex and his excellent band. Action Strasse is the hard rocking opener and going on to include such SAHB greats as Soul In Chains, Give My Compliments To The Chef, Snake Bite, Shark's Teeth, Ribs And Balls and the 7 minute The Tale Of The Giant Stone Eater. SAHB are a bit of a forgotten name now, but they put out some excellent albums and were a brilliant live act.

#26 Nazareth - Hair of the Dog I hadn’t listened to this all the way through in a long time…if ever…and I was stunned by the quality hard rock on this record. It is a combo of Led Zeppelin and maybe Aerosmith with a lead vocalist in Dan McCafferty who is the ultimate shouter singer in the Bon Scott or Axl Rose mold. The album was produced by the lead guitarist Manny Charlton…and boy does he have the hard rock/heavy metal chops ! The songs are uniformly heavy. Even the massive hit “Love Hurts” is sort of heavier than I remember. How tough is the opening track “Hair of the Dog” with the iconic line “Now you’re messing with, a son of a bitch” repeated over and over. Great song! Other highlights for me are “Miss Misery” with a riff which could play on a Black Sabbath tune. “Changing Times” is a good rocker in the “Black Dog” from the Zeppelin mold. “Beggars Day” written by Nils Lofgren is a Crazy Horse cover; followed by an excellent instrumental in “Rose in the Heather”. The record is closed by the 9:46 epic track “Please Don’t Judas Me” with some excellent guitar soloing. This is a majestic hard rock album that I intend to listen to much more often in the future.

#26- Steve Hackett- Voyage of the Acolyte. There is some phenomenal music on Steve Hackett's debut LP. I think what holds me back from saying it's my favorite Hackett album is some of the keyboard/synth playing, which doesn't rival Tony Banks' aesthetic or technical capabilities, and which I found at several points of the album to be cumbersome and a bit of a distraction from enjoying the music. Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Great SoT selection and more on that later. Personal pick today? Time for some southern rock today with the eponymous debut album in July 1975 on the Arista label from Tampa in the home state of Florida, the Outlaws [formerly known as The Four Letter Words]. The band gave a bit of change to southern rock by adding a mix of country and rock elements - particularly the vocal harmonies - to the usual twin lead guitar approach. This album includes two of the best known songs - the album opener of There Goes Another Love Song and the long-playing album closer of Green Grass And High Tides. Though personnel have rotated in and out over the years, the line-up on this debut was Hughie Thomasson on lead guitar & vocals; Billy Jones on lead guitar & vocals; Monte Yoho pm drums; Frank O'Keefe on bass guitar; and Henry Paul on electric and acoustic guitar and vocals. Down here in this section of Florida, this was pretty much the album heard in the summer and fall of that year and the winter into 1976. They played local concerts in the hometown in the spring of '74 [with Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers sitting in] and in January 1976 with the second concert being free. A highly recommended album for any lover or investigator of southern rock. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your next selection.

Elton John-Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy. A concept album about the early years of Captain Fantastic(Elton John) and the Brown Dirt Cowboy(Bernie Taupin) up to the release of Your Song. A sequel called The Captain And The Kid(released in 2005) picks up the story. This was produced by Gus Dudgeon. It was recorded at Caribou Ranch in Colorado. It features Elton and his band(guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, drummer Nigel Olsen, and percussionist Ray Cooper). Davey, Nigel, and Dee also contribute backing vocals. Dave Hentschel plays some synth on the last two songs, and Gene Page does the orchestral arrangements. The title track is a breezy Pop number with Elton on electic piano. Bitter Fingers is a rocker. That talks about Elton and Bernie working for music publisher Dick James. Tell Me When The Whistle Blows is funky with a clavinet and orchestra. Someone Saved My Life Tonight is about U.K singer Long John Baldry comforting Elton after Elton tired to commit suicide. Baldry is "Sugar Bear". Meat Ticket is another rocker, but it's funky. Better Off Dead calls to mind Queen(both Queen and Elton were managed by John Reid at the time). Writing is more breezy Pop with Elton on piano. We All Fall In Love Sometimes goes right into Curtains for a proggy piece. The former has 'flute' Mellotron by Elton, and the latter has 'choir' Mellotron. Both songs have Elton playing harpsichord.

26. Fela Ransome Kuti & Africa 70 - Expensive Shit Between 1971 and 1979, everything Fela Kuti released was great. The fact that Zombie (1977) was the go-to album for critics, until it wasn't and Expensive Shit became the top choice, illustrates how completely arbitrary it is. The king of Afrobeat released six albums in 1975 alone, and all of them are worth hearing -- they're all available on Bandcamp now. Probably the differentiating factor is simply the stories behind the albums. Some are tragic and dramatic, others are somehwat lighter, like this one, where Kuti was arrested on drug possession, but he ate the weed that was on him. He paid another prisoner to swap his poo for his when they tested it for the illicit substance, hence the album title. And yet, had he not succeeded, he may well have died in prison. Such was the chaotic and rebellious life of Fela. Afrobeat, Jazz-Funk | RYM #4 | Acclaimed #56 27. Heart - Dreamboat Annie 28. Good Rats - Ratcity in Blue 29. Angel - Angel 30.
