It should also be noted that Glen Campbell DID NOT read music. One of the best studio musicians ever and he learned a Rossini opera by ear. I just can't believe it.

Glen was a member of The Wrecking Crew, a group of session musicians based in Los Angeles who played on many studio recordings in the 1960s and 1970s, including hundreds of top 40 hits. The musicians were not publicly recognized at the time. They are now considered one of the most successful and prolific session recording units in history and became the most requested session musicians in Los Angeles

Glen’s family sharecropped for my grandfather! Not always proud of that, but my dad’s family played on the front porch every Sunday and the Campbells always joined in! Little did anyone in the family ever dream of him making it big! So proud of that little boy from Arkansas!

For me to play that on a 6 string when I was younger, would be amazing. For me to play that on a 12 string would be impossible. Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were two of the most amazing guitar players. I can imagine Roy, Glen, and Chet Atkins keeping heaven dancing.

This piece is the overture (beginning) of the opera William Tell composed by Gioachino Rossini which premiered in 1829. It is easily one of the best known pieces of music in the world. This video was recorded in 1975 in London with Glen and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. You might want to check out Fil's (Wings of Pegasus) reaction to this piece. He has a more technical reaction to the video.

playing a 12 string single neck is hard enough - yet - Glen goes for a casual stroll on the stage, stepping over cords/cables and moving around sound equipment. just like a walk in the park! then, he has to show what he can do: play it over his head, just as fast, keeping up with the orchestra strings (which is what the composition was actually made for) and not missing a beat! and to think that he was self-taught?!?!! amazing talent and with a golden voice too.

The William Tell Overture has been my favorite piece of music since before I could walk or talk, and this is the fastest I've ever heard it done. His personal life aside, Glen Campbell was absolutely awesome. I used to play guitar -- 6 string. I don't know how anyone can finger a 12 string cleanly, but Glen (and a couple others) have certainly mastered the art.

Except that William Tell is completely fictitious. A Swiss writer set out to write the definitive biography of William Tell and found that there was no mention of him until around 150 years after he supposedly lived. He dug more and found the shooting the apple story in IIRC Denmark roughly 400 years before William Tell was supposed to have done it.

When Glen did his farewell tour, after being diagnosed with Altzheimer, people wondered how he could remember how to play guitar or bagpipes, but guitar mostly, his specialist said it like this ... Glen has been playing from such an early age and has such a talent that it's as if he's breathing. He doesn't think about it, ... it just happens. There is a documentary about it all that maybe you should watch, if you like. It' so nicel6 done. He recorded his last song, and it is such an emotional one that it breaks my heart, called I'm not going to miss you.

I had a vinyl album back in the early 70’s, made in 1964, titled “The Astounding 12-String Guitar of Glen Campbell”. A dozen songs and on just one he sings a few words; the rest are entirely instrumental. Awesome! I let a friend borrow it and when I asked for it back he said he’d loaned it out and the guy lost it. Friend no more! If you can ever get a copy it just shows how he could play any song with the precision a 12-string requires.

@justwondering5651
@justwondering5651 3 күн бұрын
The actual name of this music is the "March of the Swiss Soldiers" finale from Rossini's William Tell overture. Glen dedicated this song to Clayton Moore and Jay Silverhills at the beginning of this clip. Clayton (obviously) played The Lone Ranger, the sole survivor of a group of Rangers massacred by bad guys. He wore a mask to conceal his identity. Jay Silverhills played his faithful Indian companion Tonto, who always called him “ke-mo sah-bee” which supposedly “faithful friend” in the language of his tribe. Jay's actual name was Harold J. Smith, he was an indigenous Mohawk-Seneca Canadian. You might say they stood for Truth, Justice, and the American Way to a generation of kids, mostly boys, until Superman came along. As you mention, The Lone Ranger was a weekly TV show It was the first Western made for television. It ran from 1949 to 1957, and then traveled to Rerun City, you can still find it if you look.

SEBS: I was employed by a major casino in the '70s when Glen Cambel was the featured entertainer in Harrah's Tahoe's main showroom (where Sinatra, Sammy, Tom Jones, & Bill Cosby performed that summer). His drug & alcohol abuse/behavior on the casino floor & blackjack games after his shows were shockingly terrible. Also, my father, a gifted professional musician for 60 years, assured me that the William Tell Overture (the theme song for the TV series The Lone Ranger) & the arrangement of it that Glenn plays in this performance was considered by professional musicians to be for relative beginner guitar players. Dad found it surprising that Glenn Cambell lowered himself to perform it.

As a long time musician myself, over 60 years, I suspect he played it because it is an audience favorite. As musicians, we play primarily to entertain and bring joy to our audiences not to boost our egos. As a euphonium player in several concert bands, (I have also played guitar for over 60 years) there are several songs that we play every concert season, and some every concert because the audiences go nuts for them. Not only was Glenn one of the best guitar players of the 20th century, he was a consummate entertainer.

That video was part of a concert Glen performed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra that was broadcast on public television (PBS) for one of their “pledge drives”. The video of the whole concert is also available on KZbin if you search for it. By the way, the Western movie you were referring to is probably True Grit; the 1970 movie that gave John Wayne his Best Actor Oscar and had Glen playing his sidekick co-star and performer of the theme song that also won the Best Song Oscar; which was the only Country Western song to win the Best Song Oscar to date.

Sebs my friend, as it has been pointed out, Glen Campbell was a Wrecking Crew musician. There are two different documentaries available here on youtube, one is called The Wrecking Crew, which is a phenomenally interesting look at the history and Legacy of The Wrecking Crew musicians. Unfortunately this one you have to "buy or rent". Now the West had the wrecking crew, but the South had Muscle Shoals. That is the second documentary that you should watch, which dig deep into the history, the legacy, and the influence of the Muscle Shoals recording studio. That one is free with ads. Each of these runs about 2 hours, and they are absolutely mesmerizing with the anecdotal history of 60s rock music.

My favorite Western movie? Top of my personal list is Quincy Down Under starring Tom Selleck. (It probably doesn't qualify because it is set in Australia, not the western USA, but I don't care.) But there are a bunch of movies starring John Wayne (Rio Bravo, McLintock, True Grit (Glenn Campbell is in it and sings the theme song) ) and Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josey Wells, Pale Rider) that rank right up there too. Then there's Blazing Saddles which is technically a Western but is in a category of its own as a Mel Brooks comedy, and Back to the Future Part III.
