Loved this episode, guys - I typically may not be in agreement because you’re so much more into heavy metal and punk than I am, but PETE!! That number 1 pick made me gasp, as I absolutely love that album myself. Thanks guys for all the recommendations and comments, you always talk about groups and albums that I may have missed in my 60 years, so I always make a point of checking out most of those picks I’m not so familiar with. Many people out are searching for great music from new bands but there’s tons of great music under our noses that we’ve just never noticed before. Look back, dig deep and you’ll find it in abundance!

I still remember Al Stewart around Year of the Cat, and perhaps better, Time Passages, as one of the best all round concerts I have ever seen, though not exactly hard rock. At that time 10cc and Renaisance were amongst the best live bands. That is hard to explain to some, but their presentation was up there with Genesis, Camel and Wishbone Ash and their musicianship second to none.

You always remember your first records you bought as a child when you had the money or in my case went to the "Record Town Store" that I later worked at when I was 18 ish/ 19 ish as a youngster. My first BUY was Scorpions Blackout. I liked it but it was my next BUY that really impressed me to listen over and over again. That was Queen' Greatest Hits that they put together sometime in the early 1980's . I listened to that record to death and then started my collection at the time. I would have been around 7 years old when I bought that first Scorpions Blackout CD. CD's were new at the time. The same day my DAD bought a limited first or second generation Beatles Library. At the time If my memory serves me correct was like $200/300 bucks for all of the Studio Vinyl's. I will never forget that day. Shortly after I bought the Queen Greatest hits on CD. I loved all of the tracks. I think it was believe it or not the Flash sound track that made me think that this Band was completely different than all of the rest. The other stuff did it too but it was the Sci Fi with movies and music combination that got me really started back when I was about 8 years old. I knew every track on every album of Queen. Of course I branched off and found the Zep catalogue, Priest, Styx, Boston, all of the great 70's trying to catch up to what I had missed. All amazing. I had lots of great times with Yes, Aerosmith, The Grunge era, Motley Crue early era especially. I bought everything that I could afford. Music buying was my hobby along with baseball cards. Loads of fun. We are all waiting for that next big blossom and fruit of a change. I think if we can fix Big Big Executives that are getting older and more corrupt at the top then we have a Real chance at the next big thing. There are so much talent that we have not heard about out there. Sign bands and give them a chance already. Let the fans Decide. Love your channel. Especially love what Martin and Pete knowledge . You guys are a decade ahead of me. I was born in 1975. I love it guys. Keep it coming. Awesome!

A few faves of mine. Either of the first 2 Skids records, no filler, all great tunes. The debut Danger Danger release. Yeah, if you're a sucker for the 80's glam/sleaze sound, this is something you need to own. I wore out this CD and every time I hear a tune from it, I almost need to listen to it again. And usually more than once. The debut from Fifth Angel. Holy cow, this is so great, imo. Again, another that I played ad infinitum/nauseum and can still listen to till this day start to finish without skipping. The Vain debut. Again, glam/sleaze but top to bottom, you'll never skip a track. Lastly, the solo effort from Don Dokken. Jesus, it's a masterpiece. I'm looking at what I am about to post and if you asked me to pick one of these to take to a desert island I wouldn't pick any of them. Because that would be Powerslave. Not because it's perfect, but because it has the perfect song. But if you held a gun to my head as which is more perfect than the others? Pull the trigger because they're all magical. OK, I think I'd prefer to stay on the right side of the dirt and ima go with Don Dokken which is so counterintuitive since I don't think I've seen or spent any more time with bands than Skid Row. That's how strongly I feel about this record. I know I have others but these were just off the top of my head. Maybe they'll make Act III...

Great discussion! I don’t mind “good,” either, Martin! Probably a lot of choices possible here, but one that comes to mind is Bruce Dickinson, “The Chemical Wedding.” I never skip a track, and it seems perfectly paced. It has a great and carefully-crafted emotional trajectory.

