A simple introduction for students that shows how the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation is responsible for our seasons. This video makes up part of the Shedding Light on the Sun and Earth series, which covers all the basics of climate science: seasons, winds, weather, hurricanes, and how land masses and oceans affect local and global climate patterns. Each video comes with an activity sheet. The activity sheets include map reading, weather charts, graphing and more.
The full series is available on ClickView, Learn360, Classroom Video on Demand, and Safari Montage.
Go to our website at www.liacoseduc... for more details and to download the worksheet.

In my mind i was always that spring is green, autumn is red, summer is yellow and winter is white or blue. This is due to the causes that make these color appear in just seasons.

This is great! I especially like your demo in the gymnasium and the way you've positioned the camera to represent the vantage point of the sun. Then, your description of how the same beam of light striking north vs. south of the equator during a solstice results in two different intensities is quite elegant.

When the sun is low in the sky, each unit of area gets less energy because the same amount is distributed over a larger area, like this: Height Energy per m² 90° (zenith) 100.0 % 80° 98.5 % 70° 94.0 % 60° 86.6 % 50° 76.6 % 40° 64.3 % 30° 50.0 % 20° 34.2 % 10° 17.4 % 0° 0.0 % (if the Sun was a point source of light)

Question so if the earth didnt have inclination, we wouldnt have seasons? or in certain months the earth would be a bit away from the sun so would have some colder/warmer months ?
@LiacosEM
@LiacosEM Ай бұрын
The Earth's orbit is not quite circular. It gets as close as 147 million km and as far as 152 million km from the sun. There would definitely be a small variation in average global temperatures as the Earth gets closer or further from the sun, but nowhere near the variation caused by the tilt.

My doubt is that if the earth is a perfect sphere, there is no possibility for it to be tilted. Everyone says it's tilted, so I understand that the earth rotates on a tilt because it's not a perfect sphere. My question is whether my understanding is correct.

The Earth is at the angle of 23.4° to the orbital plane. I find it interesting, though it's probably not significant, that that is close to half of 45°. Which is half of 90°. Which is half of 180°. Which is half of 360°. Which is a full circle.

@@marcyc1695I am in Australia but in 2017 i have traveled to NYC, yes in Australia is winter in July and summer in NYC. I also believe the seasons start on the equinoxes and Solstices. I enjoyed the video! I have one question though. You mentioned the sun hitting the one hemisphere more directly, causing summer in that hemisphere, and in the other hemisphere the sunlight is more spread out, thus less energy, thus cooler. I had never heard or picked up on that before. I always assumed that it was because the one hemisphere was a little bit closer to the heat of the sun for that part of the year, and the other a little bit farther away. Does this also affect the temperature? Thanks! I love orbital demonstrations.
@LiacosEM
@LiacosEM Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tyler. The earth has a diameter of about 13,000 km but it is about 150,000,000 km from the sun. The difference in distance from the sun for the two hemispheres at any given moment is basically zero. Also, the orbit of the Earth is not circular but slightly elliptical. As it orbits the sun, the closest that it gets is 147 million km and the furthest it gets is about 152 million km. And yet, both hemispheres experience summer and winter on cue!!

It is very sad that still 2024 there are no live camera for whole earth from space!! another scientific query I have is: earth is tilted to left(from viewer's point,)means opposite to this video which shows right sides bent. why I think left bent tilt? because Vancouver vs Halifax, NS! if it was tilted right then Halifax would have those "mild tropical forest" red woods etc. rather Vancouver has it!! see? tilt earth left and see how well vancouver/ west side of north america faces more sun!!!. if anyone knows then explain😂. coz I am debating where to move, east end or west end of Canada😂

According to Kepler's theory - the distance of the earth to the sun is not the same during winter and summer. Why are you in a perfect circle? How could the sun be farther away during aphelion and be summer time? And be closer to the sun during perihelion -and be winter? Not to mention the sun's size remain the same in the sky? Heliocentrism doesn't make any sense, at all. Our globe is stationary. The sun moves!
