When I worked at a pub we had a sheet behind the bar of all the cocktails we made with all the measurements so if I didn't know how to make one I knew how to make it with the sheet

Well that’s what was missing here with most of these bars. If they have a drink menu it solves a ton of problems cause most folks will order off that and they can keep the drinks consistent with a certain recipe. Then knowing how to make a few classic drinks is just extra skills

I've been a bartender for years so I feel bad for these folks every once in a while. Like I can't think of how to make a cosmopolitan off the top of my head because I've literally never had to make it. No one orders it in a midwest sports bar. That old fashioned was appalling, though...

Its also pretty annoying how Jon criticizes these bartenders for not knowing their drinks... then goes on to be wrong about the drink himself. He says theres no pineapple in a Mai Tai (correct), but then goes on to say theres orange juice in it (incorrect), and leaves out that there should be lime juice in it.

I can't even remember the last time someone ordered a cosmo from me. There's a lot of cocktails my man, it's easy to slip up on one when you never make it. Even something simple like a cosmo.

2:30 they laugh at the bartender: "there's no pineapple juice in a mai tai" Actually Mai Tai specs are notoriously different, to the point where it's a meme in bartending circles. The only consistent truth of a mai tai is floating dark rum, almond syrup, and lime. I've seen specs with orange juice, with pineapple, with spiced rum, with white rum, with amber rum, curacao, simple syrup, whatever. Look it up right now, you'll find all the top results are different from each other

It’s all about the knowledge and basic skills and giving them confidence they can do whatever. Sure slot of bars will serve nothing fancy or special but after the show releases they’ll get an influx of customers that will order things like that.

What's weird is I've seen a lot of Bar Rescue clips (don't watch the actual show) for quite some time, and this is the FIRST time I've ever heard of a drink called the godfather being mentioned, so I have some doubts how common that is. Cosmos come up on this show somewhat often, and I actually hear it outside of the show. I do think Jon sometimes asks for drinks that, while common in SOME areas, may not be so popular in specific niches. So the goal is either to stump the bartender or give them a chance to show they're more knowledgeable than he thinks they are.

sometimes i feel like the recon people are told which cocktails to order, even if they don’t really know what they are the guy at 1:33 says “she’s trying to take YOU home tonight”, implying that the drink was strong…which an old fashioned obviously is also, a Mai Tai has LIME juice, not orange as John says. you can vary it with orange juice, but by that same token you can vary it with pineapple

Tell John there's no orange juice in a Mai Tai. Rum, Dry Curacao, Orgeat and fresh lime juice. Successful versions have included acid adjusted pineapple juice but definitely no orange juice

I've seen variations on the Mai Tai use orange juice. Not that they're any good but someone certainly tried it. The trouble is with Tiki is that most people dismiss it as just alcoholic fruit juice, and it can very easily be like that with drinks like the Coronado Luau Special or Molokai Mule. However, your Trader Vic Mai Tais or a Singapore Sling helps to punch through that misconception, especially as the latter gets a lot of sweeteness from its liqueurs.

I know this show is about bars but you guys gotta hear this story I got from one time I rented a room at a hotel. So I get to this hotel early in the evening, I check in and get the key to my room. Behind me there's this couple and I could hear they were arguing about something to do with the girlfriend/wife's sister. I decide to ignore it and take the elevator to my room, I get in check the room and everything is fine. Turns out this couple has the room right next to me and as soon as they get in, the fight starts to escalate, I could hear them yelling and cursing at one another with all kinds of hurtful things being said. Eventually the woman storms out of the room yelling across the hallway, I hear the dude throwing stuff in their room and he follows her out about a minute later. He forgets to shut the door to their room when he leaves and soon after I hear them yelling outside on the parking lot, so I decide to get in there, I took a huge dump on their bed and wiped my behind with the curtains for good measure and went back to my room. Thanks for reading my story. =)

A lot of these bars have employees simply based on their looks and not for their passion for customer service or bartending knowledge. Its honestly half the fault of the ownership and half the fault of the bartenders. If you enjoy your job and smile it would be so easy to learn and at least reference recipes on a sheet behind the bar. But most of them are just there as a pair of big boobs and the ability to drink for free
