As someone who has fished, shot rabbits and pigeon, all to be eaten, I feel it does bring me into an extrordinary appreciation of Creation, life, and death, and the complex relationship between the bounty of this earth and our dependency on it. It is true as Mr Morello highlighted, that we should respect that life whether wild or farmed. The conveniences of the modern world and supply chain of cheap mass food production have divorced most people from the source of animal foods and made them squeamish and neurotic about it. We do need to go back and reclaim our authentic connections to the cycle of life and death and reverence and gratitude to our Creator for them.

Well said. I myself don't hunt, but I've always known and been friends with hunters, even whole families taking some part of it. They as well as farmers and pastoralists have a far greater understanding and knowledge of wildlife and their part in the life of this planet.

@veganandcatholic try to understand that few people choose your way. I myself have been vegetarian since 18 years old, 45 years without meat, but everybody around me is carnivorous. I realise that it is me, not others, who stands apart and meat eaters are not able to see beyond their love of the taste, and I don't care. At first I was flummoxed because for me, going from meat 3x day to total abandonment, taste was never a consideration, never a reason.

Perhaps @veganandcatholic needs to zoom out enough to hear what Sebastian is actually saying. In our fallen world life eats life and we all depend to some extent on this process. The view of animals having souls has never been Catholic teaching as far as I'm aware. Or am I mistaken?

This has been so encouraging. Gavin, I am of an age that in my Junior school we all sat on the floor in the Hall at 2pm on Tuesday afternoons and listened to the BBC and sang traditional songs. My grandfather was born in 1881, witnessed the opening of Tower Bridge in 1894, fought in WWI in the Dardanelles, Thessalonica, and Passchendaele, but wonderfully taught me so many songs from his childhood. I always feel blessed for these memories and have passed them on to my children whenever possible. I lived overseas for 30 years (South Africa and then New Zealand) but came back to England and feel it is a very special place and despite all that is going on right now I would not want to be anywhere else.

What an AWESOME conversation. I was drawn-in immediately by the topic of conservation and meaningfulness of hunting - and it turned into an even more enthralling journey of deciphering the status of Catholicism - which is essentially the status of humanity. I will listen again and to Sebastian's podcast. I turned on this show because I have followed Unscripted for a while and knew that the Catholic orthodoxy of the conversation would not disappoint. God Bless you all. Let us reclaim Christ's Command to bring the nations to Christ as the Catholic Church has understood since He spoke those Blessed words.

I recently found Clarissa and the Countryman on KZbin. It was the foxhunting episode. I think they were trying to educate us town and city people about the sort of social ecosystem the countryside has, or had. Someone in the comments said they were glad foxhunting had been banned, and a woman listed the brutal alternatives to them. Apparently the programme was cancelled after this episode aired.

Foxhunting is in a category apart from all true and natural hunting, like stalking, rabbiting, rough shooting and so on. This is why it has no consistency with aboriginal hunter gather ethics or practice and so has rightly been recognised for what it is; a protracted equestrian chase without any real regard for the quarry. As such it is an abomination that bears no resemblance to actual hunter gathering practices.

@tamarawinget, Hello. I also work in agriculture, (CCA agronomist) - now 36 yrs - and have been farming or worked on farms otherwise in my 61 yrs - in NE USA. The "dubious" practices have enriched the big ag/food/pharma companies, kept food "cheap", ruined it's nutritional & microbiological values, corrupted our food supply with chemicals & disordered genetics, polluted & sedimentized our waters, eroded topsoil of immeasurable value, degraded our rural communities, driven farmers to despair and suicide at the highest rates of any American line of work, destroyed countless families for generations, and disconnected 99% of Americans from any reality of where food comes from and what it takes to put it on the table. I am grateful to be involved with some Vermont Conservation Districts that are also wanting to reverse course of this deterioration and empower people to farm with personal and ecological integrity and financial viability, and to grow the local food shed as a community. I consider this to be so beautifully of the Catholic traditions of stewardship and subsidiarity - and blessed to help people understand soil health, conservation, and food/feed production of wholesome quality again.

