I dropped what I was doing during work to watch this storm. Manager wasn't too pleased, not that I cared. Best storm I've ever seen in the Seattle area.

Used to be like that way back when up there. My grandfather lived in Bellview and we would visit and the rain storms were like that. Beautiful and terrifying as well.

Had a great view in Ballard! Definitely the best Seattle thunderstorm in my lifetime (52 years!). Wish I'd taken some video, too. The forks were spectacular. Usually we get mostly sheet lightning here.

hopefully yeah, still remember the sky looked pretty unusual to the SE before it rolled in.

So rare for Washington State to get thunderstorms like that! I always pictured it to be mostly wet, but not much in the way of convection to get storms flaring up! Just wow!

Must be nice to get actual rain with lightning. Down here in California you can't enjoy the once-annual thunderstorm without worrying about which city is gonna burn down.

I remember this storm vividly. It was the storm that I recorded my favorite lightning strike on my phone. I can't wait for another similar event.

Wow that is a lot of lightning for the pacific northwest! I live in Vancouver and we get a couple of decent ones every spring and summer as well. Too bad they're so rare out here
@briane1732 жыл бұрын
I live in Vancouver also but a decent thunderstorm is indeed rare here. The one that sticks in my mind still is the one in 2012 where a lightning strike took out a 100-ft tall spruce just outside of Officers Row at Fort Vancouver. Just _exploded_ that tree and sent splinters of wood 100 yards in all directions. My house was about 6 miles from there and that strike shook my house from that distance. (!)

@@briane173 toothpicks! The big beautiful trees always seem to take it on the chin during a thunderstorm. I think we all could use more rain within reason.
@briane1732 жыл бұрын
@@4bibimimi Did you catch the news story of the tree that got hit by lightning in Canby a few days ago? _Massive_ tree and it was just obliterated. Trees that are _wet_ are prime targets for lightning and the damage is exacerbated by the water in and on them. 50,000 volts vaporizes those dozens of gallons of water in an instant, and it's that sudden expansion from superheating that creates the explosion. Since we ourselves are 60% water that's reason enough to stay inside during a thunderstorm.

That's right where I was! In Mukilteo, Paine Feild QFC.. See my comment...it was nuts in that area. Very unnatural, almost creepy! A bolt surrounded my car, I swear!

Sounds like a severe thunderstorm. The sirens should have gone off.

The one at 3:50 is what I went through in Mukilteo parking lot at QFC for over half an hour! One bolt, while in my car, I swear, hit the area surrounding me! It hit and lightning and thunder were together. The cracking was deafening! My body froze, took my breath away, my eyes literally bugged out, whole car was engulfed in the bright, white light and just blinded me; my head, fingers and toes tingled! I LOVE storms but this one scared me still. Oh, and my mouth tasted like metal for a few minutes. Anyone know what that's about? Wow. Just WOW😬
@kathydockins43044 жыл бұрын
You are lucky you were in your car. If you'd been standing next to it (or touching any metal surface while inside it) you may not have been around to post this comment!
@dannamorse32424 жыл бұрын
I had dropped my keys into the black hole in between my seat and console. I was upset at it at first as I wanted to get home. After that bolt hit and recovered from the shock of it all I was SUPER happy I dropped em and hadn't been walking into the store! I think this was very unnatural lightning. Just two weeks ago there were two stories of many being killed by lightning. I think the chum they're spraying is super-charging the atmosphere above. See Mike Morales on youtube, Sept 5th video. The cat's out of the bag!
@dannamorse32424 жыл бұрын
This was definately unnatural lightning!

Ok I was here for this thunderstorm, I NEVER heard that loud of a thunderstorm strike at 3:42!
@just_kos995 ай бұрын
What was unnatural about it? Cars get hit fairly regularly. As long as it's a hard-topped car, all the windows are closed and occupants aren't touching any metal people are perfectly safe in cars.@@dannamorse3242

Sadly we don't get anywhere near that much lightning in the Ottawa valley, but far more wind and rain, to the point of being sent home from work as a vehicle porter because just getting into the car in the rain we get would soak the interior...

Well that's exactly why these storms attract so much interest in the PNW -- storms like this just don't happen here, so when they do we're awestricken, even when we've experienced Midwest or Gulf storms in the past. We expect them there -- not here.

I ask because it's not the Seattle I remember from when I moved to Whidbey Island in the 80s. Downtown is a dystopian cesspool these days and I won't go anywhere near there now. My son and his fam, my dad and his wife, they life on the Kitsap Peninsula and that is as close to Seattle as I dare to go these days.
