He was a super nice guy. I met him in Atlanta and we spent the day together at the hotel pool. I embarrassed myself by telling him he looked like John Denver but better looking! He started laughing and shook my hand. Long story short he said he’d leave me two tickets to his concert that night and we parted. My husband thought we would end up in nose bleed section but the guide kept moving us down and put us on the stage platform where the families were sitting! Someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Debbie. They were laughing about what I had said to John that day. John held up the concert that night because he heard there was a bad accident outside and wanted to give people a chance to get inside. Big heart. Loved the mountains. By the way, his voice was clear as a bell, no stress. More to the story but I know this is long. Sorry.

John Denver was an Air Force brat, so he did move around a lot growing up. He was exposed to many places and cultures in his formative years. His dad was a pilot, so, he learned to love the sky and everything under it. He had a basic respect and appreciation for what he found around him, even if it wasn't perfect. And he wasn't perfect either, but he sure was fully human and fully alive and a very fine poet and musician. He was a keen but kind observer. I saw him in concert. When the band took a break, he swung his acoustic guitar around himself and showed us what he was really made of. For a full 30-45 minutes, he was pure love and joy. He sang for the love of it.

The lyric He was born again in his 27th year does not mean born again in the religious sense. Coming home to a place he'd never been before. The Rocky Mountains, more specifically Aspen, Co. The entire song is about his love for the Rockies, where he was born again coming home to a place he'd never been before, leaving his old life behind him hanging by a song. The memorial park in Aspen is built by the town after he died is phenomenal.

John Denver became a conservationist after he moved to the mountains. He believed that water and land should not be polluted. As a teen I followed a lot of what he said about the beauty of the Earth. He is totally talking about the "high" of being in the mountains, not being stoned. To me, this is an important distinction because the song is from 1972, and many places in the country tried to ban it from radio play and television simply because of the term "high." JD was one of my favorites growing up, and he has the singular distinction of having written two hit songs that have become official songs of different states in the US: Rocky Mountain High in Colorado, and Take Me Home, Country Roads in West Virginia.

mmmm I feel like I read or saw a story somewhere from Annie herself, who confirmed that it (that particular verse) was about friends sitting around a campfire smoking weed. He was probably in general talking about being "high up" in the mountains, the "high" of the feelings of being surrounded by the nature experienced up there, but you can't totally dismiss the weed aspect of that particular verse.

For many years I also thought it meant he and his friends were stoned. But a while back, I read a quote from an interview of John where he mentioned these lyrics were always misunderstood to be drug-related, when in fact he meant them as being joyful: high on nature and its beauty. Knowing how important nature was to him, I believe him.

The album was released in the fall of 1972 and I was gifted it Christmas that year. I wore the album out. I saw him in concert at the end of that decade. Phenomenal! He has his own play list in my music. John Denver loved the Rocky Mountains and built his home in Aspen. He became an ecological ambassador. His music reflected his life, the world he observed, and his values. Although he was categorized as a country musician for a time, he wasn’t one. He started out as a folk musician singer/songwriter and remain connected to those roots. Today his singing would more aptly be categorized as Americana or Roots music.

This brings me back as I lived in Aspen when I was in 2nd grade. My mom got transferred for work to get the finances of a ranch out there under control that the owner of the company she worked for had just bought. It was the greatest year to be around a horses and skiing for a year as a 7 year old. The ranch wasn't that far from where John Denver lived and we would see him often at this one cafe we went too. Even got to see him play a few songs for a group of about 30 people. Thanks for reacting and bringing back those memories.

Thank you for reacting to Rocky Mountain High, John's magnum opus to his beloved Colorado. As you have seen this is a largely autobiographical song featuring references to John's own experiences in Colorado. John grew up a military brat, the son of an airforce pilot, and his childhood was one of regular moves from state to state, even once to Japan, enrolling in school after school, never sticking around for long enough or making friends and resulting in a sense of loneliness that was only brought to an end in his 27th year when he found Aspen, Colorado and the Rockies for the first time. He determimned that he would one day settle there and that he did after he achieved major success in music. Being a fan of John Denver since the early 1970s I was somewhat surprised by that famous reference in Dumb and Dumber. I wasn't at all offended and I believe neither was John. I see the quote as a real compliment to John, and not at all an insult. If you think about it it was the ultimate in joke. The film makers recognised that the public in general would get it, such was the fame of John, his links to Colorado and his beautiful song Rocky Mountain High. The line would never have been included if there had been any suspicion that people wouldn't get it! And man did they get it!

