First Nations managed forests on Vancouver and Nootka islands for thousands of years. As logging encroached on the last untouched salmon stream in their traditional territory, leaders of the Nuchatlaht Tribe launched a movement to heal and protect this land.

The western cordillera of the Pacific NorthWest or its biomass at least has been established is the direct/indirect result of the salmon runs. Geologist know that the parent minerals of this region, being largely basalt and granite, do not furnish much fertility to soils yet this region is one of the densest biomasses on earth. It is the annual salmon runs and the fertilising ability of the salmon though so many food chains over countless millenia that has established this biomass. As much as production forestry disturbs one balance within this ecosystem if the salmon runs are not able to be restored or they become over depleted the already depleting biomass will not be able to be restored. The salmon farms are doing enormous damage to these salmon. runs as they are the prime source of the sea lice that attach themselves to the baby salmon as they migrate past these farms on their way to the at sea stage of their development. Sea lice are not too much of a problem to adult salmon in the natural world , but in the numbers that encountered when near these farms they do damage the adults. The fingerlings are just done to death by them, hence the ever depleting salmon runs and ever increasing sea lice numbers. The whole upstream ecology is being destroyed.
