For those wondering where the name Shamu comes from - Shamu was a young Southern Resident and member of the J pod. Her mother was harpooned and killed in front of her. The traumatized young orca was sold to SeaWorld San Diego in 1965. She became the first superstar of SeaWorld. She died of a uterus infection in 1975. Only 5 out of 166 orcas taken into captivity in North America are still alive - Corky, Lolita, Ulises, Katina, and Kiska. Corky is the oldest orca in captivity. She is from the Northern Resident orca community. She was captured in 1969 in Pender Harbour, British Columbia. She is a member of the A5 pod, A23 matriline. Her mother, A23 Stripe, died in 2000, but she still has relatives in the wild - sister Ripple, brother Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot. Lolita was captured in 1970 in Puget Sound, Washington. She is from the L pod of the Southern Resident orca community. Her mother is L25 Ocean Sun (estimated to be 95 years old). Lolita lives in the smallest orca tank in the world. Ulises, Katina and Kiska were captured in Iceland. SeaWorld has eighteen orcas in its collection. Three were caught in the wild - Corky, Ulises and Katina. Fifteen were born in captivity. Lolita lives at the Miami Seaquarium and Kiska lives at Marineland Ontario. Orca captures were banned in North America in the mid-70s. Iceland banned captures in the 90s.

Anyone ever hear of Tilikum the killer whale? In the documentary Blackfish, it's admitted that as a training method, they'd deprive him of food, and punish him for not completing tricks for entertainment. They also paired him up with a very heavily trained whale, and whenever he didnt accomplish the same tricks the other whale did, they'd both get no food for the night. As a result, Tilikum was 'raked' by the other whale. In the morning, the trainers would see that Tilikum was covered in scars and cuts, and he was still performing. He was then on the breaking point. He worked at Sealand, in Canada. He killed a part time trainer, and this person was Keltie Byrne. They were a champion swimmer, as well. He also was at one point shipped to a SeaWorld. There was more reported incidents I'm forgetting, but a very special one happened at SeaWorld. A very professional, very trained, and very emotionally connected person to the whales was sitting with Tilikum, when Tilikum grabbed their ponytail and pulled them down into the tank, and eventually, the whale got their arm and they ended up dying. That was Dawn, the trainer. Basically, Stop capturing whales and hurting them for entertainment and cash. Edit: Also, it's literally been proven that killer whales are so smart that they have a part of their brains that process emotions and stuff, so SeaWorld and SeaLand abused the one animal that actually can process emotions like *anger.*

@@EpooNuttujib floppy dorsal fin means it's not swimming as much as it's evolutionary engineered. They swim hundreds of miles in a straight line in the wild, conditioning the muscle and keeping the dorsal fin erect. The dorsal fin has no bones or other biological structure. I'm fascinated by them and have learned about them for years.

Kalina's story breaks my heart. Not only was she separated from her mother, all four of her calves were taken from her. When her fourth calf, Skyla, was moved to another pool and lifted out by a stretcher, Kalina began to ram violently into the gate that separated them. She ended up with severe lacerations on her face. She never saw her daughter again and died within a few short years. They forced her to breed at only six years old. In the wild, orcas typically start calving between thirteen to fourteen years of age. Having a calf at eight years old is unheard of in whale society - at least in the wild. Kalina isn't the only orca to have been bred too young. Takara was torn from her mother, hauled across the country three times to different SeaWorld parks, treated like a breeding mare and separated from two of her calves. Kohana (Tilikum and Takara's daughter), Skyla (Tilikum and Kalina's daughter), Tekoa (Tilikum and Taima's son) and Keto (Kalina's son and the orca who killed Alexis Martinez) were torn away from their mothers at young ages and shipped off to Spain. Kohana rejected both of her calves, Skyla is dead, Keto has serious anger issues, Tekoa and Morgan are frequently harassed by the other orcas. Corky and Lolita have been in captivity for over half a century. Lolita is from the Puget Sound Southern Resident orca population, which was decimated by captures in the sixties and seventies. They are now listed as critically endangered. Her mother, Ocean Sun, is estimated to be between eighty and ninety years old. They will probably never be reunited. Corky is a Northern Resident and member of the A-23 pod. Her sister, brother, niece and grand-nephews can still be seen roaming the coastal waters of British Columbia. What different lives they must lead.

