He was a nice man also. A friend, who is fantastic on the keyboards, was playing in a hotel lobby. As he was playing, out of the corner of his eye he saw an entourage stop and listen. One of them began walking towards him and when he turned to look, it was Pavarotti. He handed him two tickets to the evening's performance and the use of a limo to travel to the event. It was an unforgettable evening for both him and his son. They were treated like royalty, even though no one knew who they were.

This is from Puccini's Opera. It's the story of a princess who refuses to be married. To discourage men pursuing her she states that anyone wanting her must answer 3 riddles, but anyone that tries and fails is beheaded. She kills many many men until Pavarotti's character comes along. He's loved her for very long and he successfully answers the riddles anonymously. She's absolutely furious and announces that no one is allowed to sleep that night until he is found and brought to her so that she could kill him. This song is him somewhat mocking her "Nesun Dorma" = "none shall sleep" and announcing that he will win. The last two lines that were very powerful actually mean "I will win". Gorgeous opera and breathtaking song.

Actually, "Nessun dorma" I think it should be best translated in "none dares to sleep" or "none sleeps" .....I don't know which is the rightest.

Assuming that most people probably don't speak or understand Italian .. you have no idea or clue as to what the song is actually even about but we love it anyway because it simply sounds incredible and it almost takes you somewhere else. And therein lies the beauty of music for me at least.

When Pavarotti was born, God breathed on him. There's no simply no other explanation for a voice like that. Yes, there are other tenors such as Mario Lanza and many others that I like. But no one brings the emotion to the music quite the way he does. And he makes it look so easy. He almost never looks like he's straining at all. Love this video and could watch it all day.

Nessun Dorma is from the Puccini opera, Turandot. Whenever I hear Pavarotti perform this, I hold my breath and tear up. With all respect, no one else can sing this song like he did. Here are the lyrics in Italian and English: Italian: Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! vincerò, vincerò! English: Nobody shall sleep!... Nobody shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know... No!...No!... On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!... (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

I was lucky enough to see Pavarotti many many times at NYC's Metropolitan Opera House and this video was later in his career, he was the most amazing singer I have ever seen, he had a clear , strong, beautiful voice and his Belcanto technique was flawless and he made it appear effortless but as a classically trained singer I assure you that it is very hard work but the training teaches you to make it look like it is easy . Thank God that so many of his performances were recorded, there will never be any like Pavarotti.

Pavarotti's first experience of singing outside his home area of Medena, Italy was when he was 19 and sang with a choir from his home town at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales. It was in June 1955. As a 6-yr old, this concert was my first time at a big musical event, and our children's choir sang just after the Modena choir. Obviously, back then I didn't know I was sharing a stage with a future singing icon. Pavarotti returned to Llangollen 40 yrs later for the 50th Anniversary Eisteddfod. I wasn't able to be there, but my oldest son and my daughter went. What a treat.

Growing up in an Italian family, Pavarotti was played often in my grandparent's home.Even as a child, I remember loving his voice. It stood out to me, and I could feel the emotion behind the music, though I did not understand the words (often Italian or Latin). My uncle said he was going to take me to see him, because he was going to be playing in NY. Well, my uncle tried to get tickets, but they sold out too quickly, and the price for scalped tickets was ridiculous. Sadly, I never got to see him live. It must have been amazing.

I've seen his performances of this aria from his youth where he held that last note far longer. But I think that was when he was still showing off. By this point in his career he understands that it's not about him, it's about serving the purpose of the opera. Also, in his youth his tone was more nasal, here it's round and full. This performance was Pavarotti experienced and at the height of his powers.

To know that somewhere in cosmic time and space, the most beautiful voice singing their perfect song...perfectly. It doesn't happen lightly and it doesn't go unnoticed. Maybe you do not like opera...but you know this is the very best this song will ever be sung. So I have heard the most beautiful, perfectly tuned human voice singing Nessun Dorma. I had the opportunity to see him perform once. I do not remember what his first song was. He was much older and maybe not as perfect. I do remember how the first note he sang felt. It blasted across the coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi and engulfed the entire space..the air, the people, the hallways..it covered everything. One of my top 10 life memories to date.

Pavarotti played this role in the opera "Turandot" many times, where players have to sing and act. In this concert, at the end of this song where he sings "I will win, I will win, I will win", his facial expressions reflect that role, he is acting. There are many operas on KZbin, some with English subtitles so you know what its about. Start with light, comical operas like The Barber of Seville (Rossini) and The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart). Other fan favorites are Carmen, LaTraviata and Madame Butterfly. They will make you cry.

And of puccini operas - no one sange nessum dorma (and Sooo many have recorded it) as well as him. My personal fav is his Olympic performance. It was the turino olympics- right next to his hkme town. The crowd sang the choir part - after all their italian so they know it - and he knew this would be the last performance. He was dying of pancreatic cancer. It was so meaningful and special. Theyll never be another like him! I loved his Pavarotti and friend specials because they showed he wasnt a diva - he lived mysic and no matter what kind of music you did .... if you did it well ...he reveled in your mysic just as much as he did his own!

this is one of the best performances of Nessun Dorma, although there are other renditions by Pavarotti that show that he did vary in his performance a bit. Done not so flawlessly but with so much emotion is one video that might still be out there on youtube of a young Italian tenor singing Nessun Dorma from his balcony during the first and horrible covid lockdown in Italy. Gives me chills, still, because the climax of "vincere" took a completey different meaning then.

I love that you reacted to this, but so many reactors listen to just this song, and then NOTHING ELSE. If I could make a reaction suggestion, look up his rendition of ‘O sole mio. There are multiple versions of Pavarotti singing o sole mio, but the version I would recommend, just to pick one, is the duet version with Bryan Adams. I love how happy Pavarotti seems in this version, though he also seems to really be enjoying himself immensely in the three tenors version as well.

One of the all time greats. An obvious statement but still.

Some might argue there were a very few who were Pavarotti's equal, but no one has ever been better.

Nessun Dorma is from the Puccini opera Turandot. The basic plot is; there is a princess who must marry an unnamed suitor by dawn, unless she can guess his name, then the suitor will be put to death. But The Suitor knows that he will emerge victorious! Check out Pavorati in I Pagliacci, performing Vesti La Giubba.

hi, I'm Italian, you need to know the story that this work tells to fully appreciate it, and the deeper meaning that the story teaches, the legend tells of a princess Turandot, daughter of the Chinese emperor, and of a prince who is put before of the riddles, if he solves these riddles he will be able to marry her otherwise he will die, in the song he expresses the hope that he will win the test and be able to kiss her and have her as his wife, the deepest meaning is that in general even when something seems impossible to achieve one must never lose seeing his courage and determination, in the end he shouts that he will win at dawn

I used to sing but lost the ability from lung disease. I appreciate many singers but opera stirs your soul! You hear the magnificent talent these people are blessed with who have honed their instruments!!!

He makes it look effortless, but it is anything but. It is a lifetime of incredibly hard work and discipline and a staggering amount of talent. That is opera. When done well, it is simply unbeatable.

Pavarotti is perfection. Zubin Mehta, the conductor you pointed out, is just as renowned in his field.
