My great grandfather fought at Guam in 44 as a Radio operator directing artillery from the ships to the beach. During the assault his radio was damaged, he took shrapnel in the legs, and watched his comrades fall around him. Either through the works of adrenaline or god (probably both) he managed to fix his radio and continue relaying enemy positions to our ships while helping extract wounded men to safety…I hope to grow into a such a courages man one day as well. My uncle, Captain Harry B. Barker, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, Company L, was killed leading his company in securing the high ground on Asan Point just to the right of Blue Beach on July 21. He was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously.

The battle of Guam was a brutal battle. It showcased the ferocious Japanese resistance in the war and now they would defend each island in the Pacific Ocean. The Americans forces would be in for a brutal slug throughout the course of the war. From Guam, Peleliu, Papua New Guinea, Bougnville, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Burma, Borneo, and much more. The Japanese would by now in 1944, was on the defensive, would make sure the Allies pay in blood. The war in the pacific was one of brutality on both sides. Godspeed to those who perished in the pacific war. And to those who perished in the battle of Guam. 🇬🇺 🇯🇵 🇺🇸

At the time of the Japanese invasion in 1941 the native people of Guam were not American citizens but nationals. There is a clear legal distinction between a citizen and a national. I just want to make this clear. The US was an extremely racist segregated society

My father was a veteran of world war II U.s. Navy South Pacific. He was stationed aboard the USS Montpelier which was a Heavy Cruiser. They were involved in the shelling of both Guam and Saipan. They went on from there to Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Okinawa was the battle that scared the shit out of my dad because of all the kamikazes. My dad was in the thick of it for almost the entire war and from what my mom says he brought the war back with him. My dad didn't drink but he was severely abusive to me as a young child. I didn't understand then but both my parents have been gone since 1997 and I certainly understand what he was going through now that we know about PTSD to the extent we do. There's not a day goes by that I don't miss my parents. On a good note the last 20 years or so of my father's life we were thick as thieves and good friends. But I have to say I never really lost my fear of him. Rest in peace mom and dad!🙏🥰⚓️🇺🇸🎯❤ I should also point out that this account is my wife's. I was my father's only son and I have an older sister.❤

My dad was in the first provisional brigade on Guam, they were really the 22nd Marines, before and after Guam. My dad said the fighting on the Orote peninsula was the worst of the war for him. He fought the whole battle with Filariasis, nothing would heal, he said, open sores on his body. Anyways, they liberated the Marine barracks on the Orote peninsula, the first U.S. soil liberated during WWII. He died in 1997, very proud of all these guys, God Bless.

The Americans were smart to add the U.S. Army 27th Division. As combat operations would later turn out, every singe American division, Marine and Army, were critically needed. Perhaps even an extra division would have been handy. The Japanese defended Guam with tooth and nail.

I am by no means even a minor expert but it seems to me that Army Rangers climbing the cliffs would have been useful here. And maybe even paratroops or gliders landing on the runways and the flat area around the airfield may have been an idea. The US Marines seemed fixed on standard beach landings.

The 305th is an Army not Marine regiment. Why not mention that? Just saying the "305th of the 77th" pretty much says nothing to those not aware the 77th is an Army division. "Infantry" is not consigned to Army, the correct distinction isn't infantry & Marines but 'soldiers' & Marines. British narrators seem especially guilty of these errors. This is 2nd doc narrated by a brit I've seen this week where no mention of Army vs USMC is made during operations. 🤦🏻‍♂🤷🏻‍♂
