Fire! So cool of both of these artists being so down to work together and pay tribute to a fantastic song written by the one and only Tracy Chapman. Her humility stood out to us. Thank you for hanging out for Ali and I's reaction to Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performing Fast Car.

Why is this song so iconic? I'd say because it encompasses a lot that many can relate to. It starts out as being hopeful, looking for the American Dream of getting a better job, earning a better life, yet circles back around to the cycle of relationship with an alcoholic (first father, then partner.) It also is relatable for exactly what the chorus says, "And I had a feeling that I belonged; I had a feeling I could be someone." I think most of us have always wanted to feel like we fit in somewhere, and all want to believe we can make something of ourselves. This performance was a masterpiece IMHO. The obvious smiles on both Tracy and Luke's faces, the roar of the audience when they started the song, no big production, no massive spectacle, just two people from hugely different backgrounds performing an iconic song, and coming together through music. Maybe if we can all find some of the same kind of connection they found on stage with each other, and with the audience, there is hope for us.

There is a version of her singing this song in 1988 at Wimberly Stadium. Stevie Wonder was running late and Chapman, having performed on a much smaller stage earlier, was asked to go out and fill the gap while Wonder was in limbo. She just goes out to this huge crowd with her guitar and plays this song. You can hear her nerves at the beginning but something amazing happens and it’s just an awesome connection between the crowd and Chapman. It’s an amazing live performance and I’m not sure my description justifies it. Worth a watch!

Tracy was that new story teller we were surprised by in the eighties. A folk sound that was incredibly different but Bob Dylan sameness, Jonnie Mitchell softness, classic blues, a soulfulness that wasn't afraid to be brutally honest like many of the up and coming Rap artists who we're bringing their truth forward. Her music and that voice were so honest. My girl changed my thought process about the world in so many ways I can't express my thanks. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

It might be a simple song, but the beat and melody are extremely easy on the ears. It's a relaxing sound that takes you into the journey. As far as this performance, the mystery behind her total disengagement with the music family, created another mystery about whether she would make this appearance or not. She arrived at the ceremony just minutes before they took the stage. She also left immediately after the performance.

If you’re interested in watching an amazing (very young star-to-be) perform this song.. watch Tracy singing it in 1988 at Wembley. She had sung a different song earlier, but when Stevie Wonder’s equipment faltered and he was delayed, they asked her to come back on and perform one more song… she did Fast Car. She's there only to support her boyfriend. But she doesn't look for the spotlight. She doesn't post much stuff on social media, she hasn't been on a talk show for 2 years. This song is the story of the cycle many of us are stuck in. Birth, school, work, death. In a way, you have to be better than your situation to escape the cycle. Some of us make it out, some of us don't. The guitar in the song always reminded me of a ticking clock, counting the seconds as your life passes through your fingers and the frustration that you cannot get that time back. You do the best you can, hopefully, and with a little luck and a little money you might get out. Everyone has a story, a struggle, they deal with. We often look for a person who makes us feel loved and feel like anything is possible, but the reality is love and hope are not always enough to help you escape the cycle.

For me I hear in this song the determination of the singer to make life better for herself inspired by her partner, she achieves a modicum of success then her partner begins hanging in the bar drinking. The singer then determines the relationship needs to end because it's going to ruin what she has achieved however modest. "I ain't goin' nowhere" I hear as I'm staying put and continuing to work and try. I guess its because of the children. She's taking care of the children, not running off while her partner takes the fast car and heads out. That's what I hear. Like a lot of good lyrics its possible to read into it what resonates with the listener. The determination to keep trying and working on making a future however modest. I see that in a lot of people in poor circumstances. They grind on instead of giving up. Tracy Chapman is a great artist.

