We will be going back to this area to get even more Gold and digging out the main shaft so we can see what relics have been left behind from that time period. If you need to dig that shaft out.. the only safe way I can figure is to dig it out from the top down. Working it from the base of the slide is asking for gravity to Bury you.

How far to the top; I was think using a vacuum and suck the loose rock and fine stuff outside or to another section that is not going to be used. Powered by a portable generator. Put the loose rock fines into another section of the mine. Agree with another person break up the big boulders for easy lifting, and sack the rock like a retaining wall to help hold back any other stuff coming down.

When a kid at the age to first hunt in Pa in 1977 on my first trip to mountains my dad said about the lost gold from the civil war in the mountains of north central pa. Wasn't sure if a tall tale or what but they even had tourist treasure maps in local gas stations. Well about two years ago some treasure hunters believed they located it in dents run elk county Pa. If you search lost civil war gold in dents run you'll find the story. In the late 70s my dad even bought a metal detector we'd take up there hunting and fishing. He passed in 1998 and I'm sure he's up there telling me I told you so!!! Rip pap! Dents run is about 20 miles from where we hunted. I've actually hunted there years later. Cool stuff

Jeff, Please be sure to keep the padding between the rope and sharp edges of the rock or lagging as you’re lowering yourself over the edge then rappelling or jugging back up. I’m your video, watch how the rope pulled hard across the lagging as you dropped into the shaft. Need to control that a little more, caus climbing ropes cut easily when hauled tight and scraped across a knife edge. When developing rock routes, repel slings are arranged, 3 points minimum, always trying to keep the rope free from running over an edge and easy to pull through once your down on the ground. If the rope has to go over an edge, than very gently ease your weight over and control the downward force on the rope, trying to find the softest part of the edge to line the rope on as you slowly lower off. Many climbers have died from cut ropes while falling, the rope reefed over an edge or flake. Take your knife to the rope and see how easy it will cut. It is frightening thinking of the times. I never got into mining, but your knowledge of the minerals, mining, hard work getting after it and sharing in your fun way is really cool! All be safe, Just wanted to share back to you some safety from an old climber. Kindly, Hank

Our grateful park services dynamited the mine, because some other kids found it too and they got lost in it. I have found some specimens from the blasting, but nothing to brag about.. They are Great for kids collecting rocks, gets them all excited seeing some quartz with gold speckles..

I can’t remember where exactly I saw this and it really bothers me.I’d like to go back and find out for sure.I’m not sure if my father knew about gold,he wasn’t a prospector or have any kind of hobby similar. Crain out the timber and stuff. And then perhaps a giant vacuum hose, like a dredge, from outside like they do in the opal mines in Australia. And maybe that could get you down to the shafts without caving in on anyone. Just a thought...

I would love to come help dig in those mines. As long as i get to keep some AU haha. Take a small pail down there on that slope fill er up and dump it on the other side of the timbers your digging out. Right over the top just dump it. OR, have some walkies and a guy up top with a winch and just bring it up one bucket at a time. Make a pile and you can also process that when your done.

In the early 1990's while exploring I found and old mine and the creek bed down stream of it was glowig yellow with pyrite. I was a teenager then and didn't know much. I collected some of the pyrite and moved on. Some years later I learned that sulfides carry gold. I crushed and panned that pyrite and it was full of gold. The richest ore I've ever seen. All the gates leading to the site are now locked 15 miles out from the mine. I rode a bicycle in there once. But the creek bed is now covered 16 feet deep in overburden and massive boulders. I didn't even find a color panning in that creek. No one will ever know what is under there. Till it washes out again.
