In this video we look for a possible underground water leak and try to locate a pipe with dowsing rods. We also make a wrench to shut off the water to the house in the meter box.

We had a sewer clay line pipe break which was under the asphalt which backed-up everthing in the house so their were absolutely no signs in the asphalt to locate the pipe or the break. We thought it changed angle at some point down the drive way which was in a fairly large area of the carport. My friend grabbed a coat hanger bent it up and did the same method as the gentleman in the video. He went back and forth across alleged pipe and marked the pipe and the bend by marking both sides of the pipe within a foot of each side of the pipe. He marked the route of the clay pipe for about 40 feet where the break was or assumed so. Plumbers came in trenched 10 feet up to his chalk marks hitting the clay pipe with the marks lined in the direction of the sewer pipe at the far end of the trench from where they suspected the break was and never even came close to the break. After not locating the break themselves, plumber's decided to try the spot marked by my friend and doug up his mark on the pavement and they hit the break within 1 foot of the mark and 12 feet from theirs. This was back in 1984. I couldn't imagine this ever working but my friend not only found the break but was able to map the pipe in the ground position from the house, turn point and down the drive way next to the cinder block wall two feet out from it. He nailed all of it. Should not be possible, but it was far from just luck. Everyone including the plumbers were off by 10 to 15 feet. He was dead on the center of the pipe the entire way.

Locate your water meter(A)and the location where your water line first enter your building(B).Mark the straight line from A to B on the ground (maybe using white flour, dry sand ,wooden pegs etc).Measure the depth of your water meter if it is placed in a chamber below ground level. locate the most healthy vegetation (grass scrub etc) along the previously marked line. Carefully dig a 1 foot wide by 16 inches deep(go deeper than your underground meter maybe 1 feet extra) across the selected area.Extend your trench 3 feet on both side of your line. Find your pipe.Cut and plug your pipe end that joining to the meter. Turn on your water and see if there is leakage in your pipe(The meter stop reading if there is no leakage)Now you know that it is along the line toward your building that leaking..and the rest is luck..(retired CE) And ya water witching is good to be done during dry weather and if your ground water is far below your ground level other wise you might got water flow from other sources rather than your domestic pipe water. By the way it does help if you increase the flow of your water by turning on a couple of water outlet in your house and believe me the wonder sticks do tell you the flow direction of your pipe.Good luck.And do not use a very thick rod simply use the thinner metal cloth hanger as the action is more sensitive for life flowing water detection.(I do use my sticks this morning just to make sure what I said was true and It was true)

For those of ya'll that don't think this works. I'm an experienced utility locator and this is the last resort for looking for underground utilities. But let me tell you. This works 90% of the time. I can't explain it but I've literally done it hundreds of times and I've proven it to people in the field. Of course, GPR and a pipe and cable locator are good but the witching sticks are good and last alternative.

Try introducing compressed air to the line. Given how wet your yard is this would definitely help expedite the process. Great job chasing the leak. I have also had luck using these rods while walking along the top of the service line. The rods will usually both turn to the left when above the leak. I have seen this response after I use all of my Sewerin leak tools to pinpoint the leak.

For anyone that thinks they may have a leak in the yard. Find your main shut off valve for the home. (It may be in a basement, crawl space, or a small storage area if your on a slab.) Turn the valve off, then go to your meter and check to see if the dial is spinning. If it’s a digital meter the last 2 numbers will be going up. If it’s not then you do not have a outside leak.

I called American Leak Detection. They filled the water pipes with gas, then poked holes in the ground to find where the gas was concentrating. It was $300 well spent, compared to digging up my entire water line. I also tried dowsing; despite comments to the contrary, it didn't work.

This really does work. My grand dad did it many times while i watched. He showed me how and in construction work for 35 years ive seen guys find utilities that the gas,water& electrical companies marked wrong. Works on a similar principal as checking watermelons and cantalopes for ripeness. Take a straw from a broom straighter and smoother the better. Rub it on something to create static electricity. Balance it on the melon in question. It will spin like a compass. The rioer the melon the juicier the melon. The juicier the more the straw will spin. Or it could just be magic!

