In an odd twist, Chrysler’s first-generation Sebring Coupe and Convertible shared little more than a nameplate. Steve describes what made them so different under the skin.

When Chrysler designed these cars which included the Plymouth Breeze and Dodge Stratus, there was no room in the engine compartment for the battery. If you notice when Steve lifts the hood there is no battery visible. Chrysler engineers stuffed the battery down in front of the left front wheel. In order to change the battery you had to remove the wheel as well as the inner fender liner making a 15 minute job last at least an hour.

I bought my wife a nice used 2002 LXi convertible in 2003. She wanted a convertible and we needed one that could possibly haul four tallish adults if needed without calling an ambulance when it was time to get out. It also had to fit our budget. It had the much maligned 2.7 and about 20k miles. We had it for a few years and she loved it other than in the wintertime. Never had any issues with it the entire time. Put about 30K while we owned it. The key to most engine failures is don't go by the suggested service intervals. Change fluids and filters more often than recommended. We traded it for a Lincoln Town Car that she had for almost ten years. She still wishes she had that one back. Of note, one of the things I can remember was when we were checking all the lots for used ones. The black trim around the base of the convertible top fabrics were almost always beat up. Even when only a year old. Only made from thin aluminum, people really bang stuff or themselves getting in and out of the rear seat with the top down.

A Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan 300zx sports car convertible the definitely were not, and never pretended to be. I doubt they will be a long term collector car like the others, but these are special in there own right.

Add a few notes, please, Steve. The Cirrus/Sebring body styles were three different platforms. 1. The Cirrus sedan is the JA platform shared with the Dodge Stratus/Plymouth Breeze [cloud cars]. 2. The Sebring coupe is the FJ platform shared with the Dodge Avenger. This is the modified Eclipse platform. These were built in the DSM [Diamond Star Motors] plant in Normal Illinois. 3. The Sebring convt is the JX platform and is standalone. It is a modified JA and virtually no chassis parts interchange. The hood and deck lid are SMC [sheet molded compound] on the convertible.

Heritage Auto Sales (the dealer sticker on the back) is still in business at 718 West Main Street in Waterbury, CT. Correct, there was the "JA" platform and the "JX" platform and they were different and in the Chrysler parts systems as two different models. Yes, the coupes were built in Normal, IL at the Diamond Star facility which was a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Diamond Star Motors started in 1985 and technically ended in 2015, but Chrysler pulled out of the partnership in 1991, however all contracted/co-built Chrysler products with Mitsubishi influence through 1995 are considered "Diamond Star" vehicles. Yes, all of the convertibles were built in Toluca, Mexico for the first generation then production was moved to Sterling Heights, MI for the second generation. This plant opened in 1968 and still operates today. These weren't very reliable and their lack of quality showed. My coworker owns a 2002 and he had to make his own repair parts for the window regulator guide because OEM parts (new at least) are "unobtainum". NOS is nowhere to be found and it would be a junkyard search for a part just as potentially worn as what he had, so he fabricated his own solution.

One of my bosses a few years ago had one of these, and it was a sharp car. He bought it, brand new, in High School. It had the bright red, like cherry red paint job. Before it even left the dealer, he had put rims, and a sound system in it, along with leather seats, an exhaust system and had it tuned up. The car was a thing unto itself. According to him, when he rolled up in it, nobody knew what it was, and he had convinced everyone that it was a lowbuck ferrari. Kind of a stretch, but these are high school kids. Last I checked, he still had it. Hes done some stuff to it since he got it. The waterpump went out, he somehow bypassed it, and mounted an electric, in line water pump up on the radiator, which solved his problem. He also had a turbo put on it. The car makes decent power, but I wouldnt say it is a reliable car
@kmath502 жыл бұрын
I really like this year for the Sebring convertible. This was the style for 1996 - 2000. It was nicer than the Le Baron Convertible that it replaced. I believe that the 2.5 V6 was more reliable than the 3.0 that had been used in the Le Baron. For 2001, the 2.7 replaced the 2.5, and seemed to have several different problems. One of them being coolant leaking into the crankcase if the water pump was not changed at the recommend interval.

