The Orthax ending seemed a little abrupt because it was wrapped up due to luck. Percy did roll a Nat20 to resist the demon's influence. It was supposed to only be a temporary reprieve. After the campaign was over, Matt said they were supposed to eventually have travel to kill the demon on his own plane to free Percy permanently. He also said anything less than a 20 and Percy would have kept trying to kill them. Then Scanlan picked up the gun and threw it in the acid. He totally did it just to be a troll. The actor said so. Turns out the gun was the demon's anchor to Percy. The pact was destroyed. Two lucky flukes and Percy had control of his own soul.

Yes, Keyleth has a bit of a thing for Vex while being into Vax at the same time. Marisha (Keyleth) would role play getting flustered/happy when Vex was nice or gave her a patented 'Vex wink'. And then there's THIS conversation.... Vex: Should I flash him, will it help? (talking about helping Grog during a fight) Percy: It couldn't hurt. Keyleth: I mean... It couldn't hurt the rest of us either. Taliesin (Percy): looks surprised at Marisha and says something too quiet to hear Marisha (Keyleth): Might have a thing for twins, I don't know. Taliesin: fist boops Marisha's shoulder supportively

The Orthax fight was a bit more drawn out in the campaign, but also came as a bit of a side thing after the Briarwood fight/healing etc. Everyone was beat near to death going into the fight, out of resources, etc. The Orthax fight was a bit more simple due to this, I think. A thing to consider, is that in D&D, Demons don't die permanently when killed on the material/mortal plane though. Rather, they return to the Abyss and effectively regenerate their form; the only way (typically) to kill D&D demons is to the Abyss and kill their "true" form there basically iirc.

A really cool foreshadowing moment for this episode is in episode 7 at the 7:15 minute mark when Percy explains he swore to take revenge on the 5 people responsible for the destruction of his family while counting the barrels of his gun. Scanlan then points out that he only said 5 names and asks who the 6th barrel is for. The question never gets answered because they are interrupted. However, the scene shows Percy holding his gun to the side while his shadow (Orthax) is holding the gun to his shadow's head. Its a sneaky way to show that Percy sold his own soul to the demon as part of the pact to have his revenge. Percy is actually the 6th name on the list.
@miafiolekova5817
@miafiolekova5817 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly, Taliesin explained that while that is a fan favorite explanation. He intended the last clear barel to symbolize that there will be new names on the gun, that the killing in the name of revenge will never stop and there will be always someone who wronged him to put on the list even if the demon would make the slights in Percys head.
@haku8135
@haku8135 Жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The empty 6th barrel represents how there will always be another one, and another one. The list will never end. If he finished the 5 names, 5 more names would show up. The 6th barrel being for Percy was a fan theory that both Taliesin and Matt debunked.
@AnxietyRat
@AnxietyRat 8 ай бұрын
@@miafiolekova5817 yeah, it was a REALLY popular fan theory and it was a theory that the cast members themselves absolutely had ... But Matt and Taliesin both independently came up with the idea that it meant that the list would never end. I'm pretty sure they talk about it during the campaign one wrap up... Yeah, the cast totally thought that once the list was complete Percy would have to die.

Maybe before starting season 2, take a moment to take a look at how some of the key moments of the series where derived from the livestream. Critter Arsequeef’s channel has 10 videos ranging from 1min to 12,5min that put the livestream and animated series side by side and give a good sense of how the 57 hours livestream for his Briarwood story arc was converted into an animated series with 12 20min episodes. Sometimes they could almost copy it 1 to 1, sometimes it had to be really condensed or reinterpreted. Playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLqQNeBzVn7SheXXfvazjBFpxuEwkL6viO My personal favorite is the moment the voice actors in stream realise what is hanging from the suntree: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppfVgaednMxpobM&list=PLqQNeBzVn7SheXXfvazjBFpxuEwkL6viO&index=6 Or Scanlans moment to shine with his solo mission in the villa : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp6koqOvjZKMjLM&list=PLqQNeBzVn7SheXXfvazjBFpxuEwkL6viO&index=7 I think you’d love it to. 6:05 Percy fires more than 6 bullets without reloading twice in the season. The other time was when he shot 7 bullets into Stonefell in E6. The creators claimed that it was intentional and that the demon mode lets him have unexplainable lack of reloads. But because of how the 7th bullet was not emphasized at all and will only be noticed by very few people. You'd think they would draw more attention to it. So I think the idea came from an honest mistake/hiccup and they just committed to the cool new idea