People tend to ride off these creatures over rare incidents that actually occured due to abusing it. But watching this, I can see why people love them so much. They look like social animal's that enjoy spending time with people, just from what I can see here. Watching 'Free Willy' growing up too, the thing is that even in the wild, these creatures have saved people many times & possess incredible intelligence. More money should be put into stopping the way they are trained in awful ways, understanding them & instead focus on making them comfortable & happy with better training techniques. The water too, I can't imagine that all the chemical's would be that healthy for them & think fresh sea water would be more ideal.

Once upon a time a famous zoo had a monkey that died, they looked and looked for a monkey to replace it but could not find one. So they hired a poor man off the street and gave him a real monkey skin to dress up in. They put him in a cage far enough from the zoo visitors so that they would not be able to tell that he really wasn't a real monkey. All day he would screech and jump and swing around doing monkey things. Then one day a terrifying thing happened! He swung too far on his rope swing and it tore and he landed in the lion's pen next to his!!! He began screaming for help. The lion got up and walked over to him and bent down as if he was going to bite the monkey man's neck, and whispered, shut up man, or we'll soon both be out of a job!!!!

When a baby orca is born it's instantly taken away from her mother. They feed them gelatin to keep them hydrated which contains specific stuff that are harmful for orcas and cause obesity. Which leads to depression agresivity and death. No wonder those idiots get killed when they put them in those bath tubs and do such things to them. Actually they DO NOT CHOOSE to be loyal. They PARK them HUNGRY in a covered shallow type of "carport" until showtime. Finally, IF they hit all their marks they get measly little portions of dead food. They're starving them to perform, seems natural that every once in awhile they will show they've had enough by attacking the trainer who denies them the food. It's cruel to force behavior by withholding food. Should've been doing preservation programs showing the world how important their natural habitat is to us all. The first time I took my family to Mexico we went to a 'Swim with the Dolphins", thought it would fun. Kids had fun, but for me it turned out to be one of the most depressing things I've seen. After all the whistleblowing that came out about Marine Land in Niagara Falls Ontario, I think all these places should be shut down. I know, some are rescue animals, but when anything becomes 'business' the quality usually goes down hill, including the care of animals.
@jaroslavcech2252 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean and I agree with you, but the comment about everything becoming bad after in turns into a business is just not true, I mean look at today's consumerism, money actually make things work and are the driving force, people tend to criticize this fact without realizing that this is precisely what our economy stands for - profit.
@gcruishank96632 жыл бұрын
@@jaroslavcech225 Yes that is true, all the things we have and enjoy are from taking natural resources and turning them into something else. However when we take animals and put them in captivity for our entertainment usually it’s to the animal’s detriment. Yes I know some are rescues but it’s what we don’t know is happening behind the scene that’s the problem, as the case with Marineland. Anyway, the trade offs for consumerism.

Imagine no music playing in the background or cheering, just solely orcas spending their whole lives in a tank doing tricks just for food. If you truly care about the animal don’t take anymore in(unless to rescue them until they are better) and give the ones left in the park that don’t know how to fend for themselves the best life possible.

Great more dumbasses! Well, these whales get vet treatment everyday,daily feeds and treats,practices,access to the show pool,toys, and even rubs and pats! And in the wild they dont get that at all instead they get hunted for there blubber and skin. Also there endangered so if they die out we got captivity orcas to hope on

Pöllerö the orca cry was being editing in there. And orcas are endangered for reasons i dont wanna say also orcas lifespan is quick but long! Most orcas live longer because of health reasons. They take calves away when they are old enough when they need their mom or the vets check the calves to see how healthy they are or if have any diseases. Its common logic in Sea world. Look up sea world backstage! You can see backstage of believe which was probably the golden years of seaworld!