The Avenger was a snappy car. Al these "mid size" coupe cars Chrysler made were available with some pretty high strung(for the time) V6. They put out pretty decent power for their size. They also needed preventative maint, or more accurately, part replacement, in order not to grenade generally involving the cam system. People liked the cab forward. i think it also played well with aero, or at least they advertised it for such. But that whole line of cars was viewed as fresh and leading the industry in styling changes for a little while, especially the Intrepid and the Avenger. I was always fond of the LHS, but my childhood was, well let's just say in the 90's my family was not buying a car from the 90's.

For Mexican market only, there was a Sebring RT, built with the 1st gen 2.4l turbo charged engine, which then was later updated and used for the srt4 neon and pt cruiser gt. @@my1vice Indeed one of the advantages having all the manufacturing in Mexico, plus, in those years Chrysler of Mexico was pretty independent from HQ, and as a result, really cool cars were created under that era, such as the phantom 16v (2 door lebaron with the 2.2 16v turbo engine). There are awd drivetrains that would have been fine in the avenger/sebring coupes, as they are identical from the a-pillar forward to the eclipse/talon so a 4G63 with a custom rear driveshaft and swapped rear subframe would basically bolt in. A missed opportunity for daimlerchrysler at the time. I have seen the reverse - the 2.5l v6 fits nicely in the 2G Eclipse.

@todddenio3200 Жыл бұрын
Yes and if a parts store worker did not know how to look up parts for the convertible, theyd give you parts for a coupe or sedan and it would not be discovered until the car was disassembled so you would need a second car to go back with the new AND old bad part to make sure you got the right parts. I brought back the part that didnt fit once and the guy did the return and went back to restock that one and to get me the "CORRECT PART" and when he came back he tried to give me the same one I had just returned. I knew this because on the lid of the box was a single greasy thumb print thatgot on it when I opened the box. Luckily I had brought the old wheel bearing assembly with me so was able to prove to him they were different and made him find the right one. It took him about 20 minutes to get it right.

Speaking of dual exhaust... on the 57 Pontiac 347, the LH exhaust port is forward facing and if your car came equipped with factory duals, the manifold would include a cast iron "u" pipe to direct it on back. Evidently, that factory piece is becoming unobtainium for those who are performing restorations. Mine was a former tri-power and luckily the factory dual manifolds are intact. And about transverse V6 engines. Loved the additional power benefits. Hated changing those rear plugs.

How weird is that, I was looking at a 3rd Gen JS Sebring yesterday 2.7 V6 convertible. 2008 model so it was a nicely presented unit but sadly in automatic form and it drove quite nicely for a 9 grand car which I felt was over priced like everything else out there at the moment. Parts in AUs? My friends Rockauto and Fedex :-) I need to do some more research but it'll make a nice daily for now.

Surprised you didn't mention the crazy battery placement in the wheel well. Back in the day working for an auto parts store we would install batteries for customers, but not for the Sebring or it's cousins.

These were sold as Stratus cabriolets in Europe and could be optioned with 2.0 liter engine and manual transmission.

Compared to the Mustang convertible, you got a usable back seat a trunk.

Cab forward design, also means better aerodynamics at highway speeds (less drag) radio antenna placement in rear, you are correct. Chevrolet Corvettes always had the antenna in the rear, due to it's fiberglass body. Please reply. Dave...

And the manuals dodge gave us for those had the wrong wiring harness in it. My friend was the lucky one who figured that out after someone at the factory ran a screw through the fuel gage wire and when the tank got filled shorted things out.

Owned one identical to that for years, great little "fun" car. Sadly the rust gremlins claimed it. Now have a second gen style Sebring. Note the larger LH platform cars had the battery under the fender, also an underneath accessible deal.

I remember when these came out, all my friends parents had them. Mostly b/c they were in their mid 50's and newly divorced. Even back then it was kind of an ongoing joke.
