I've been waiting to see a streamer video in NZ! That's exactly what I was expecting too. Absolutely epic!!!! Just a tip when streamer fishing though, strip setting usually makes for higher success rate at distance. When fish take super close trout setting can work better.
@kevinearl96252 жыл бұрын
Agree, strip to strike rather than lifting the rod should help the hookup rate, its more like saltwater fly fishing. Fantastic video
@Stilleyster2 жыл бұрын
Glad you guys made the same observation. It’s easier said than done but exactly correct. I was getting ready to make the same comment. Hope Gareth sees your comment. He’s a great fisherman.
@Zoltan12512 жыл бұрын
i almost had stroke watching the video.... when you fish and two fish falls off you have to change something, thats common sense... and especially obvious when you have soft tip fly rod with big hooks catching hard mouth fish.... like, what were they expecting?
@BobBurgerKingJrАй бұрын
but those fish, just works of art. so beautiful... thanks for the 4k!
@colerorick7942 жыл бұрын
Great video. I would try a wider gap hook on the fly might help fish stay hooked or get hooked.
@craigf3624 Жыл бұрын
In Alaska, we use rabbit hare black leeches with a trailing hook for rainbows, they're deadly at certain times. They have dumbbell eyes, they're articulated with a some flash between the eyes and the hook eye. Called a "Willie Nelson". Mouse patterns skated across the surface can also be deadly.

Great time... Well done.... When I tie Big Articulated Streamers for Trout they have two hooks and sometimes a third stinger...90% of the fish caught are on the rear hook... You know, those hooks you dont even want around your vise ......LOL Those... Thanks Again

Killer AM RAINBOW shot, diggin those quads, reminds me of the East Cape of Baja. See you in Feb. I’ll be on the Makarora, unless you guys can think of a better plan.
@robinslee12 жыл бұрын
Smazing that when you strip set instead of lifting the rod on the bump, you actually hook the fish instead of ripping it out of its mouth. Fish will hit a moving streamer quite differently than a nymph or a dry, often times bumping it to stun. A fish that will chase down another fish is usually doing it out of total reaction. Shorten your leader and terminal in pretty heavy test. This allows the streamer fisherman to strip set really hard. I can only dream of streamer fishing a river that good. Pretty amazing.

Hi Gareth , I've just started tying and fishing Sculpin type flies this season here in the UK. Watching a big trout appear out of a deep pool and engulf the fly nearly under your rod tip is so exiting ! coupled with the fact that over here these flies attract the bigger fish. Keep up the good work .
@douglasjrhodes2 жыл бұрын
Super cool video. Loved seeing those huge trout attack those those beautiful streamers. Reminds me of fishing for red fish in Louisiana. Someone mentioned larger gap hooks and I agree, more exposed hook is needed for sure with that many missed fish. Just trying to be helpful to share, humbly…For red fish, I settled with “Owner” hook brand, model Mutu Light Wire, super needle point. Size 6 to 2. They have a small barb which I just smash down. If you don’t mind that. Don’t know if that’s available “down under”, just in case you want to try? Gosh, those are some beautiful flies!!
@jarrettlandreth2852 жыл бұрын
Dude I’ve been hoping you’d try this for so long! Besides dry fly eats, watching a big trout ambush a streamer right at your feet is the next best thing! I hope this trip convinced you to carry a few game changers on every outing from now on, it’s worth it!
@briljantje95833 ай бұрын
Stunning footage, especially that drone shot at 15'45''. A lot of misses though, despite the double hook on that streamer. You have an explanation to that Gareth?
@TroutHuntingNZ3 ай бұрын
No not really some days it just happens. We have gone through there with streamers a lot of time and some days you don’t miss.

I think a lot us have been wondering why the NZ guys don't do more streamer fishing, especially considering the size of trout that you have. Big fish eat big meals!! Either way, glad to see you're getting in the game, it's a blast to watch for sure.

You might want to try a smaller diameter hook wire to lessen all those missed hook ups. Smaller will pierce the fish's mouth easier! Otherwise, another great video!!

For me in the US best way to fish gamechangers is 45 downstream and strip and kill across the swing might have a better hook up grain of salt on that. Amazing video love to see more of them

I'm an old retired fly fisherman here in the States (Central Oregon) and have never seen anyone hold their fly pole underneath their arm while streamer fishing?! But hey, if it works!! My guess is that the hooks on the streamers were not barbed; is that correct? I'm also thinking a wooly booger with a spinner on the end would have given you similar results and not as expensive. Tight lines my friend. Cheers

Hahaha, see you are a Yuge fly fisherman 👍👍 the drone overhead was great with the eat. Why do you think you lost so many? I've got some spines to will be tying up some micro game changers. Fishing with sink tips suck. Did you weight the game changers? more hook-ups with two hooks or one?
@ryanlambert122102 жыл бұрын
Stroke to land ratio is always low with streamers for me but I think getting the fish on the reel is important. Stripping them in you’re constantly creating and losing tension which allows time for them to shake the hook out.

inspiring stuff you two Excellent effort

Been waiting for a sick streamer video from you my man! That drone shot was epic. The double handed retrieve is great in theory but I think you saw how it affects the hook set in a tight setting like you guys were in. Looks cool but not the best for burying streamers once the fish connects

You gotta try dead sticking them in a seam and swinging them like a soft hackle ...it's a really good way to fish big streamers
@jonathanhof38342 жыл бұрын
Great vid! U would get more successful hookups on these fish if you let them run after u set the hook. In the video y’all keep pulling to set the hook. When you feel the fish set the hook and then let them fight. Don’t pull so hard they still go delicate mouths
