Imagine the confidence of this woman that during the 80s and 90s she let her LONG hair gray naturally instead of trying to pursue a look of "youth" and became a silver fox. She is comfortable in her voice AND her appearance! Look her up to see that. It was a radical decision by society's standards at the time! I know that you have listened to Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and now EmmyLou Harris. But you must hear how those three combined their voices in the late 80s to become "The Trio". They took their talents to another level by teaming up. They genuinely enjoy exploring music together AND each other's company. You will not regret listening to all three as The Trio!

She is considered the Queen of Country. Boulder to Birmingham" is a song written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff which first appeared on Harris's 1975 album Pieces of the Sky. It has served as something of a signature tune for the artist and recounts her feelings of grief in the years following the death of country rock star and mentor Gram Parsons. This song is a definitely worth a listen.

I heard my first Emmy song on my friend's car cassette player back in the early 1970's. He had just purchased her album Elite Hotel earlier in the day. The song was "Wheels" written by Gram Parsons (the so called father of country rock) and Chris Hillman (bass player of the Byrds). Note that Emmy was good friends with the great Linda Ronstadt. The two singers eventually cut 2 albums with Dolly Parton that were big sellers in the late 1980's. Thanks for reacting to Emmylou; she has done many more songs that you could react to.

Do listen to "Love Hurts" with Gram Parsons and Emmylou. They had an amazing musical partnership. I can't think of the first time I heard her or the first song. She's been part of my sound environment since childhood. I bought an Emmylou Harris album at a garage sail that I have never seen listed on her discography. It was white with a blue picture of her. One song was "I'll be your baby tonight." well before her Quarter Moon album. There were a couple songs with boats in the lyrics. It was an amazing album and I lost it in a house fire in 1985 and have never been able to find it again. At the time of the fire, I had every one of her albums. Now I have them all but that one early album that seems to have been forgotten.

I first saw her doing a duet with Bob Dylan of all people. He allowed her to do the instrumental part on her banjo and she blew me away. The media accused them of having an affair but they denied it. Emmylou does do solos but she prefers doing duets because she said that was the way she was raised. Everyone in her family played some instrument. Before records and even the radio, the people in the rural areas had to make their own music. With these old time artists there is no vanity as with the modern trash which is more glitz and glitter than substance. To entertain all you need is a good story to a song, accompaniment and a singer who feels every word. The song is their way of sharing a gift.

My first knowledge of Emmy Lou Harris was hearing her on backup vocals to Bob Dylan's Desire album from 1976. I'd recoomend "One more cup of coffee" She had her own thing before that too. She is said to not have been satisfied with the results but she sounds fantastic on those album tracks. You might also want to listen to her duet work with Mark Knopfler (that guy from Dire Straits) showing her later work and also like others have said below, in the two albums made with Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstat, Trio and Trio two. Anything from either of those will take you away.