John Denver's music helped me get through some tough years in my teens after my dad died when I was 14 and my home life turned dark. I'd sit on the floor and listen to his music about being in the mountains, which transported me far away from the sad house I lived in during those years. Because of his music, it was on my bucket list to visit Colorado someday, and I finally did as an adult-once in the winter and once in the springtime. I went to his hometown in Aspen, took a ski lift to the top of Aspen Mountain, saw an eagle fly there, and visited the beautiful John Denver Sanctuary (a large park designed and dedicated to him after he passed), where I could envision him walking in quiet solitude by the stream and skipping on the stones. I wish I could have thanked him in person for helping me through my life with his music, but I said a little prayer and thanked him in spirit while I was visiting the place where he finally found his home.

There’s a lot more going on than you think at first. (Try to learn to it, you’ll see. 🙄) Find a later version, like the video from the Wildlife Concert and closely watch him play. He was an accomplished player but made it look effortless. While you’re in that concert, look for Flying For Me, and of course, Annie’s Song. Bring Ali… and tissues.

He wrote this song to honor the beauty that had so captivated him. He lived in Colorado until his untimely death in 1997.

In my favorite John Denver song, "Poems, Prayers and Promises", there is a recurring line that says, "...and lie there by the fire and watch the evenin' tire while all my friends and my old lady sit and pass the pipe around....".

John Denver's music got me thru some dark times when we were living in the LA area. I hated it there. We were burglarinzed several times, and an elderly neighbor was murdered during a robbery. My husband was serving overnight duty at the CG Air station at the time, as he did every 4 days. The birth of my youngest daughter and Denver's music got me thru it. An amazing talent, beautiful poet, albeit a troubled soul. One of the few concerts I have attended in my life. Gid rest his soul.

John Denver was my late mum's favourite singer, I grew up listening to him and was so lucky as a teenager to see him live in concert in Cardiff, UK not long before his death. I walked down the aisle to Annie's Song in memory of my mum and my husband's nan, who also loved him. In all honesty this is low on my playlist of his since the movie Final Destination came out, if you've seen it you know why, lol. My favourite John Denver song is Matthew, which is not one of the better known ones, Flying For Me (about the Challenger Disaster) and Calypso. I had on VHS John Denver: A Portrait. It's him talking about his songs and meanings and ideas behind them and I wore it out watching it over and over through the years.

Sitting here singing and crying my eyes out ! I was halfway through high school when this song came out and I played it to death. Beautiful thought provoking songs like this are not made any more which is a real pity. In the last part of the song, he sings about tearing the mountains down to bring in a couple more - which is so typical of progress - destroy all the natural beauty of the countryside to put up a resort. Lots of underlying meaningful statements in his songs. Thanks for a great review!

I think it's mainly "high=ecstatic", but the last chorus has a deliberate double meaning. John Denver was incredibly popular in the early 70s - so popular that there was an inevitable backlash. But his songs live on with stunning beauty. He was as well-known for his TV show as his voice, a variety show which showed off the goofy, country-hippie side of his personality and introduced the world to several new acts. He left us too soon - RIP John. "Annie's Song", "Calypso", and "Some Days are Diamonds" are three more classics of his.

John Denver recorded a sweet little song written by Dave Mallett, "The Garden Song". Others: " Calypso" and my late aunt's favorite, " Take Me Home, Country Roads ". That's just three. You really can't lose with John Denver.!❤

I don't know this for certain but I think John Denver sang a lot about places because his father was in the military and they moved around a lot. Also, he was constantly on the road as a musician. I love his voice. I was blessed to see him three times as a young man. My wife and I had Annie's Song played at our wedding 47 years ago this month.

