Great show as always Pete and Chris. You never fail to come up with new tidbits that even I wasn't aware of. I was shocked to hear the consideration of Coverdale and Jon Olivia as singers of the band. That blew the top of my head clear off. Imagine the firepower that could've been unleashed but that would also mean missing the epic classics yet to come for Coverdale and Olivia. I was at the Seventh Star Tour in '86. Having the olds I remember sporadic things so reached in the tour vault for dates and locations. I was at the Detroit Cobo Arena portion of the tour. That was March 22, 1986. I was in college then. My jaw dropped discovering that Hughes first night with the band was the previous night in Cleveland's Public Hall so I was at night #2 of the Hughes schedule. WASP was the back up band. Last Command Tour for them I believe. They had paper-mache headless heads of band members impaled on poles (Barber Poles. Mind is sketchy on that) much like Vlad the Impaler style. Chris Holmes was wearing a Detroit Lions helmet in parts of the set. Hughes was in and out with his lyrics. Often lost in voice as the band played on. You noticed the botch on the Seventh Star material and I vividly remember a frozen Hughes voiceless during various parts of War Pigs. I still had a good time even though the audience was clearly shocked and not as energetic as it should've been. I wish Sabbath came to a working partnership with Ray Gillen. He had the 'it factor' something that Tony Martin lacked.

Excellent episode, fellas! I'm a nut for the "wilderness" era of Sabbath. You guys laid it out very well! I learned some new details, such as Steve Grimmett being considered. I would have LOVED a whole album of Iommi and Peter Steele songs! Since Tony was writing a lot of slow, dirge riffs in the 90s/00s, who would be a better collaborator than The Green Man? 💚🖤

A few blanks filled: Nicky Moore from Samson was absolutely considered after Dio in 1982, but his huge girth made him a non-starter. And there ARE recordings of Dave Donatto with Sabbath on KZbin, easy to find. The most interesting rumors not discussed by you guys were the possible reunion with Dio in 1988 for what became the Headless Cross project. This was even reported in Circus magazine, so it was not just underground.

4 songs were recorded with Dave Donato the demos were produced by Bob Ezrin titled Don't Beg the Master , Dancing With the Devil , Sail On and No Way Out which became The Shining on the album Eternal Idol. Since these songs were recorded with 3 original members of Sabbath Tony, Geezer and Bill Ward possibly one day all 4 songs could surface. No Way Out is already available on KZbin. Cheers

13:07 As I recall, back in 1980, Sabbath were getting "long in the tooth" as the old expression goes, and when a bunch of us high schoolers heard that Ronnie James Dio (the singer of rainbow) was going to be the new Black Sabbath singer, it felt like it was going to be a welcome shot in the arm for the band. If you've ever noticed; Sabbath's albums sold less and less as the 70's went on, according to the Billboard charts. Sometimes I think Sabbath should have stopped in '75 ala Deep Purple and "come taste the band." Great conclusion. Great show.
@neuroisis85
@neuroisis85 Күн бұрын
I've often considered that myself, but I don't think they needed to call it quits in '75. What they should have done is take say '76 off and when they reconvened they should of went back to focusing on brute force. Knock out an album in a week in '77, make sure it's heavy, aggressive and hits hard. Then try to do a tour with Motorhead or Priest or both. Really I think the rest of the band needed to reign in Iommi's tendencies toward Prog and Art Rock at this point and bring back the Metal. That or force Iommi to go full Prog Metal with no compromise. Instead they sat on a beach and let Iommi write a shite Queen record.

Back around 1989 I saw Jeff Fenholt speak at a local church being that he became somewhat of an evangelist. Half of his talk, he spoke about his "time" with Sabbath. He kept saying the demons were manifesting and he was visited by demons and demon demon demon the whole time he played with Sabbath. He really capitalized on the Satanic Panic and Sabbath were the center of demonic activity. I guess he never heard Venom before.

Awesome episode. I have read quite a few Sabbath and Sabbath related books and do not remember hearing about Jon Oliva! Wow. I think he would of done really well doing the Ozzy songs. I still wish Ray Gillen stayed atleast for the Eternal Idol tour. His version of the album is phenomenal. No slight to Tony Martin as I really like him as well. I like all the Sabbath eras. All different but all great. As far as someone I think would of been a great choice the first person popped in my head is Rhett Forrester. After he was gone from Riot he released a few solo albums but imagine him fronting Sabbath? Man that would of been incredible. And how could that have changed his fate? We will never know.

There's a demo of Dave Donato singing a song called No Way Out which later became The Shining on the Eternal Idol. You can also find demos of Jeff Fenholt doing demos for (apparently) The Geezer Butler Band on youtube too. I think Coverdale's voice would have been perfect for singing the song Black Sabbath.

The story of Graham Bonnet receiving a call from somebody from the Sabbath management asking for an audition is interesting, I presume that must've been around early 1980 from what Graham has said on interviews. He turned it down, but despite the incompatibility of his look with Sabbath's image, it'd have been interesting to hear his rendition of the 70s classics, stuff like War Pigs or Symptom with that powerful vocal range.

I don't think he would ever leave MANOWAR. Why would he? MANOWAR were so much better than Sabbath, and I love Sabbath, but compare MANOWAR to Sabbath from the time MANOWAR started and Sabbath sucks in comparison. Dio was alright, but to me the Ozzy era is the real Black Sabbath.

The majority of people ( I know ) that have witnessed all iterations of Black Sabbath Live. Say that Tony Martin pulled off all era's best in a live setting. Of course this was when he was on. It is said at times he had issues live. It is written in some periodicals in the past that The Cross Purposes live shows were recorded when martin was sick with ( if memory serves ) either bronchitis or pneumonia. As a Sabbath fan from the beginning I love every era. My introduction to the band was "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" which I purchased at 17 yrs of age. Needless to say I bought all the preceding albums shortly thereafter. Fave era, the Osbourne years. Second Place it is tied between Dio and Martin, with a slight not to the Dio era because of the consistency of the lineups. If Iommi had the same lineup throughout the Martin era they may have toppled the Dio era (IMO...I know I am on a short list ) eventually. As for Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes, for stand alone albums I frickin' love them! Slight nod to "Seventh Star" because as much as I love Ian, I'm more of a Hughes guy. Also, production is worse on "Born Again" as we all know. Great show guys, appreciate your efforts as always, Metal Head Joe🤘
