Second Arrest: Man In His 60s Arrested After Iconic Hadrian's Wall Tree 'Deliberately Felled'
A man in his 60's is now the second person to be arrested in connection with the 'deliberate felling' of an iconic sycamore tree. It follows the arrest of a 16 year old boy on Thursday, who was earlier released on bail pending further investigation.
The Sycamore Gap Tree had stood for nearly 300 years next to the Roman landmark Hadrian's Wall.
Thousands of visitors each year walk along Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that guarded the Roman Empire's northwestern frontier.
Many have paused to admire and photograph the tree at Sycamore Gap, a beloved icon of the landscape that was made famous when it appeared in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film “Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.”
Footage from the scene on Thursday showed that the tree was cut down near the base of its trunk, with the rest of it lying on its side.
Northumbria Police said the teen was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage. He was in police custody and assisting officers with their inquiries, the force said.
“The tree is a world-renowned landmark and the vandalism has caused understandable shock and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” police said in a statement.
"It's an emblem of the northeast of England, it's an emblem of Hadrian's Wall," Andrew Poad of the National Trust told British broadcaster Sky News. "We've all lost something here."
The Northumberland National Park authority asked the public not to visit the felled tree, which was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016.

Earlier on this year, I took my partner there for her birthday as it was always her wish to see it. She didn’t realise where we were going until she gazed down on the tree and suddenly realised what all the effort was for. Her sudden realisation and subsequent smile was supposed to become a wonderful memory. Instead, it’s been replaced by a sadness and anger at such a blatant disregard for nature and beauty.

Agreed. I heard about dairy cows being pumped full of drugs just to keep it plumbed in long enough to supply humans with milk. Then after giving birth to a beautiful calf in such horrendous conditions and circumstances, the calf was taken away from its mother, causing a huge amount of suffering before the the calf was then slaughtered because it was male. This is also a crime against nature.

No 16 yr olds cut this down. I've employed and felled trees for 20 years and now a major employer in Arb. Look at the cut. Its by someone who's been trained and mentored, it has a gob, hinge and backcut. For a 16 yr old that cut was rather bloody good. They would get a job. I'm doubtful a 16yr old held a 18inch + bar and saw.

This isn’t just cutting down a tree. It’s an act of crime against nature. It’s defiling beauty and disrespecting the sacred bond between nature and mankind. We are nature, yet we destroy it because we’ve forgotten. I hope we all wake up and remember. Reminds me of Avatar… how crazy is it people cried at avatar yet it’s happening right here in front of our eyes, and we’re numb, and wonder why mental health issues are so high. It’s because we’ve become robots, lost. It’s time we open our eyes and reconnect to see the sacredness in all things, the trees and lands, for our souls sake. Every day I go into nature and stand under my favourite trees, letting them heal me, listening to their wisdom, in awe of their beauty. If I walked up to find they were cut down, I would be devastated. Trees aren’t objects you can just discard of, they are alive and taking a 300 year old life you must be so depressed and disconnected, I hope you find peace. This makes me want to go plant trees, anyone else?

@@hazelpearson7807 That's a good question Hazel. When I posted this comment only the 16yr old had been arrested, and from my experience the younger generation is much more environmentally aware than the older one these days, and that is a cause for hope. I suppose I should have used the looser term " society" instead of the more specific " generation " as a single generation can span as little as 16yrs. What we're really talking about is just individuals, of which each one displays whether they have the values and qualities that make them worthwhile members of both our society or their generation. I was so angered by this event that I didn't stop to ponder every word I wrote about it, however there is hope that the tree might regrow, and with any luck, this event might encourage people to value trees more in general and even to plant new ones if they are able.

why have you inserted abuse into a news story about a fckin tree? how does it go from 'young person angers people by cutting down historic tree' to 'you all dont care about abuse'? its the sort of subject i prefer to keep out of my mind, but i bet youre one of these people who's lives revolve around it. you gotta stop constantly thinking about child abuse you creep, same goes for the rest of you or are you hiding something and this is why youre so fckin vocal all the time?

What's the problem there's millions of trees cut down in rain forest every year .and no ones bothered. Now one tree is cut down their moaning about . The rain forest are a millions times more important. There's more wild life there than any where on earth . They not do anything to stop it until its to late.

As the vandalism occurred at Hadrian's Wall, I suggest that the culprit is given a truly Roman punishment...

It'll grow back in another 300 years... There's more important things in the world to be worried about. The police don't even attend burglaries anymore. There's no way a teenager did this.