I think in alot of storytelling now there is this expectation put on endings to be this super epic satisfying thing, and what I like about this show is that it is much more realistic. Most times endings aren't all that amazing and sometimes they leave more questions than answers. And this show (and Matt's storytelling in the original campaign) does a great job of not focusing too much on making every ending super epic and final, and instead focuses on little things like character growth. Like how Vex becomes more accepting of Keyleth, or how Percy is able to confront his demons (literally and figuratively), or how Pike learns that her faith can still be strong with the group.

Fun Fact: In D&D, devils and demons are two completely different types of creature, and both hate each other. Devils make clear deals with people- they're considered Lawful Evil, and the people they ensnare always know what they're doing when they make a pact. Demons (like Orthax) are considered Chaotic Evil, and will lie, cheat, sneak, and steal their way into deals. The only reason the fiends haven't overrun the celestials is because of their infighting. This is not relevant for season 2, just fun facts.

Percy put his hand over the barrels, literally putting himself between Orthax and Delilah, spilling his own blood to stop the demon taking her. An ultimate expression of letting go of his hate and vengeance. THAT is what drove Orthax out.

I think one of the fair criticisms of Season 1 is that some of the side characters, especially the non-Briarwood villains, are a little thin. Could have easily spent more time with Anders/Stonefell/Duke/Archie/Orthax to give more weight to those conflicts and relationships, but that would have probably required 4-5 more episodes to do properly. Without too many spoilers, I'll say that they handle this better in Season 2 (a big factor in why people say it's better) and that some of the storylines that feel slightly un-resolved may get more time to shine later, Bezos willing, in a potential Season 4-5.

Keyleth isn't gay as far as I know. Then again, I haven't even finished the first campaign yet, so I could be wrong. I believe she blushed because she wasn't used to getting positive reinforcement from Vex, so she was caught off guard by Vex's support. Until this episode, Vex was only bitter toward Keyleth, so she wasn't expecting this moment of camaraderie.

idk if i would aggressively say season 2 is "better" bc i think you need S1 shoulders to stand on for S2 to shine. you know how S1 was mostly focused on Percy and Pike? without spoilers, i would say S2 expands a lot so you get to learn a lot more about everyone else so the investment you have in them all gets deeper. i think they did up the game on animation a bit (same studio, but i think they had more time and money to put into things bc of the pandemic and it shows).

The demon Orthax was always partially a metaphor. Percy made one of the world's first reliably functional guns. People will go on to emulate his work, especially Dr Ripley who escaped (and has already attempted to recreate Percy's invention). Percy brought guns into the world and with them all the death and suffering people will cause with this new weapon. He has doomed 1000's to die with an invention he conceived to enact his own vengeance.

6:00 excellent catch you two! Most reacters I've seen (as well as me, the first time I watched this) don't realise that's what's happening. If you go back and watch the scene in the prison where Percy kills Captain Stonefell they foreshadowed this. He doesn't reload that entire sequence, but still shoots 7 shots from his 6 shooter. The demon was in control there too.

This episode is the only time in the entire campaign that Percy doesn't have to reload. In the campaign, the DM made him keep a strict ledger for both reloading and total ammo. Season 2 has a scene where Percy is buying black powder because he has to make his own ammo. When he loses control to the demon, the demon is creating it's own ammo. There was someone at the animation studio whose job it to make sure Percy reloads when he's taken the correct number of shots.

