automating the threshold to kill the string squeak is a great tip. i usually use a de-esser and try to zone right in on the offending frequencies, but it can kill the frequencies you want to keep in if you set it too hard. i'm gassing for that SSL multiband as well, but i'll wait for it to go on sale!

Thanks man! I've been looking for a straightforward multiband compression video. I'd been eyeing that SSL multi-band comp for a while too. I love the fact that you can set specific things on the frequency graph just by dragging around with the mouse instead of using the knobs. That's pretty cool!

Your tips are all great. Many I've learned the hard way but it's great too see your solutions to very common issues. Great channel. I rely on Pro-MB alot myself. Another one is Focusrite FAST Reveal. It has a fast mode or detailed mode it's great to for frequency specific ducking.

Pro-MB in dynamic mode is actually a dynamic eq, it doesn't split the bands (unlike minimum phase mode which does split the bands). Nice vid! Great ideas

I've always been weary of multi-band compression for a number of reaons, but this demonstration shows it can be a very powerful tool! I tend to use dynamic EQ instead but I will surely give a try to all these techniques. Thank you!

Always had questions about this topic and it always seemed rather daunting top tackle. Will def apply this in my coming mixes. BTW Rhys; you mentioned in your studio tour about the whole mic thing and recording in GB and Logic at the same time. There is a much easier way: Download OBS, assign a screen record device, assign the mic from the interface, the screen capture and also your camara and you would be recording all of them literally at the same time. All in a single file you can import into CapCut (or whatever you are using to edit). No syncing audios no latency, everything recorded all at once. The draw back is it requires set up in order to get all the levels right since you won't be able to separate them after the fact. But this is what streamers do in order to get everything at the same time.
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 3 ай бұрын
Thanks mate! I’ll definitely look into that. I do like having the ability to adjust the vocals and audio examples separately, surely there is away to get them as seperate stems? Hmm
@komobabo
@komobabo 3 ай бұрын
@@spinlightstudios There might be to be honest but as is, it is all in a single file and stereo audio file. There is a LOT of videos on the subject so I assume you will def be able to find out quickly. I myself just do the set up so signals are as I want them before recording too. I am sure you will figure it out m8!

Hi friend, which drum sample packs have these kick, snare sounds from the song you mixed, country made by Jake Davey?? I'm interested in this incredible sound of drums. The dollar is very high here in Brazil, if the dollar value was the same in reais as here, it would be incredible, congratulations, your mixes are excellent.

Hi Rhys. Off topic question if that's okay... if you were to use only a SSL G bus compressor and Pultec EQ on the mixbus, which would you put first? Thanks heaps!
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 3 ай бұрын
Hmm honestly either way will work, it probably depends if you are compressing the mix bus heavily which you would put first. If you don’t want the compressor to react to the EQ moves, you might prefer to use it after. For example if you’re boosting some low end and it’s making the compressor work harder.

@@spinlightstudios Okay, thanks. I was thinking only 1 or 2db of reduction with the compressor - will experiment and try both ways. Loving your content btw.

The challenge I have when mixing, is knowing where to listen for issues in EQ. How have you gone about training your ears to hear issues that need EQ treatment?
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 3 ай бұрын
It just takes time... listening to lots of music on your monitors - getting to know your monitoring is the only way you can make good decisions with EQ.

But then you would end up with an awkward silence? doing it this way, only the High frequencies get duck and the low end remains intact and it sounds natural still.

Thanks for the videos Rhys. I've noticed in a few of your videos that you often create a track lane for your auxiliaries then move it in and out of the track stack folder. I can't seem to find an explanation as to why you do this? Maybe you don't and I'm just not paying attention. All the best.
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 3 ай бұрын
Sometimes if I make a send/bus I add it to the global window and by dragging the channel out of the track stack and back in, it changes the output of that channel to the track stack. Usually when I create a new send it goes straight to stereo out. This is just a quick way of getting the output to change to the track stack without having to look and change the output manually. Hope that makes sense.
