@@anthonynewcome128 Load and Reload were both suppose to be released together in one album, but the label didn't allow it. It took me 20 years to like Metallica again, but the problem with Metallica is they've lost the ability to self edit themselves. It seems like every idea they have ends up on an album. That's the issue with Hardwired. If they kept that album down to the top 8 songs it would have been really good, but they didn't know when to discard their more mediocre moments and it all ended up on the album and it weakened it.

With Dream Theater "The Astonishing", those who hate it seem to hold the majority opinion. But I quite like it. Pettrucci and Rudess set out to make what is basically a piece of modern musical theater. It follows the same two act structure as "Phantom of the Opera", Jesus Christ Superstar", & "Les Miserables" - shows that Pettrucci has admitted were influences on "The Astonishing". The original plan, as Pettrucci told Prog magazine, was to present it like a theater piece with guest singers in costume playing the different roles (Which would make it much more like one of Ayreon or Clive Nolan's recent stage productions), plus set pieces/scenery on stage. There was also to be no encores. The whole of "Astonishing" was to be performed and nothing else, just as you would see in the musicals already mentioned. In "Phantom of the Opera" they do not finish the show and then come back for a few more songs from other, unrelated shows. And the audience was to receive handbills/programs as they would at a theater show. It would be a whole musical theater experience. This approach was abandoned/toned down to make it more like a Dream Theater album and concert, with Labrie singing all the character vocals and video screens replacing the physical set pieces. Many complain about the length, and this is understandable But 2 hrs. 15 mins. is actually pretty in keeping of the average length of a 2 act musical. "Les Miserables" is actually much longer at 2 hrs. 45 mins. There was also originally talk of it being made into a movie - perhaps a bit of grandiose thinking on Petrucci's part. But in the end what you got was a mishmash of the original full-blown musical theater concept and the flashy rock concert concept. I think if the album had been released with the name Dream Theater on the cover, and it had been titled something like "The Astonishing - A Musical by John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess" is might have been received in a totally different way. People that hate musicals would have been turned off no doubt, but many DT fans might have loved it as a one-off project that presented itself as a legitimate piece of musical theater instead of a slower-paced DT concert. I think that the piece as it was ultimately presented was just too much to hold the attention of a rock/metal audience who would have rather had a more traditional DT concert. I do think there is some great music in there for those who can deal with the lengthy running time

Iron Maiden -- Virtual XI As much shit as the 2 Blaze albums get, "The X Factor" was not bad; Sign of the Cross, Lord of the Flies, Man on the Edge, Look For the Truth, Judgment of Heaven, The Unbeliever are all really strong tunes, plus the production on the album is not bad. I always thought that if Bruce Dickinson had sung on the album, it could have easily surpassed No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark (which, once you take out Be Quick or Be Dead, Afraid to Shoot Strangers and the title track, could easily be considered a stinker) in the Janick Gers era. Virtual XI on the other hand... good Lord, that album is just putrid. Futureal rocks to open, The Clansman is a classic befitting any Maiden era, but the rest of the album is just garbage, pure filler devoid of any of the catchiness and hooks from previous Maiden albums. Every once in awhile I have an opinion which is such an outlier from everyone else it amazes me. That said, I am one of the few who actually thought Music From the Elder (Kiss) is one of their best albums. The reason is not because it's not goofy (it is), or a concept which looked like a movie soundtrack but had none (it did). Rather, it 1. set some ambitious goals different from their normal albums and 2. musically met them quite well with better thought out lyrics and instrumentation than they typically put effort into. I credit Bob Ezrin for this. It flopped because the typical Kiss fan (the ones who remained after many bailed from their disco turn in Dynasty) wanted the usual thoughtless recycled stuff. I get that because I like their rock out tunes, but also appreciate something different with this one. I continue to enjoy many tunes on the album.
@markc5771 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it was a good album, I agree. The problem with Kiss is there is a sort of "live by the sword and die by the sword" thing going on. In other words, Kiss is a brand. The brand is being sold as four guys in futuristic costumes playing goofy rock music. You cannot take a brand of "guys in costumes playing goofy music" and then put it on the shelf where "progressive rockers" are supposed to be. The two do not go together. One will have to give way to the other... King Crimson and Yes are not giving way to "four guys in costumes playing goofy music"

I was shocked when Evergrey suddenly was mentioned since most people who know the other bands you mentioned typically never heard of Evergrey. Andy LaRoque produced the other ones before it). I still think its a great album in its own right but it did grow on me overtime. I felt songs like "I Should", "Still in the Water", "The Dark I Walk You Through", "Till Dagmar", "I Should", "Obedience", etc are classics. It was a way for Atlantic to make some more money from the band. They dug up some old tracks that didn't appear on any of their studio albums. Put them together and make a few bucks. The band disbanded a couple years earlier and I knew it wasn't a studio album but a few songs weren't bad. Coda was just a compilation album that came out after they were done.

@@villain68.. You are a Zeppelin fan who knows the story. Jimmy Page HAD to put it out due to contractual obligations. They owed Atlantic an album. It sold 2 million copies at that time.

My brother also dislikes Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" as well and he's a huge Pink Floyd fan, I do like the song "Not Now John" though despite it not being one of PF's best efforts, I thought "Never Say Die" was an okay album by Black Sabbath but their glory days of the original lineup was behind them.

I got mixed thoughts about The Final Cut, actually.

Had no use for Mindcrime II when it came out. Went back to it a couple of years ago and really like most of it. A few songs drag and I don't like how the album closes, but it's actually one of their more progressive albums in some ways. And that duet with Dio is worth the price of admission alone. Also, if you come in with the right mindset, Giant for a Day has a number of really good tunes (guilty pleasure?). IMO.

TE is solid if you approach it as a more mainstream 70's hard rock album instead of expecting it to be the sort of heavy and doom-laden record that the band typically put out in the early 70's.

Gary Moore... "After Hours". I was blown away by Still Got The Blues, but it's sequel lacked the spontaneity, verve, enthusiasm & grit of it's predecessor.

I do like final cut but One of my main fascinations with Floyd is their WWII related content so it’s sortof a given. Many of the songs originally were intended for the wall but members other than Roger thought it to be too personal, likely a correct assessment. You definitely hit it by saying the moodiness is the appeal though haha.

Tool is boring I never understood the hype for them I'm just not into tool I do like Progressive Metal when it's mixed with Thrash Metal and Death Metal because it makes it fun alone Prog is hard to get into for beginners. I'm into Thrash Metal and Death Metal but Death mixes Prog well with Death Metal spiritual healing is my favorite Death album.

@SydBarrettArchives3 жыл бұрын
It's more of a Floyd album than Momentary or Division Bell is, at least Waters wrote the songs and lyrics, can't say the same about the other 2 albums. Also, by even your idea, it would be his 2nd (Music from the Body 1970).

@@SydBarrettArchives Since we're splitting hairs here, Music from the Body was a soundtrack collaboration with Ron Geesin. Further, Gilmour, Wright, and Mason were session musicians on it. Consider it a solo album if you like.

I’ve always wondered if when some bands are in the studio is there someone like an engineer that is thinking this is “this is gonna be the St Anger for these guys and no one is telling them”
