He really struggled at the end of that 1000m WR as he was on antibiotics for a throat infection. At the time journalists in Britain commented on how much easier Ovett looked at the same meet when he broke the Mile WR an hour later. For that hour after the 1k WR, Coe held the 800, 1000, 1500 & Mile world records simultaneously. That's never been done before or since and probably never will be again.

At 1:10, the commentator mentions the only other man who held 4 world records simultaneously. Can anyone spell his surname?

If this video taught me one thing it's not to go walking round the department store whilst in the thick of hard training

Yes, a lot of the current crop of middle distance elites do hill reps. Both Aouita & EL G took this element (along with several others) and incorporated it into their training. One of the points of hill running (sprinting) is that not only does it build muscle for explosive turn of speed, it also means that running on a flat will seem that much easier.

"Inspirational leaders need to have a winning mentality in order to inspire respect. It is hard to trust in the leadership of someone who is half-hearted about their purpose, or only sporadic in focus or enthusiasm." - Sebastian Coe

Peter and Sebastian Coe proved that anything is possible. Sure Seb had natural talent but attitude and work ethic rule the day. Peter had no background in athletics, but managed to coach a multiple world record holder with 2 golds and 2 silvers in the Olympics, who also happened to be his own son, because of attitude first and an analytical mind second.

"quality is much more important than quantity" that quote and the sentences said after that is what I wish my coach would understand and change.

Interesting on how the philosophy on part of Seb's coach (his Dad) was to not do an amount of big mileage as part of a build up..there again Seb was training to run the 800 & the 1500 not the 5 & 10 km events.....hmmmm...

6 x 800m in 1:50-1:55 with 90 secs rest between reps! I can't begin to imagine what that must feel like. I wonder how many 800 guys in the UK are doing a similar session today?

@blaharns You're right, except Kipketer in the late 90's. I still think Coe could have gone sub 1:41.0 if he'd not been ill in 82 & 83. I think the British took him for granted, considering that only now, 30 years later, are there 2 guys (Rudisha & Kaki) approaching his times on faster mondo tracks. Those 6 x 800 sessions were brutal. I've read elsewhere that athletes since Coe have tried replicating his training sessions, only to break down unable to sustain it for more than a few weeks.
