For South Africans, this must have been like the real version of the 'Tupac is sill alive' or 'Elvis is still alive' legends.

Way more, Tupac or Elvis don't even come close. As a South African, I still remember the shock when I heard he was alive. This was before I saw the film. I was just like "nope, not possible". You have to understand that he was a legend (and a mystery) for many many years. He "died" before there was even TV in South Africa.

If you haven’t seen this documentary please take the advice of a 50 year old Australian man who discovered the beautiful music of Rodriguez only after watching “Searching for Sugarman” This is by far the best music documentary I have ever seen. It is uplifting yet saddening how such a talent was somehow lost and then found. I feel I am so much better for watching this documentary as I now have the music of Rodriguez in my life. 😁👍🇦🇺

I wonder if someone will one day write the full story. For instance there is a finished 'third album' cut in the early seventies and a fourth album made in Australia in the late seventies. Many Aussies and Scandinavians will be familiar with his tours in the seventies and eighties. All the details of why they omitted those details might come to light and also what happened after he stopped touring in the early eighties.

I was born and grew up in Zambia, and I went to boarding school in ( now ) Zimbabwe. I currently live in South Africa 🇿🇦 Rodriguez was also a huge part of the lives of those of us who grew up in those Countries during the 70s and 80s. Long before I settled in South Africa ❤ And yes! I have his albums which I still play to this day❤ RIP Rodriguez ❤ You were a legend ❤

This is a true story, Rodriguez was a myth in South Africa. I had two of CDs, all my friends listened to him and we all believed he had shot himself with a shotgun. And then a few years later, he was doing tour in SA. Most of us couldn't believe that he was still alive. And his concert was epic.

For everyone referencing the Australia tour, you must realise that in South Africa we only got TV in 1978 and it was heavily censored because of the apartheid times. Stuff like internet and computers came a long time after most of the western world had it. This guy was a mythical creature and a legend at the same time. No-one even knew what he really looked like. they just loved his music, it was his rebellious lyrics that inspired people in a society where people's thoughts were censored.

it's impossible to sensor music as it can have so many meanings for so many people on different levels at the same time, he is good isn't he, or he was good/great growing up SA must have been different, I supported the anti apartheid movement here in the UK attending some huge rallies/marches, I used to wonder did the people of SA know the amount of support they had outside the country right across the globe, I must say I'm disappointed how the country turned out, same old problem, some people don't want to be happy, they chose chaos and disorder when they've known nothing else,

The film's narrative omits that Rodriguez was also very successful in Australia in the mid seventies, due to exposure by DJ Holger Brockman on Sydney's 2JJ. Rodriguez had gained a strong foothold in Australia - a phenomenon that was mirrored in South Africa's apartheid a little later. In all with 4 LPs published by Blue Goose in Australia. In 1979 when his hidden fame was finally revealed to him, he was invited to tour Australia and, to his great surprise, he played to packed houses in 979 and 1981. As he told ABC Radio 702 Breakfast this week: "Australia was the first one to pick me up ... I came and I did fifteen shows." "Australia was the highpoint in my career," he said. "We did the Regent Theatre (Sydney), a 2,000-seater." "We sold out four nights and it was half full for the fifth ... and that was my first time in Sydney." The 'Rodriquez Alive' LP was put out. He was never 'lost'. He simply gave up on the music industry and went to university to do a business degree and got involved in local politics.[14] Because of this omission some critics have called the documentary "myth-making".[15][16] However, the film focuses on his mysterious reputation in South Africa and the attempts of music historians there to track him down in the mid-1990s. South Africans were unaware of his Australian success due to the harsh censorship enacted by the apartheid regime until the 1990s[17] coupled with international sanctions that made any communication with the outside world on the subject of banned artists virtually impossible. Nevertheless, by the time of the making of the movie, Rodriquez's Australian story was well known by fans in South Africa with pictures of the cover of the 'Rodriquez Alive' cassette featured on the Sugarman website, two decades after apartheid ceased to exist.[18]

The story was never really, first hand, about Rodriguez though, it was about the South African people. It was their search for Sugar Man. So I would not say that the basic premise of the film is dishonest, you misunderstood the perspective of the film.

ummmm, William was just pointing out that twan's comment was in re to Malik's passing... if you, Robbie, wanted to talk about the premise, you could've done so by making your own new comment elsewhere.., ... re Sixto... fine, he toured Australia n' had a live album.... but after that, back to hard blue collar work in Detroit, so in that sense he was lost from the music scene.... i've seen him three times since the movie came out, and w/o the movie i'd likely not have heard of him.... so, thanks, again, Malik, and rest peacefully...

@@leavingitblank9363because the documentary is aimed at those new to his story. The first half sticks with the legend that he was dead after commiting suicide on stage. Just like South Africans were lead to believe for 20+ years. It's trying to place you in their shoes so you get a sense of the mystery surrounding him and his music and just a fraction of the amazement people must have felt to discover he was still alive and still able to play and sing his music for people.

I saw this film a few years ago and have been a Rodriguez fan ever since. I have to agree with the previous commenters, this is the best music documentary I've ever watched, and I've watched a lot of them!

Really looking forward to seeing this. Unreal that Sixto was so unappreciated here in the States that he gave up music & in South Africa he is bigger than Elvis. That's like alot of our blues & roots artists who only are appreciated overseas as well. Sometimes I wonder if we Yanks have any musical taste.

Happy he finally has achieved the recognition & respect he deserves & Director Bendjelloul's doc. & the soundtrack are also helping USA audiences discover what South Africans already know, what a talented musical essayist he is.

I find it ironic that his music truly is very good,he never got the fame he deserves or the royalties, nor radio play in his own country, yet he never made a big scene like untalented egotistical musicians do today. But he has that genuinely humble thing going on.Is he just like that or is there a deeper story of sadness that made him such a man?
