The abuse by his aunt is hinted during Charlie's breakdown a couple of times as well as when he kisses Sam, those scenes that were "trippy" or did not make sense were flashbacks of his aunt. I would recommend you read the book, it's full of beautiful quotes like the one you liked, it helped many of us to go through our own high school time. Such a comfort book/film for those of us who felt like 'wallflowers' during our elementary/high school days.

Re: the bullying in school I’ve heard people criticize the bullying in this film as unrealistic. But, while this came out in 2012 it’s set in the 90s and I can confirm that the depiction of school bullying in the 90s is SPOT ON. The guy who just grabs his book and rips the cover? That kind of crap 100% happened in the 90s. A teacher poking fun at a student and everyone collectively bullying him with that nickname? Believable. The casual bombing of the gay f slur over the tiniest infraction of something “uncool” that was “cool” three months ago. Literally happened to me on the regular. Junior High friends suddenly ghosting you because a new friend is friends with someone who bullies you. Absolutely.

A wallflower is someone who observes instead of actively participating in society, often shy, reserved or socially awkward. I would really recommend reading the book, I saw this film the first time when I was around 12 years old I think and I struggled with understanding the ending (English is not my first language and I didn’t have Norwegian subtitles so it was a bit of a language barrier, and I also think I wasn’t aware of the abuse Charlie suffered from his aunt because I didn’t know it was a thing, luckily I grew up without knowing that there are grownups that could do that to kids). After watching it again when I was older I understood it better, and when I found out it was a book I wanted to read it. I read it half a year ago, and I read it all in one sitting. I cried. I was a bit unsure if I would like it because of how the book was written, with it being presented as letters Charlie was sending this anonymous friend but I ended up liking it. You learn a lot more about the characters and we se more of the relationship between Charlie and his sister and the family dynamic in general . We also learn more about aunt Helen and how she grew up.

Found this movie awhile back flipping thru channels and love it. The line "we accept the love we think we deserve" is so simple yet so poignant. I have used that on people several times and they look at me like i discovered fire. When delivering this philosophy, one must stare out into the great nothingness and sigh, hinting at some long dormant pain still worming its way into your heart. Shed a tear if you can.

I think it shows there's a myriad of complex emotions from abused people especially being young and from an older familial person and trying to figure it out and why; whether it's confusion, hate, etc. feelings towards the person. Why he keeps switching his descriptions of his aunt. His favorite person and then saying she's insane, etc.
@ZiggyonMars

It captured it so perfectly. Abuse is so complex. I struggled a lot with that as I have never been able to hate the person that abused me, even though I wanted to and it made sense to hate them.

The aunt is all 'keep it a secret' and hands on things (but also that scene where clearly, she is playing around with his parts)? I mean, they couldn't make it cleaner other than a big "sexual abuse" sign with flashing red lights and a clown horn.

I remember watching this movie for the first time and loved it. Then I read the book and loved it even more, it's one of my favourite books of all time. The reason this movie is so well adapted is because the writer of the book, Stephen Chbosky, also directed the film. I think that's why both, the book and the movie, are so moving because it transmit everything as the writer wanted. It is his own vision perfectly adapted.

When I saw this movie the first time I immediately watched it a second time the same night. I noticed the director of the movie wrote the book it was based on and downloaded the book and read it in 2 days. I really like this movie.

Seb, if you haven’t already you NEED to watch Napoleon dynamite, it’s the wackiest comedy ever. I feel like you’d have a fun time with it

The guy who plays Brad Hayes also plays Needy's boyfriend in 'Jennifer's Body'.

We have quite a few guys that were "jocks" in our school that were a lot like the guy in this movie and actually, some that you would have thought were on the debate team or in the science club.

This is my favorite movie next to pretty woman.We are infinite is literally my email lol. The “we accept the love we think we deserve” literally is my favorite line in life. I identified as Sam because sexual abuse mixed with mental abuse from Charlie and Patrick makes me seem in this movie. Being SA at a young age from my cousin,bullying and suicide that I had to move three times in my school year and then being bisexual and in a Christian family. I see myself in all three of them and it hits so hard still as I am 27 now.

The movie takes place in the early 90’s so it was harder to find a song since the internet wasn’t big and Search engines weren’t around yet
