A huge thank you to Adam (for repeatedly pulling me out of the mud) and for finding such an amazing spot for the Swallowtail. Hope you enjoy!

Always thought swallowtails where on the continent and not in England. 5 years in conservation and only just found this out, always finding new things with conservation, love it!

I didn't even know we got swallowtails in the UK! I remember when I was very little seeing a swallowtail migration over the south of France, it passed through the garden we were in. Totally overwhelmed by giant butterflies!

Well done you! The King (Queen?) of British butterflies, found only in Norfolk and you saw them.

When going out to catch butterflies I find that the best way to swing your net is to swish and flick.

In portugal she used to be more comon than nowadays, especially because of invasive plants (pampas grass, arundo donax, acacias eucaliptos, ipomea indica etc) especially on northwest).

Such beautiful butterflies, and such a shame they're now restricted to just a small area of Norfolk. I'm guessing this was back in late June/early July? Went looking for them last year but it was just a bit too late so only saw a couple from a long way off.

In the first split second of reading the title, my brain put the words together as "Maddie swallowed a butterfly."

Full disclosure: I just removed a comment from this thread because it was an extreme overshare. Please, Rapilol, keep these things to yourself in the future or, failing that, do share them with the world in your own thread and preferably in one where the person you're fantasizing over hasn't already commented themselves. It's kind of rude.

I think the smell of parsley helps the eggs and caterpillars safe to predators. 😍

Fantastic video, Maddie! I'm curious why the pineapple smell given off by the caterpillars would do such a good job repelling birds - you'd think if anything it would make them seem more delicious...

Milk parsley? I thought the ones in california when i was a child, ate anise or licorice plant that looked like the parsley.

Ah, but did you find and rare Pokemon on the Broads? Hahaha! These prestige areas are great, there's so much to see if you stop and look. Don't they harvest the rushes for roofing thatch?

Yes they do! Good knowledge :-)

I've never seen a swallowtail. I don't know if they live in the south midlands. Where I live, the number of butterflies has dropped dramatically this year. Even my buddleja isn't covered in butterflies; I haven't seen a tortoiseshell since the spring. Is it the same across the country? Could it be because of the weather earlier on this year?

We have tons of Red Admiral and Peacock Butterfliy Catterpillas on the Nettles. We had to stop people from clearing the Nettles or that would of been another lot of Butterflies wiped out. Yes Swallow Tails are in the Mids, I am just North of you. We definitely had them on Thistle Flowers few years back. The Buddlejas did look a bit empty last year but I think thats dwon to the winds blowing them to south eastern Europe. if we get the right winds we should have loads of butterflies this year. Butterflies like Red Admirals often fly thousands of miles when they migrate. We had a female Orange Tip laying eggs on the Hedge Garlic today.

@@1stBumbleBeeMaster British swallowtails only live on Norfolk Broads due to the milk parsley. Uk sometimes gets the Southern Swallowtail over from Europe. Certainly NONE have ever been recorded outside of Norfolk so not sure what you saw.