I’m glad I watched your whole review as you took a deep dive into the lyrics. As many singer/songwriters who get under your skin, Tracy Chapman brought this grittiness back. You can hear it in early Paul Simon songs and Harry Chapin to name a couple of them who tell complete stories in a few minutes of lyrics. Not every thing in life has a happy ending. That said, yes, she is a Grammy nominated and Grammy winning artist with a unique sound. The back story of how Luke Combs first heard this song is an interesting story unto itself and how his recording of it gave Tracy, a black queer woman, the 2023 CMA award for Song of the Year. The power of music and story telling is how we move together in humanity. Thank you.

One of the most brilliant songs about shattered dreams resonates universally. That’s why. The boyfriend becomes her Dad in his immaturity. She wakes up and ditches him. How about just having the lyrics in front of you during the performance? Many reactors really enrich their experience of a song by doing that.😊

They are showing Taylor so much because she is one of the only big celebrities that are so supportive, standing during every performance, dancing, having a great time. Taylor herself said in an interview years ago that she goes to award shows to support people, to have a good time and dance and that's why she enjoys them so much.

They probably showed Taylor for the Grammys performances because she’s usually one of the only ones standing up and enjoying/having fun. Also they only showed Taylor a total of 54 seconds at the Super Bowl. If you’re pissed about 54 secs out of over 4hrs then idk what to say man, cuz I honestly didn’t even realize they showed her for 54secs. As a Swiftie, I was so invested in the game I would completely forget she was even there cuz they barely showed her. Also, it’s always been a thing to show celebs at sports events and award shows and yes even during other people’s performances. It just so happens Taylor is the biggest star in the whole room. I mean they kept showing Meryl Streep during Joni Mitchell’s performance but I didn’t hear anyone complaining.

I love this song ever since I heard it years ago. I love the part about moving out of the shelter and living in the suburbs it makes me tear up all the time. Well I have a home but not exactly what my wife was wanting as it is a family owned home. It's small but but it's ours. We never lived in a shelter but we did live in an assisted type living for a few years. But she has always wanted something larger in a home. I want to give her what she wants but it is hard and inner emotionally hard for me because I want to give her all she wants and I will never stop trying and doing for my wife and daughter. I love them with all my heart.

This song resonates with everyone because almost all of us know the feeling of being imprisoned in a life we did not want, in less than ideal circumstances, with money issues, family issues, job issues. Almost all of us know the pain of having no happiness in life. We all know the feeling of wanting to get away and start over. Good writing makes good songs. There's nothing to be surprised about that.

Back in the 80s, she took part in a true world tour for Amnesty International. There were 5 acts -- Youssou n'Dour, Tracy, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Bruce Springsteen. The other 4 acts had full bands, big production, sometimes the mingling of musicians from each band. Tracy came out with her acoustic guitar. The final show, from Buenos Airies, was broadcast and the Argentine crowd went nuts for her, chanting "Tra-CEE, Tra-CEE". Awesome.

You can see he hangs back a bit more when they sing together. I’m quite sure that was intentional on his part to not overpower Tracy’s voice. The tremendous love/respect he has for her comes through in that entire performance and shows what a class act he is.

Tracy has said that this song wasn’t about her life. She was raised by A single mom. Smart as heck and was going to college to be a vet, sang around town for extra money. Someone heard her and liked her voice. Recorded Fast Car over the next months it sold a bit but wasn’t really taking off. Long story short, Nelson Mandela was celebrating his birthday in London…huge concert. Someone called her guy and said they need someone that could play in short notice however may not get the opportunity to play. She went and did get called to play. Then Stevie Wonder was to play and something was forgotten. He would not play so they brought her out again and she played Fast Car. Overnight success

The song resonated in the 80s because reganomics among other financial issues really were hitting blue collar towns but especially POC in so many parts of the US. The story Tracy was telling the world was resonating with so many young people who were going through the same thing. So many teenagers were stepping up to work and help their single parents get out of their ruts and get better lives. People heard this song and were like omg this is me.