Hi there! Long time Critter first time commenter. Canonically from the players themselves over multiple interviews and event's Most of Vox Machina is Bi/Pan Sexual. while I will not go into cannon relationships as not to spoil any upcoming events it is fair to say that both Vax and Keyleth have feelings for each other. Even if Keyleth isn't able to act on those feelings at this time, but also that is not to say that she may not be into twins. Overall as someone ho started watching Critical Roll so many years ago on Geek and Sundry in the early days of campaign one. Seeing the campaign brought to life as amazing! I am so happy to see more people exposed to the Legend of Vox Machina and cannot ait for your season 2 reactions. while I used to comment facts and tid bits about the game relating to the show on reactors channels I stopped as to not be annoying and spam literally dozens of reactors ith the same post, but if you have any questions about the show (Spoiler free of course) Feel free to ask me and I will answer to the best of my ability. For Example: - Vaxildan And Vexahlia's Players Liam O'Brien and Laura Bailey may not be twins in real life they do share the same birthday and is where they got ideal to play twins. -A matter of fact it was a one shot game for Liam's birthday, hosted and DM'ed by Matt that started what was to become Critical Role. -Up until them both Liam and Sam Had little or no experience playing the game. -Also the first game they played Wasn't even D&D but another Role Playing Game, Pathfinder. -Before Taliesin Jaffe picked up a plague mask and a pepper box pistol his first character to join Vox Machina Was a blue dragonborn cleric. As this character as only ever played in a few home games and only mentioned a few time in Critical Role show's the character has been made non cannon to most sources. In D&D most characters start With a backstory and a goal in mind. Unlike most cleaner narrative structures anything can happen due to the improvisation and dice rolls. While some things did change from stream cutting over a hundred and fifty hours of live play game down to just over five hours of content is insane! Are there things that ere cut for time I would love to see? Yeah! But that just encourages me as a fan to tell you ho are new to this. When you have the time listen to the streams of the original game. you can Watch them if you have the time (Heck some people even react to them) but at the very least listen to them so you can catch so many more amazing events ith this crazy group. Welcome to the Critter community Y'all!

The gun being thrown into the acid was quite different in the campaign and included Scanlan casting a spell on Percy in order to even get his hands on it and Percy attempting to reach into the acid afterwards to grab it again. It was a hilarious part, though I honestly can completely understand Percy's anger at it being thrown in. In D&D it costs a lot to build a gun from scratch, as Percy did, and he had enchanted two of the barrels, something that costs anywhere from 1500 gold pieces to 5000 gold, and Percy never got a gun that had the same or even any enchantments again. IRL, Taliesin (Percy) was actually pretty frustrated with Sam (Scanlan) for a while afterwards for that whenever the List was brought up. Anyways, loved the reaction! Really excited to see your guys' reactions to all of Season 2! (Which IMO is much better)

You are mostly correct. You're slightly incorrect though his gun called Retort had psychic damage, IIRC... So he did absolutely eventually find a gun that did have another magical enchantment on it... but you're absolutely correct that he never had a gun that was as powerful as The List. And yeah, The List was extremely expensive. Taliesin was very mad at Sam for a significant amount of afterwards... Some people say he's still a bit upset about it to this day lmao... But they had Percy forgive Scanlan almost immediately in the show.
@Jae_Birde
@Jae_Birde 8 ай бұрын
@@AnxietyRat TYSM for the correction! When I wrote this comment, I'd only gotten to the late 50s or so of the campaign, and in a combination of misremembering, not being super familiar with Retort yet, and just forgetting to fact-check, I'd mixed that up. (And yet I spent about ten minutes checking and double-checking prices for both enchantments and building guns and still forgot to fact-check that part...) Thanks again for the correction, I really don't want to give away misinformation, so it's much appreciated! I've found Taliesin being upset for so long about the List being destroyed simultaneously hilarious and completely understandable, though it definitely makes sense for them to have Percy forgive Scanlan so quickly for the sake of streamlining the plot and skipping over needing to handle potential complications all of that could've caused, though it definitely could've been funny if Percy didn't forgive Scanlan quite so quickly and/or tried to rescue the gun as he did in the campaign. That said, it definitely makes a lot of sense for a more linear story like this one to not include that stuff and to trim the details a bit, so I don't mind.