Hi Mr and Mrs Sebs! About your little one and her tantrums: Have you tried ignoring her? Stay near her, stay calm, make sure she's safe, but ignore her and don't show any signs of stress. The first time my daughter threw a fit was in a grocery store. She reached for some marshmallows and I told her no, they weren't very healthy. She started flailing her arms and screaming! I took her out of the cart and gently put her on the floor and went about shopping and humming, not venturing very far from her. Other shoppers looked at me like I was crazy and I ignored them as well. She finally calmed down and wanted a hug. She never had a tantrum again. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you? If you have been feeding her tantrums with attention up to this point, it might take more than one tantrum and the tantrum may last a long time. Be patient, consistent and good luck! Love your channel and your passion!

Agreed, one hour, three hours, ten hours of tolerating a tantrum is better than a lifetime with a spoiled child. The first time my daughter threw a tantrum in the grocery store, I took her out the basket, told the cashier I had an abandoned cart on the candy isle and we left the store. That night we ate pb&j sandwich’s and her father told her pb&j was all we would eat until we learned how to behave in public. She never threw a fit again in public.

Grew up in Montana. Went into the Navy, and then lived in California for 12 years after being discharged. I would get soooooo homesick for the Rockies listening to this song. We moved to Colorado from California. I remember driving through the Rockies, listening to this song with an occasional tear because I finally felt like I was home. That line, born in the summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he's never been before. That was me at 37. Colorado was different from Montana, but the Rockies were still home. This song still hits me in the "feels".

John Denver always felt like an older hippie to me, and I think he perpetuated that image. Personally, I assumed he was high, but I have always thought this song was much more. This was a love song to a place he never knew existed but always wanted. He found that in the nature of the mountains. It was a defining moment in his life. Yes, were they physically 'high' around that campfire? Haha, of course. You must listen to Annie 's Song. It should be dedicated to your wife from You. Then ' Sunshine On My Shoulders '. You could also check out 'Calypso' Google this first to see what was the inspiration for this song.

Just a funny note about tantrums, I remember my daughter was about four and she threw a huge tantrum in a grocery store because she couldn't get something she wanted. I was told to leave them kicking and screaming on the floor and walk off ignoring her, and so I tried it. (Of course keeping track where she was!) When she noticed I wasn't paying attention to her, she stopped crying, got up, walked over to where I stood and threw herself down in front of the basket and gave another heartfelt performance! Sometimes you just need to laugh, so I know what you are going through!

The song is generally in praise of the wonders of nature, and Denver has said that he was inspired by seeing a Perseid meteor shower while camping with friends at Williams Lake in 1972. John is an all-time fav of so many, including me. I was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert in 1982ish, I wanna say. He sounded great. Not even 40 yrs old yet, and he was already making a difference in the world, becoming a sort of embassador for conservation and world hunger. We miss him dearly....

John speaks of this in an interview. They were in the Williams lake area in august of 1972 during the annual meteor shower. Normal stuff until, late in the evening, one came very low and went smoking across the sky. This all occurred during a phase where the moon was not visible. Later, needing to go relieve himself, John walked off into the trees, where he realized that it was actually slightly darker in the trees. As his eyes adjusted he began to see that there were faint shadows from nothing but the starlight! (Seen it myself many times). As to “Rocky Mountain high “, he addresses this also. It was a feeling he got hiking in the high country, when you got to some place that was absolutely magnificent, some place you had to work at to get there, to see this beautiful scenery, and it gave him a feeling almost like a high.

I just wanted to say, the two of you make a lovely couple and I bet your children are awesome looking! You can see shadows from nothing but starlight in the mountains and there is no better high than getting high in the rocky mountains! Great reaction! I would say that John's care about the land is what draws me to him! If you noticed in this song he stated that people were scarring the land.

The grammy recording engineer for John (and Steely Dan) had this to say about him: "John’s songs may have been three chord wonders, but he played the hell out of them. He was an excellent guitar player and singer. He performed thousands of sold out concerts over the years with just him and his guitar. He is the only guy I know who could do vocals on 30 songs in two days in the studio, all of them in one take."