A brilliant conversation. Two points 1. As a student in the early 1970s I was a member of the university Conservation Society and of the League against Cruel Sports but in my last year at university I stayed in an outbuilding of a house owned by a Catholic family who hunted foxes with the local hunt. They didn't try to convert me to hunting (or Catholicism, although I did convert a few years later) but it rapidly became clear to me that fox hunting was both a more humane way to control foxes and more environmentally friendly than the alternatives - poisoning or shooting. I lament the arrogance and ignorance of urban elites imposing their sentimental world views on the countryside. 2. I agree that there is something mystical about England - and possibly Wales, though I don't know it well - and I hope and pray that Sebastian is right about things stirring. What interests me is that I feel nothing similar in Scotland where I have lived most of my adult life. It may be just that as a non-native I'm not tuned in in the same way but I suspect it's more do with the Reformation in Scotland which was much more thorough than in England and the most iconoclastic in Europe. 1560 was a real Year Zero as the composer James Macmillan said in a lecture at the Edinburgh Festival back in the 1990s, which earned him the unending hostility of the Scottish cultural elite.

Regenerative farming by Allen Savory... highly recommend. There's also a well known study on reintroducing the wolf as the apex predator in Yellow Stone National Park - the results were astounding and worth reading, even for those of us that aren't hunters or farmers. On a personal note, my grandpa was a well known rifle shooter and he had an incredible respect for animal life and the country, yet he would go camping in the Gulf in northern Australia, and live off the land. This profound respect does not come from those that do not eat meat, from my personal experience.

I suggest you read Tending the Wild. The indigenous people of the Americas burned forest, planted meadows and food to attract wildlife and yes, hunted and fished as well as gathered. Wilderness areas without human management become problematic. Humans are truly the gardeners of the earth. St. Peter had a vision of the cloth with every kind of animal, God said "take and eat."

@@retribution999 There nothing magnificent about a mangy flea-bitten animal left to die because they can't keep up with the herd or starving herds of elephants and buffalo. Don't people today see the incongruity of the Woke virtue signalling crowd with their proud veganism, false compassion and accusational self congratulational preaching at meat eaters, at the same time proudly supporting state euthanasia of the elderly and sick, free abortion for the promiscuous of unwanted babies, while marching hypocritically for animal rights to life. The complete condemnation of 1800s market hunting is a bit of a modern luxury. The market for it was feeding a need for clothing for some if it. Yes, there were luxury markets that could be rightly called excesses. But certainly a fair bit of it was for clothing in a pre-industrialized world without many needs being fulfilled. If his family lacked clothing likely he would want a market he could afford to but it from, especially in a cold environment. There needs to be a little more balance here.
@jesuslovesaves2682

A large amount of this overhunting hunting came about as the result of new technology, the breech-loaded repeating rifles. The mass production of the Winchester rifle from 1873 played a large role in the killing off of the Buffalo in North America for example. Often, when human gain new technology they misuse it. You could argue that is the point of 1 Enoch.

Hunting and shooting , killing animals for FUN, for SPORT .. is wrong . All animals want to live . There is a connection between children killing animals and becoming a psychopath . In this day and age in most places there is no need to hunt and kill animals just for fun. This man can put forward big fancy justifications but I would seriously question why ANYONE would murder any animal just for the fun of it . The thrill of the kill . I had no idea so many catholics were into Hunting , murdering animals for fun… this is distressing to hear . Iv been so on fire for my recent conversion . I don’t think Jesus today would defend killing any creature for the fun of it… Thou shalt not kill . My catechism states …. People must treat animals with kindness as creatures of god etc… How can you murdered anyone kindly ? Yes I’m vegan for the last 44 years Iv managed to thrive without killing animals for fun or any reason . This whole discussion is very distressing . This man’s justifications are so elaborate . Why oh why are so many catholics into killing for fun? . Hunting , blood sports , that’s what it boils down to . I’m shocked saddened and upset to realise the connection between catholics and hunting . This will not stop me attending the TLM or learning Latin or loving god . This won’t stop me consecrating myself to our blessed mother . Welcome to the Church but listen more closely to the Gospels; Our Lord ate fish and in fact prepared fish for His disciples! And while attending the wedding feast at Cana, He probably enjoyed an array of roast meats. Would you seriously consider admonishing the Son of God- the Creator of all that we behold? The Naural Law upon which the Catholic Church rests, would make better arguments against veganism than you could ever make for it! Think again and accept the benefits of God's creation (ie., a balanced diet ) of which man is the pinnacle. Feel free to be a vegan, just stop thinking that in doing so it places you on some kind of moral high ground!

