Even for experienced bridge builders, floating bridges without foundations or bridge piers are extremely rare. For over 50 years, the longest floating bridge in the world has connected downtown Seattle with the northern communities on the other side of Lake Washington, which is connected to the Pacific Ocean via a series of canals. Until now, the old bridge has bravely withstood severe storms, the waves, and the last major earthquake in 2001. But it has become dilapidated, and the impact on it from the steadily increasing volume of heavy-duty traffic and the enormous loads involved is clear to see in many places.
The new floating bridge directly alongside the Governor Albert D. Rosellini Bridge, commissioned by the state of Washington, has been under construction since October 2011. The new bridge is not only meant to be higher and substantially wider, with six lanes and cycle and pedestrian paths, but more importantly, it will also be safer. It is to be a prestige project that pushes bridge construction to the limits of what is technically feasible.
Since long floating bridges are only built on very rare occasions around the world, a partner with a wealth of experience and expertise was required on the reinsurance side, one who would understand the risks attached to such an ambitious project and be in a position to provide the relevant reinsurance cover. The experts from Munich Re Engineering, many of them engineers with extensive engineering experience on construction sites for major global projects, stepped up to the challenge and developed a reinsurance solution tailored to meeting the complex risks of the different manufacturing areas.
In the video our engineering experts Robert Gschwandner and Peter Hangen (both senior underwriter for the facultative underwriting of construction risks for our global clients) present the challenges and insurance solutions involved.

We drove across this [older version] bridge several times and it was scary between 2000-03. Those strong waves slamming on one side and calm on the other side was a sight to beholden. Glad they upgraded. Much needed!

Water pressure power conveyor to help bridge crossing less fuel and faster. For example the conveyor each about a mile then connect them to help drivers cross even pacific and had submersible ability in case large wave or high wind we pull over roof and sink portion of the freeway down about 300 ft is enough to keep is stable and float again after the storm