Since I don't watch award shows anymore, this was the first time I saw this performance. This song has been on My Favorite playlist forever. I used to tear up listening to this song - its very touching. To me, it speaks of the pushes and pulls we all have. She has a chance to get out of town and move on, but chooses to stay and care for her loved one. Simple pleasures and simple dreams - not even big dreams. She and her beau grow up, stay together and are disillusioned with each other. Resonates with mostly everyone. 🤣

Luke Combs said he loved this song since he was 4 years old. Chapman is a folk/blues singer. Her style is storytelling. The tune also has that gorgeous guitar riff that is iconic. It is a tragic song. Poorly educated, nominally employed. At the last, she connected with a partner who had similar issues as her father. She re-lived what her mother did a generation earlier.

Iconic. This song has lasted for decades and this was a highlight of the night. I understand complaining that it panned to Taylor. But, she is always the only one standing & singing. If you notice, she knows all the words to all the songs. All genres, all songs. Respect. But I get it, but at least she is supporting artists & not just sitting there checking their email in their phone. But she was appreciating the legend of Tracy & this song. What’s great performance.

The always pan to her because she is the biggest name and was the only one showing respect by standing and celebrating for the entire song to celebrate the artist. She did that for every performer to show her support and respect. Sebs your TS flip out makes me put you in the column with the older white Republican males that keep spreading hate about her.

I think this song resonates because of the principle of "where ever you go, there you are". So many folks try to escape their circumstances only to find themselves back in the same situation. It is a song of perpetual hope, and cyclical failure.

When Luke released it, some people complained about him 'staying in his lane', but Tracy came out publicly, saying she loved his cover & was thrilled that he was introducing the song to a new generation. I love that they put this performance together. And when talking about Taylor, in this case they were showing her singing along with every word. As for the NFL nonsense, I'm not sure about the Superbowl game, but a news guy admitted on a show I watched that the MOST Taylor was show in the 9 previous games, was a total of 30 something seconds when added together. All 8 of the other games were under 30 seconds if you added up every quick pan to her. She is what the fans want. They show the coaches & sidelines stuff much more than actual football. The time in between plays is used to show the 'other' action AKA Taylor & kiss cams. LOL

The reason this song was so popular (besides Tracy Chapman being a total QUEEN of voice and lyric) is that it tells the poverty cycle. When it came out a lot of us were stuck in it -- saw our sisters stuck in it, lived it.

The power of love will protect you as you walk through fire, folks. There's a line in this song.. in which she is describing her poor drunken fool of a father.. his body, and that he's too young to be so old.. he got nothing to give, bankrupt, absolutely. Barely hanging on, he's only got the bottle to guide him and his daughter takes the love she was born with, and uses it. Now, that line has always taken my breath away.. even back in the day, it made people stop and be quiet.. because nobody 'in their right mind' would do that.. sacrifice their future to spend their time taking care of a drunk or high loved one.. WHO DOES THAT? NOBODY! Not even parents, these days, does that for their children! Ya's kick em to the curb! Throw them under a bus, toss them into gutters, you forget their existence, publicly deny them association, assassinate their character, you murder their options. Tracy didn't do that, did she. That is love.. from within. that is what it looks like when you access the love within yourselves. You begin behaving better.. and with kindness towards those you currently HATE. Tracy appears as humble to us, yet she's just motivated by love, not fear which shows up in our personality as humility. It is unusual to see in a human being, these days, although that is how we ALL used to be, before civilization, capitalism and empire building destroyed us. Wouldn't it be lovely to see, this society CHANGE it's emotional intelligence? To actually include others besides the self? To assign to others.. the same fkn rights you assign to yourself. this society as a rule does not love. We got the homeless out here, in winter time, put there by society. then we got first responders who will go in a steal all the homeless' belongings.. because you're not powerful people unless you're exercising that power over and above others, right? they don't have any options, what you think that is? But a death sentence? Society does that. Nobody else. Hm?

I think this song resonates largely because of Tracy Chapmans authenticity. What's funny is when I first heard Luke Combs I really liked him even though I dont like a lot of modern country. Then I find out he loves Tracy Chapman and it all comes full circle! Just two authentic singers being intimate with an audience. That always works.