I would not dream of going to KFC and Mcdonald s is just as bad. I know what goes on behind the scenes. Pope JP 2 definitely said animals have got souls and so did the hunting priest who helped me join the Catholic church over 50 years ago. More and more Catholics are turning vegetarian and more and more vegetarians are turning vegan . I dont know one meat eater in my parish although their must be some. I knew a Catholic chemist he would be 72 now. and was vegan from the age of 2! When he was at London universty he used to cycle home every Friday about 100 miles to see his girlfriend and family. He was over 6 foot and veganism hadnt done him any harm. What goes on in KFC and McDonald's behind the scenes, the stories i have had put me right off and other big food giants. I don't wear furs or use wool, i use cotton and or acrylic, i use vegan cheese, maple syrup for sugar and vegan butter etc. Animals birds and sea life are our cousins znd how we know, in their own little way, that they do praise God? I am sure the cattle knew something was going on at the birth of Our Lord. Animals are not daft! Oh, i wont have milk either because the process is so cruel, and the cows really cry when their young are taken away for slaughter, and sheep etc. I would have organic milk, but that is not easily obtained, but i am quite happy with plant based. I zm sure St. Francis would have something to say about the misuse of animals. Most of the vegans i know are very healthy. With transplants in humans i approve where necessary of animal parts, because humans come before animals. Adam and Eve could talk before the fall of man to animals, so they are probably more intelligent than we thought. God created animals for our benefit but He didnt mean that we should disrespect them. Think of the feral children who have accidentally been in the wild and brought up by animals. The animals saved their lives really, although the grew up with major animal ways. I dont believe in animal circuses either. Our Lord showed kindness to everyone and animals. The feeding of the five thousand, it was probaby five loaves and two bunches of grapes. Fish would have gone off in not time at all in the heat. Before the fall of man, we were closer to angels. After the fall we became not much more above animals and so we should respect them not KFC goers and hunters do. I fo not like bull fights or cockerel fights. I hold st Francis as one of my role models, and he started the tradition of a crib.t at Christmas. There is a lot thst the big food giants don't tell, otherwise many more msy become vegetarian or vegan. It is strange as i have said before that i don't know one meat eater at the local RC church, though there must be some. We need humans animals snd plantlife and aldo sea life. All is a bslance of nature like a symphony being played by an orchestra. Oh, i forgot there is a large society of all the different angels, too.

What would become of all the lovely breeds of domestic farm animals? They cannot live in the wild. Are you OK with them going extinct? Vegan butter is just margarine i.e. seed oils i.e. crushed from seeds denied their purpose to grow in the earth. Anyway you look at it, unless you eat rocks or plastic or carrion, you are killing something to feed yourself. Cows and goats produce too much milk even if their babies are left with them. Chickens will lay eggs without a rooster. Sheep are not harmed by shearing their wool.If these animals no longer have a use or value to people, who will keep them and pay their food and vet care? They will die out and be lost forever.

@@catholicunscriptedcan humans just go about killing any species then? For fun ?for a thrill ? To make them feel good ? For any rubbish reason ? My catechism states animals must be treated with kindness as creatures of god ??? ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

Animals do not have souls, they are not created in the Imago Dei. The beasts of the field, and the fowl of the air, and the creatures of the sea have all been created for our use. Our use of them must be compassionate and it is surely the case that killing animals solely for sport and enjoyment is a heinous thing to do.

It is contrary to human dignity for animals to die or suffer needlessly ( catechism) This chap writes about hunting glorifies hunting and is a hunter . There is no need for it animals are all vulnerable and deserve our protection . # Dominion # cowspiracy #myoctupus teacher #gamechchanger # forksoverknives ❤❤❤❤❤

You misunderstand the Catechism when it speaks on these issues. Contrary to human dignity? What on earth do you mean?

I love this channel, and fear that we'll soon be having to pay to join it ...which would cancel me out as a pensioner of little means... 🫠 Blessing everyone and a very happy 2025. I imagine some courage could be called for in the unfolding year so.... Veni Sancté Spiritus 🤍🕊🤍