At this point in the show they were recording remotely in their houses... And Taliesin said he probably scared his neighbors a couple of times with the things he had to yell as Percy in this episode. Interesting take on the structure of S1. Its important to note a couple of things. You already mentioned that it is going to go against what youre used to just because its improv and dice outcomes. But secondly, there's a built-in 4 act structure to both seasons, as its been designed to release 3 episodes ar a time. Its more apparent in the second season, but there are definitely 3 episode arcs, complete with cliffhangers and heart-wrenchers.

Some context from the campaign: Percy and Keyleth are best friends. So Percy being so cold towards her being severely injured and on the brink of death is EXTREMELY out of character for him. It would be like if Pike was severely wounded and Grog was like “She’s gone, we need to move on.” It’s a hint for us that Percy isn’t in his right mind at this point. It also explains part of how Keyleth is the one who noticed Percy was possessed. She does also probably know a lot about demons, but she also knows the most about PERCY. Their close friendship isn’t as clear in the show, because they had to unfortunately cut a lot of their bonding moments, so I wanted to bring a little context :)

The reason Orthax was driven from Percy when he shot is own hand is because he chose self-sacrifice, which is almost opposite of the revenge Orthax was fueled by, breaking the connection. So orthax returned to the Pepperbox as it was a physical manifestation of their bond. With Scanlan destroying it, Orthax no longer help power over Percy. They did not destroy Orthax, merely severed the connection. It will be back. In the campaign, the DM revealed that every time Percy got a kill with the Pepperbox, Orthax grew stronger.

I wondered why the spirit of Orthax in the the gun didn't latch on to Scanlan as a last resort for survival but then I realized that it had to be Percy that touched it cause he's the one who "forged the covenant" with the demon. Spoilers!!!! Orthax had no reason to latch onto Scanlan. If you don't want to be spoiled by DnD game information, stop now. Demons are a type of fiend and fiends can only be killed in their home dimensions (planes of existence). Orthax wasn't fighting for his life, just control over Percy. He was just pissed off that Percy was starting to fight against their contract. This wasn't even Orthax's real body, just an avatar manifested through the gun. Also, Scanlan/Sam had no idea if destroying the gun would do anything. The game version of events were not like the animated version that makes it clear the pact was forged with the gun. It really was a total guess.

@arandomnamegoeshere Жыл бұрын
Percy's gun was a lie. Percy believed he crafted it solely via his own vengeance-driven ingenuity. But he was shown the way to success (something that's eluded others - such as Ripley) by Orthax. And in that process, Orthax began to seize control over Percy. It was the unwritten contract - the twisting of Percy's anguish and hate to serve a demon. A contract that Percy never willfully entered but served none the less. The List was a lie. It presented a path to Percy's ultimate vengeance. It was the hit list Percy would execute to avenge his family. Except... the list was never static. We became aware of this list... one name per barrel. With one barrel unaccounted for; the implication being that it may be for Percy himself. We later see that new names could appear on The List. And Orthax would not allow Percy to take his own life. The List would easily adopt the names of not just those who murdered Percy's family but anyone who stood in the way of Orthax's plans. Percy himself once uttered "your soul is forfeit." And that's what the gun ultimately did. It was there not as an instrument of Percy's vengeance but to feed souls to Orthax. Maybe one day the gun would deliver a truly corrupted soul; Percy himself. But The List would grind for much longer before that day came. The gun was a lie. Orthax's defeat was a challenge - but one that could be overcome. The demon hungered for Delilah's corrupted soul. When it seemed like Percy would deny Orthax's desire, the demon exposed itself... attempting to seize control. But the demon had overplayed its hand. Percy resisted the demon's attempts to drive him to killing his friends. Orthax knew it had been defeated when Percy maimed himself rather than kill the one individual he had the most deep-seated desire to kill. Except... Orthax was not defeated. Orthax simply feigned defeat and retreated and would wait for the gun to continue doing what it had always done for Orthax and to Percy. Lie.

