The female vocalists of the 60's & 70's are the best that ever stepped in front of a microphone. Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, Emmy Lou and Rita Coolidge were among the very best of the best. Check them all out. The album Trio featuring the harmonies of Ronstadt, Parton & Harris is a Grammy winning classic.

Imagine the confidence of this woman that during the 80s and 90s she let her LONG hair gray naturally instead of trying to pursue a look of "youth" and became a silver fox. She is comfortable in her voice AND her appearance! Look her up to see that. It was a radical decision by society's standards at the time! I know that you have listened to Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and now EmmyLou Harris. But you must hear how those three combined their voices in the late 80s to become "The Trio". They took their talents to another level by teaming up. They genuinely enjoy exploring music together AND each other's company. You will not regret listening to all three as The Trio!

She is considered the Queen of Country. Boulder to Birmingham" is a song written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff which first appeared on Harris's 1975 album Pieces of the Sky. It has served as something of a signature tune for the artist and recounts her feelings of grief in the years following the death of country rock star and mentor Gram Parsons. This song is a definitely worth a listen.

I saw Emmylou in March and she still sounds amazing! She doesn't need to sing loudly to create a beautiful sound! Townes Van Zandt wrote another song that Emmylou covered called "If I Needed You" and Emmylou duets with Don Williams on that song. A song that Emmylou wrote herself that's powerful is "Boulder to Birmingham" about Gram Parsons. There's also "C'est La Vie" and "Born to Run" and "Another Lonesome Morning." There is no bad Emmylou song!

My family and I saw Emmylou at an outdoor concert in Oregon a couple of decades ago. She and her Hot Band rocked it out for two and a half hours in the sizzling sun without slowing down. By the time she'd done her final encore, everybody in the family -- from 15 years old to 86 -- agreed it was the best concert we'd ever seen. She was an amazing entertainer. And every time I hear her voice, I think of the sad saga of Gram Parsons.

I heard my first Emmy song on my friend's car cassette player back in the early 1970's. He had just purchased her album Elite Hotel earlier in the day. The song was "Wheels" written by Gram Parsons (the so called father of country rock) and Chris Hillman (bass player of the Byrds). Note that Emmy was good friends with the great Linda Ronstadt. The two singers eventually cut 2 albums with Dolly Parton that were big sellers in the late 1980's. Thanks for reacting to Emmylou; she has done many more songs that you could react to.

Emmylou Harris is an example of what is best about music. She could sing the phone book, and it would be magic. Sebs, if you don't listen to her sing "Tulsa Queen" you will have missed a transcendent experience. Other great suggestions: "Two More Bottles of Wine", "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", "Boulder to Birmingham", "Red Dirt Girl", "Guitar Town", "Across the Great Divide"... the list is almost endless.

Do listen to "Love Hurts" with Gram Parsons and Emmylou. They had an amazing musical partnership. I can't think of the first time I heard her or the first song. She's been part of my sound environment since childhood. I bought an Emmylou Harris album at a garage sail that I have never seen listed on her discography. It was white with a blue picture of her. One song was "I'll be your baby tonight." well before her Quarter Moon album. There were a couple songs with boats in the lyrics. It was an amazing album and I lost it in a house fire in 1985 and have never been able to find it again. At the time of the fire, I had every one of her albums. Now I have them all but that one early album that seems to have been forgotten.

Please check out Emmylou Harris’s “Goodbye!!!!” Emmylou Harris has a soft spot forever in my heart, because she was one of my uncle’s favorite artists and because when I was growing up, my sister and I would always sing Emmylou songs together for our dad while he picked guitar. Emmylou Harris and Loretta Lynn were two artists my dad and grandparents loved to hear to us sing. I first saw her doing a duet with Bob Dylan of all people. He allowed her to do the instrumental part on her banjo and she blew me away. The media accused them of having an affair but they denied it. Emmylou does do solos but she prefers doing duets because she said that was the way she was raised. Everyone in her family played some instrument. Before records and even the radio, the people in the rural areas had to make their own music. With these old time artists there is no vanity as with the modern trash which is more glitz and glitter than substance. To entertain all you need is a good story to a song, accompaniment and a singer who feels every word. The song is their way of sharing a gift.

My first knowledge of Emmy Lou Harris was hearing her on backup vocals to Bob Dylan's Desire album from 1976. I'd recoomend "One more cup of coffee" She had her own thing before that too. She is said to not have been satisfied with the results but she sounds fantastic on those album tracks. You might also want to listen to her duet work with Mark Knopfler (that guy from Dire Straits) showing her later work and also like others have said below, in the two albums made with Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstat, Trio and Trio two. Anything from either of those will take you away.

Pancho and Lefty was written by the great songwriter Townes van Zandt. Like the characters in this song, Townes' life ended sadly. Emmy Lou is a prolific songstress.

Her Christmas album is my favorite Christmas album- A Light in the Stable- She also sang with Gram Parsons who was one of the pioneers in the fusion of country and rock- love her- this song was written by Townes Van Zandt- another rabbit hole

I first heard her singing backup on a song, and I stopped in my tracks and said, “Who IS that backup singer.” Emmy Lou Harris

Emmylou first recorded with Gram Parsons the person most people credit with starting country rock. He played with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He made 2 solo albums featuring Emmylou. My favorite song by them is a cover of "Love Hurts".

You must check out "Trio" (2015) which is composed of Emily Lou, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton. Especially: "After the Gold Rush" written by Neil Young. "High Sierra" is great also. Lots of gems on these two discs. Angelic harmonies.

Emmylou Harris. This is a deep rabbit hole. She is soooooooo talented. You should see her perform this song with Willie Nelson.

She joined Bonnie Raitt singing backup for Little Feat on “Dixie Chicken” on the Midnight Special concert series. Also like her cover of Chuck Berry’s “C’est La Vie” and her recent work with Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) “This Is Us” live

Emmylou is pure gold, but so is the songwriter Townes Van Zandt. This is one of his most famous songs. It's been covered by many great performers including Bob Dylan. Townes lived a painful and short life and produced many beautiful and moving songs. Check out If I Needed You by Emmlou and Don Williams or Loretta by Lyle Lovett.