@davidreynolds4684
@davidreynolds4684 3 жыл бұрын
Did you open the valves in the house to allow back pressure to bleed off? If all valves are closed the pressure in the system will continue to push water out of the weakest point like a crack or break. When you open a valve it will still leak out but by water level only. Anypoint higher than the leak will eventually drain until the water in the system is level with the leak height.

Pipes do not have to be metal. Ive found tons of plastic pipes . To find the pipe you should make multiple passes and mark each one. If they are in a straight line there's your pipe. I suggest holding the wires firmly, your wont be able to keep them from spinning and there's less chance of flopping due to dropping the tips. You can make them spin where you want by changing the angle. Ive used all kinds of metal wire.

The moment is caused by subconscious reflexe. Your subconscious makes decision and the tool gives language to that. You supposedly receive information from energy fields to your subconscious and you see it as movement. If it works like that it's very very unreliable and works only on very few people. Similarly to people in military projects who do telepathy or sort. For example the water was visible on the ground so it's just natural the sticks would cross there.

Sir, I am familiar with witch craft but I am a non believer in whitching it. Could you take two pens, open both pens and remove the ink cartridges. Insert you bent metal sticks into the hollow pen and see if the metal sticks would turn without human intervention by holding the metal sticks directly. The metal sticks would be free to rotate or spin when influenced by the underground pipe. If I can see this done without contact with human hands, perhaps I would become s believer of this technique.

Apparently Marty Feldman picked out my brain for me??? Really, here's how to try. Get your rods, try coat hanger cause I know they work. get some friends and a couple bottles of wine and snacks. Got to a park that has a sprinkler system , Hold your rods out and start walking. When they cross put a flag in the ground. Move over 15 to 20 feet and start walking again. Keep putting flags in the ground. You should see a pattern develope after a few passes. Once you get a Lin established follow till it hits a sprinkler head. Now, you need to do this with multiple people because it does not work for everyone. At the end of the day you will 1) learn whether it works for you or not, 2) have a fun outing with close friends. Pipes dont have to be metal to find them, I find plastic pipes all the time. I do believe they need water in them. If you're not willing to go try this then you are brain dead.

You didn't mention if your line was plastic or copper. If copper an electromagnetic locators would pin point the path of your water line. Then you could use a acoustic locator to pin point the leak. Even if your line is plastic acoustic locating would be better than witching. Witching is always a last resort. Hey, So what was the end result? I see your sticks didn't really find the pipe or the leak for that matter? Did you figure that you have an underground artisan well? I have a similar "leak" but Im digging up a huge area searching for it.
@bryansprojects3570

The sticks were to help confirm where the water line was located since I knew where it left the house and the location of the water meter. I finally determined it had to be groundwater since the meter was not turning. It eventually stopped. It seems odd since this is the highest house on the street. I may do a follow up video with the sticks since nobody believes that it works.

@@bryansprojects3570 I really appreciate your reply and must have missed the part where you dug up the pipe. I just dug holes around a 25ft radius in my yard and about 24" down water would pool in from all sides. It's coming off the rainy season so must be ground water. I found no leaks on the only irrigation pipe nearby and even with the water off still kept flowing. Water is crystal clean too.

What are the rods made of? Are they copper or metal?
@bryansprojects3570
@bryansprojects3570 3 жыл бұрын
They are steel with a copper coating used for TIG welding. I think any style of wire will work, you could bend up a metal coat hanger they just need to be pretty straight to be balanced.

Can you explain the physics for this?
@bryansprojects3570
@bryansprojects3570 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently there is no science if you Google search. It is all subtle subconscious movements of your hand. I seem to recall from a college physics or science class that it has something to do with the electrons in the water setting up a magnetic fields . I have also seen it has something to do with the density of the soil where it was excavated to bury the pipe. So to honest I don't really know but it does work. I have done it in other places.