I mean kind of but also not really. In the campaign, Percy had two barrels of his gun that dealt magical fire and ice damage. So it technically was always a magical weapon regardless of if he was being possessed by Orthax or not. Some DMs, myself included, take contracts and oaths like this to me extreme levels of seriousness. Based on everything I’ve seen, Matt tends to as well. So the second that Percy chose to spare her, Orthax lost his full control over Percy which is why the single gunshot seemingly was enough to banish Orthax out. However as we saw when Scanlan yeeted the List into the acid that wasn’t the case. Once it was destroyed, the contract Percy made was gone, and I agree with your assumption that if Scanlan wouldn’t have thrown it in the acid this situation would’ve crept back up eventually. I wouldn’t put it past Matt to have planned that out honestly, I’d be more shocked if he didn’t. You guys have quickly become one of my favorite reaction channels on here, can’t wait for season two! It’s just be heck of a roller coaster!

Fairly sure Matt even confirmed that Orthax would've come back as a problem later, when Percy was in a weakened state of mind again, had Scanlan not destroyed the gun. Also, fun fact, while Percy forgave Scanlan pretty quickly for destroying his prized posession here, his player/VA Taliesin still (mostly jokingly) holds a grundge against Sam (Scanlan's player/VA) to this day. It had two separate enchantments on two of the barrels that let him do fire and ice damage respectively on shots made with those barrels. And lets just say enchantments are _expensive._ And time consuming, if you do it yourself (think months of 8 hours of work a day). And if you pay someone else to do it, it gets even more expensive.

Personally, I thought episode 11 was the best of the whole season, but I agree that how they handled Orthax was too quick and anti-climatic. In the campaign they all had to physically kill the demon, it wasn't just Percy shooting it

It was funny Sam (Scanlan) threw the gun into the acid in the real life game. It looked like Taliesin's (Percy) head was going to implode.

It's really interesting, in psychology, actively talking back to and resisting an alter ego or hallucination is a method taught in some schools of treatment to help a mentally ill person having hallucinations telling them to hurt others, etc. And they take a page out of the fight club movie where Tyler Durden shoots himself to assert dominance over his sociopathic alter ego.

Yes, we had to wait for a year to continue the story. >I was so into Percy being that badass, but now I'm like NO! Yeah. I loved how they showed this, in the beginning you're cheering for Percy, but later on realize that oh, hell no, this is bad, this thing should be stopped. Kiki likes Vax, but bad timing is the real enemy of their affection. (And her anxiety about her responsibilities, she fears she won't be able to balance love and duties) In dnd lore, many things from other planes of existence (demons included, if i am not mistaken) simply go to their native plane if they die while being in our material world, and can be truly killed only there. If writers will use this fact, we may see Orthax's return.

No Keyleth did not blush because she's in love with Vex. She blushed because she an anxious, socially awkward bean and we all love her. Moving on. In the campaign, Scanlan really did throw Percy's gun into acid, he even charmed him to get him to hand the gun over. Taliesin, who plays Percy, was so angry over it, even after the reveal Orthrax was bound to it. In the game the gun had a few enchanted barrels to deal magical damage, and it was REALLY expensive. He NEVER fully recovered from losing it, and I think he still holds a grudge against Sam (Scanlan) to this day.

Marisha actually has said that Keyleth did have a crush on Vex and Vax at the same time... So you're correct that she wasn't in love with Vex but she absolutely had a crush on her at this point and that's why she blushed when Vex gave her praise. There's even a joke/conversation that happened that she would join in on Vex & Percy's relationship and Taliesin was like "yeah, that could probably happen, for sure, but it would be Vex instigating everything". Lol.

You could almost consider the Briarwoods-stuff as almost a prequel to the main storyline, which might be why it feels a little inconclusive*. This first season has been more of an introduction to the world and characters, while the second season is able to hit the ground running with more back story and character growth, as well as even more excitement and badassery.

The scene with orthax just comes down to condensing a really long story into 12 episodes. Season 2 for instance is just half of The Chroma Conclave arc and season 3 will be the second half because it was soooo long and even then 24 episodes still probably isn’t enough to truly do it full justice.
