I did a record with Mark Howard who uses the original RCA for most of his tracking. They're amazing mics and I'm not sure how this stacks up to the original, but lovely video! Most impressed TBH with your production! Those tracks sounded amazing. Nice tune as well!

Thanks mate! Ribbon mics are pretty special - definitely a challenge recording a song using just ribbons - but they do take EQ pretty well! Maybe I should do a mix breakdown of this one too.

Wow - awesome work. I think we could give you about any microphone and you could get a pretty good result. The WA mic sounds great on drums. I love one-mic drums and the acoustic guitar sounds fantastic with the high boost. I wish you would have had time for some harmony vocals!

Haha thanks! Harmonies would have been good, it was just taking a long time to put it all together so decided to just do the lead vocal this time!

Liked it on electric guitar, drums and vocals. Not crazy about it on acoustic. Seems like there was a lot of low end information that would need to be eq'd out in the mix - not enough chime and sparkle. But....in your final mix it sounded great. Liked the song. Cool demo, Rhys.

With the acoustic, just depends on the vibe - if you want sparkle a condenser is the way to go, if you want warm and smooth the ribbon does a pretty nice thing! For a solo acoustic recording it would be pretty nice with a touch of EQ! In a full band mix, yeah it needs a bit of carving! Thanks mate!

Nice performance! Sounds great. Assuming a low noise floor can't you always get the brightness you want with EQ without any negatives?

Yeh that’s true, if you crank a lot of top end EQ you’ll start to bring up noise. In the context of a full mix you can get away with it a little, but if it was a solo acoustic performance it would be limited before you start to bring that noise forward and it becomes audible - that’s just like any ribbon mic though

Fantastic work here man!! Great playing, production, performances, all around!!! I found the vid looking for reviews on the Warm Lifter with the SM7B. (F’ing LOATHE the cloudlifter lol.) - i know this is a mic review but I’d be curious to know your thoughts on it. Hope all is well and just subbed!

Thanks Jeremy! I appreciate that man! Yeah I was not a fan of the cloud lifter. I haven’t tried the same test with the warm lifter on the SM7b, but it didn’t seem to be an issue with the WA44. The warm lifter has high pass filter and a high self boost, so that’s handy to have!