Thanks. very interesting choices. I saw Supertramp here in sweden 1975 and they played most of the crime songs. Totally amazing! actually one of my first big concerts experiences. I agree on the Clash....a bit of nostalgia...that was my first Clash record. Ijust love Safe European home. I haven´t been a big Queen fan but I will give them a serious go. and also Aerosmith and Kansas. I also saw Black Sabbath here in Sweden 1976 and AC/DC did the warm up!! Back in those days they played very loud. AC/DC was heavy but when it was time for Sabbath it was almost unbarable. But it was an amazing consert. Thanks once more for some inspiration to look for (new) old records.

Agree so much re: Aerosmith's unmatched string of 70s ballads ("Dream On", "Season of Wither", "You See Me Cryin", "Home Tonight", "MIA"). The fact that they felt they needed a song doctor in the 80s, only to produce such a middling result as "Angel" is incomprehensible. And Rocks is the best because it's a treasure trove of fan favorites, there are no songs you're sick of hearing, and it's just oozing with all the narcotic intangibles of swaggering 70s rock excess. (Plus, it's the ONLY Aerosmith album where they tuned down their guitars!)

Great to hear The Chameleons mentioned by Martin. One of the very finest eighties bands from the UK. Strange Times is a fine album, but falls short of their previous two which you should really give a listen to. Namely 1983's Script of The Bridge, and 1985's What Does Anything Mean, Basically? Give them an ear, you won't regret it.
@SiLatics56
@SiLatics56 3 жыл бұрын
Gotta admit, loving the diversity of Martin's musical taste. Was totally not expecting mentions of The Clash, Manic Street Preachers and absolutely not The Chameleons [anyone watching should check out many of their songs at least. Swamp Thing and Up The Down Escalator spring to mind]. Here is mine off the top of my head: Probably not gonna go down well with the general demographic of the people who watch this channel but my list is as follows: Nick Drake - Pink Moon. Acoustic folk guitaring at it's finest. The poor, troubled young lad was a genius. Check out the song Northern Sky for a start [not on this album but still] REM - Green/Document/Automatic For The People U2 - The Joshua Tree/Achtung Baby Mansun - Six. Another band who got put in the Britpop category when they were more like prog combined with certain 80's new wave bands, and some heavy rock stuff in a similar vein to Manic Street Preachers. NEO-prog they were labelled by some critics and Six is an album I recommend to all. Cancer is an amazing musical journey and loads of songs on it are 'progressive.' The album contains Opera/classical samples, spoken word samples from the likes of Tom Baker, piano breaks, etc. all combined with crazy drumming and often heavy guitars with some nice solos, without being overly melodramatic. Awesome. Might take a bit of time for people to fully appreciate it though. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible. Not an easy listen but lyrically you won't find better from anyone really. Way underrated rhythm section but mainly the great guitar work from lead singer James Dean Bradfield. Richey Edwards the main lyricist before his disappearance soon after this album. Enya - A Day Without Rain. Wonderful production, as is the case with most of her albums. Beautiful, relaxing, ethereal music. Probably not gonna do down well with many on here but there you go. Heavy or soft, doesn't matter to me, brilliant melody is brilliant melody. The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow. Not a studio album as such with different versions of songs plus B-sides, etc. but works brilliantly as a whole. Faith No More - Angel Dust. Mike Patton is a crazy genius. Glad he moved away from his 'metal' style whiny, nasal vocals heard on the previous album, The Real Thing. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. I'm no Maiden officianado but many years ago I owned a lot of Iron Maiden albums and this always stands out as the best. Love the synth sounds combined with the usual Maiden sound. Quite proggy also, especially the title track. A few years ago I would have picked London Calling. Played it to death though and I think my love for The Clash has dropped a bit over the years. For me, Aqualung by Jethro Tull was a great album, but not quite perfect. The production for me seemed a little too stuck in the time of when it was released. The sound could have been brought forward much more to make the killer riffs sound that bit more powerful. All too 'low' and distant sound quality to me. A few years ago I would have picked a few more Iron Maiden albums probably.
