On Thorns I Lay is a legendary band. They have more than 30 years of career under their belt. They are part the first wave of pionneers of atmospheric doom-death and gothic-doom in the 90s. They are not new to the avenue. They do not need to be related to any younger band you know, like some tend to do in comment sections. They do not need either to be ranked in one of your generic stereotypes about greek metal bands.They have their own musical identity and they did create their own universe long before any doom-death band they are compared with existed. OTIL has its own sound, it's wide, creative and versatile. Here their use of an orchestra of traditional instruments like duduk or saz along with classical orchestra both blended to their doom-death sound, is another example of what sets them appart and makes it something both unique and coherent with their musical universe. Let's drop the pointless comparisons and enjoy the ride for itself.

@@fotisx1975 Sorry, I don't speak greek at all, I'm not greek, but I'm a long standing fan for more than two decades (Holy Label, was particularly active promoting the band in the early days in Europe). Ok, let me guess, there are several Fotis surrounding OTIL, but you must be the one, Fotis the drummer, aren't you. If that's so, man, it's not like you were some unknown forgotten guy talking, Man, you're part of the legend (not just a little, you were part of many significant acts of OTIL's history). Thanks for the honour of your comment. How cool. I'll hope you're going to carry on the legacy too with Phlebotomy. From the fan's perspective, it's double benefit to have two bands carrying the torch.

I was listening to On Thorns I Lay around Crystal Tears years. Then I forgot about it for a while in the rush of life. When I came back, I found it much better. This is a very authentic piece with some oriental motifs. I liked it very much. With love and respect from your neighbour Türkiye.

Agreed/ If only metalheads were as openminded as you...The band would be more known. I can tell you many people are unable to understand their entire discography let alone embrace it . The stylistic versality and musicianship of theses guys go far beyond the realm of extreme metal. But yeah, that diversity and versality is often incomprehensible for some. All they want is to hear clones of Orama and Beautiful sounds of experience. Since they fail to get it they reject the rest . Which is a shame. Because their wide stylistic horizon is a strength for the band not a lack of coherence. That track captures and synthetizes many various stylistic facets the band is about including death, doom, black, atmospheric, gothic, symphonic and folkloric. That's what OTIL has always been about switching from one to the other over the years.

To me it does not matter so much to read things through the national lens, even if it is always flattering for greek national ego. OTIL is more than just a greek band, it is a metal band with an international stature that explores powerful universal human emotions that everyone can relate with not just greeks. It's not a problem to state one's love for the greek scene. But when we essentialize them like that, we tend to restrict bands to a local bubble and it sounds like a stereotype (although a positive one). "Norvegian metal is like this", "german metal is like this","greek metal is like this". Music is music. It uses a language that transcends local particularities. I'm not greek, but their music has always spoken to my heart deeply.
